***THE RUNAWAY BESTSELLER, WITH NEW MATERIAL FOR THE PAPERBACK***

THE REVEALING, DEFINING ACCOUNT OF THE DARK NETWORK THAT BROKE OUR COUNTRY.

Something has gone really wrong in Britain.

Our economy has tanked, our freedoms are shrinking, and social divisions are growing. Our politicians seem most interested in their own careers, and much of the media only make things worse. We are living in a country almost unrecognisable from the one that existed a decade ago. But whose fault is it really? Who broke Britain and how did they do it?

Bold and incisive as ever, James O'Brien reveals the shady network of influence that has created a broken Britain of strikes, shortages and scandals. He maps the web connecting dark think tanks to Downing Street, the journalists involved in selling it to the public and the media bosses pushing their own agendas. Over ten chapters, each focusing on a particular person complicit in the downfall, James O'Brien reveals how a select few have conspired - sometimes by incompetence, sometimes by design - to bring Britain to its knees.

About the Author
James O'Brien is an award-winning writer and broadcaster whose journalism has appeared everywhere from the TLS to the Daily Mirror. His daily current affairs programme on LBC is the most popular talk show on commercial radio with over 1.4 million weekly listeners and his first book, How To Be Right, was a Sunday Times bestseller, which won the Parliamentary Book Award for Best Political Book by a non-politician. He is often to be found on Twitter trying not to get into arguments unless absolutely necessary.

The sequel should be interesting once labour have really broke Britain

Funnily enough I don't remember that happening last time they were in. I just remember Brexit, lowest economic growth in history, rising national debt and the highest taxes on record from the last 15 years of Conservative mismanagement.

How did who break Britain? The EU? The immigrants? The unions? The politicians? The general public? COVID? There's lots of factors at play here, so anyone who thinks it can be blamed on just one group; or that one group can save us really hasn't thought much about it.

I'm not voting labour: I remember them coming to power the year after I started driving, and gleefully anouncing their fuel-tax escalator to 'encourage' public transport usage, as well as a range of other tax rises across the board to increase public spending, though I don't recall seeing any benefits of that. Oh, and laws, lots of new laws, though some would have been mandated by the EU.

I'm also not likely to vote conservative: they may have been doing okay before Brexit (or at least I don't remember anything particular that was screwing me over back then), but since the referendum they seem to be more interested in who should be PM this week than actually running and improving the country in a way meaningful to the general public. Certainly the public don't feel they're listening, as evidenced in the recent elections. (edited)

Funny how you can so easily wave away the notion of voting Labour , but you’re “not likely” to vote Tory. This country has never been so bad, it’s like a Shakespeare play on a daily basis with the lying cheating and corruption, but vote Labour …never!!! The party that fund the NHS that looked out for the working man not the posh boys , the party that if you needed a dentist appointment it was never an issue , that brought in minimum wage to stop exploitation…I could go on, but we Never had it so good (and don’t try to use the World banking crisis) , but yeah you keep voting for the posh boys that give all your taxes to their billionaire mates , coz you don’t want to admit you got it wrong the last time you voted Tory

Problem with this book is that it's a partial review of his ideological beliefs. It's not a wholesome objective look at what happened. He was part of the breaking of Britain.

For good reason why would he want to explain how and why he and the UK state establishment did all it could to stop centre left social democrat Jeremy Corbyn.

In case you're not aware his politics sit between one nation Tories and Brexity folk.

I have a feeling this is left-wing that blames Brexit and who voted for it for everything.
    jaypr's avatar
Brexit was a lie pure and simple and by now everyone should realise that.

The same people that told lies about Brexit are now lying to you about leaving the ECHR which if anyone knows will do nothing to stop small boats and immigration and will in fact strip away everyone’s rights in this country. These are the rights YOU have in the ECHR, how many of you really want to give these up?,

Why on earth would anyone buy this trash? Honestly the man is just dishonest and as biased as they come. Whats the point in reading it? At least buy something written which deploys fact and correct context.
    SampleX's avatar
Eagerly awaiting your in-depth analysis on precisely which parts of this book are "dishonest and biased" and your correction of them with honest and impartial alternative.

Before Brexit, this tool was doing phone-ins about wheelie bins and potholes. Becoming chief mouthpiece for remoan has made him a fortune, he should be grateful for Brexit.

Getting in before the comments are turned off.

Whatever you think about Labour, we need to get the Tories out.

Mr J OB is the GOAT
    chrisphillers's avatar
We need the Tories out, but we dont need Labour in and we certainly dont need to read O'Brien's dishonest trash.

Thanks OP but I cannot watch, nor listen to James O Brien, without wanting to throw something at the TV or radio.
Obviously I have not read the book, but I would suggest that is people like him that is the reason why Britain is broken?
    oliverreed's avatar
Yep he's the reason.we've not got 40 more hospitals and the national debt has trebled, I'm glad you've set me straight, you sound like a true patriot

I'm always bemused at the level of foresight people are claiming about events that will likely happen over the coming months.

But then I've also noticed that even the most ardent anti-Labour/Starmer people still can't quite bring themselves to say ".. so you're better off voting Conservative".

When discussing the left's intellectual heavyweight, O'Brien , it's important to remind everyone of his unwavering support of the disgraced convicted fraudster Carl Beech.

Left, right, muddle; the only commonality is cultural and economic entropy. The depression that was due and papered over in 2008 never went away, it was just delayed and dragged out, stretching the paper (and currency, hence inflation) thinner and thinner.

Tread carefully. All the political adults have left the room and nobody wants to deal with long term truths, just short term blame and clumsy patchwork.
  27. Roz4u's avatar
Definitely not supporting the current Govt, but I found the author - James O'Brien and his father Jim to be agenda driven and dishonest to the core. The book obviously will be biased and full of vitriol. Not worth the buy.

    Did you?

    How, specifically?

And what revealed truth do you have to specifically correct those purported errors?

Why are we taxpayers paying for a bunch of politiicians in half a dozen 'so called' different political parties whose main aim is to line their own pockets, whilst acting like silly little schoolboys and girls constantly having a pop at each others views?

You wouldn't run an efficient organisation like that.

Instead you would have a well incentivised executive board (government) containing people who would carry out the policies the majority set for them with the threat of the sack if they didn't work effectively to achieve their goals

Parliament is just a joke, and don't get me started on the House of Lords.....
  33. joebaker123's avatar
I thought, now that Britain has experienced the consequences of their induced choices, it will finally acknowledge the wrongdoings and learn on own mistakes. But reading the comments, one realizes there are plenty people who are not capable of critical thinking, factual analysis, and willing to re-assess their assumptions & own viewpoints. The indulgence of fantasizing about an unexisting reality overweights the pain of facing the harsh reality of the present. The fear of accepting a failure, and abandoning an ideological life-long comittment is too much. Its much more comfying to make yourself believe in whatever you want to believe, despite the practice and the facts annihilating entirely the foundation of that fake belief system. Moreover apart from the mental masturbation, these subjects end-up sustaining harm and loss in quality of life themselves, yet they still support the underlying causes behind this self harm & destruction.

Left/Right/Red/Green/Center these do not matter. There is no ideological commitment from any parties. What matters is the end Result. Judge the competence by that. Because:

"In Theory - there is no difference between Theory and Practice,
    In Practice - there is"
