Working my way through the different brands of Achar/Pickle [both mixed pickle and mango] in my local Indian supermarket and find Ahmed's has lots of oil and lots of red chilli. As a result it lacks the flavour of the other ingredients; likewise for Shazan's. I have found Shan's to be the best so far as it has a higher % of the vegetables/fruit with less oil, less chillis, and less salt.

With those that have lots of oil, I decant some of this off and use it a chilli oil for cooking/dipping in other recipes.

As for comparing Pataks with these, you are not really comparing the same thing. Pataks are more like chutneys [like a jam made with spices, sugar and vinegar], and so a bit sweet, whereas these are Achars that are a preserve that uses spices and oil with no sugar...both tasty, but both different!

I found pataks way too salty. Ahmed and Mitchell’s is good

Don’t knock it till you tried it, Mango achar with a Paratha is a wonderful combo. (Although never tried this brand).

What's the point to put pickle in oil?
    jazzballes's avatar
This type of pickle (Achar) is made by preserving vegetables in oil and spices.

Just be mindful that this is only available in specific areas and it won't show the availability until you have booked a slot. I wanted this pickle for some time and when I found it on Iceland a few days ago I decided to put a large order in, only to discover that half the items were unavailable when I booked a slot.

Very nice, but weird container. It’s basically a sachet of pickle in a plastic jar. Would be much better if if just came in a glass jar.

Probably plastic to keep costs down.

I've had this before. I had to throw half of it away after battling my way through the first half. It tasted very salty, even though salt was way down the ingredients list

Not hot, it's rather sweet actually.

Is this brand too spicy or can anyone recommend a brand that is a mild one.
