2 Year Guarantee Included (2nd year courtesy of John Lewis & Partners). Potential money saver.

Is the 2nd Gen really worth £35 more? There's a lot of tech here for £55! We have 3 of these dotted around our property and find them so much more useable than the screen-less ones we had previously. Putting a screen on Echo has increased the usefulness massively IME.

Same price @ Amazon but a year's less guarantee. Judgement call. If you aren't interested in Amazon's Trade-in offer this is the better buy due to the extra 12 months warranty IMO.

Product description

The Echo Show 8 combines the smart convenience of the Alexa voice assistant with rich stereo sound and an 8” HD screen so it can also show you things. So you can set alarms and timers, display your favourite photos, check the news and weather and get info. And you can stream music from your favourite streaming service, and, with Amazon Music, you can see on screen lyrics. And it’s all hands-free

Sound and vision
It’s easy to catch up on today’s news or sports highlights. You can watch TV series and films on subscription services like Prime Video and Netflix, or music videos, on the Echo Show 8’s high definition screen. Use your voice to request a song, artist, or genre through streaming services like Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, and more (subscriptions may apply). You can also see song lyrics and album art with Amazon Music (UK only).

Keep in touch
You can call almost anyone hands free, including UK mobile and residential numbers (from UK only, emergency calling not supported), other Echo devices, and the Alexa app. Or make video calls to other Echo devices with a screen or the Alexa app. With multiple devices, you can drop in on other rooms throughout the home, or make an announcement to every room with a compatible Echo device. So you can let the family know dinner’s ready or remind the kids that it’s bedtime.

Privacy built-in
It’s built with multiple layers of privacy protection. You can turn off the mics and camera with the press of a button, or slide the built-in cover to easily close the camera, and you have control over voice recordings and can view, hear or delete them whenever you like.

Control compatible devices
You can manage other compatible smart home devices on its simple, interactive display, or by using your voice. So you could switch on the lamp before getting out of bed, dim the lights to watch a film, or view security cameras. Other compatible smart devices are sold separately.

Alexa Skills
Access Alexa’s tens of thousands of skills by simply asking. You can set timers, add items to lists, and create calendar events and reminders to keep you on schedule. You can also check the news, weather or traffic. Ask for sports scores, film screening times or information. All with just your voice. With a growing number of skills, Alexa is always getting smarter. Skills are like apps and help you do more, such as play relaxing sounds or test your music knowledge. Just say, “Alexa, what are your top skills?”

Some services may require subscription

    John Lewis > eBay

No contest with John Lewis you get a proper 12 month warranty. With eBay if the seller doesn't want to co-operate then at best you get 6 months and that would involve getting your bank involved.

I have both gen in the 8 at home. I notice no differences at all, mind you I probably don't put them through their paces like some might, where a difference might be more noticeable.

Paid £37.50 for the 2nd gen i8 n December from Amazon with trading in a echo show 5 (1st) and the usual discounts with a trade in (also the 2nd gen was reduced to £69 at that time)

If in no hurry and have something to trade it might be worth waiting on the next reduction from Amazon. Otherwise if I needed one now I would be happy at this price for 1st gen (I noticed no difference between them)

I had one of the Gen 1 ones and it went faulty in November a couple of weeks before the 2 year guarantee was up. John Lewis were great and offered a full refund as a replacement was out of stock at the time so definitely feel the extra guarantee with them is worth it. I have the show 15 now but feel the sound quality on the show 8 was superior.

Anyone know how well it works for automatically bringing up a Ring doorbell feed when it's pressed?
I've heard before that it takes so long to bring it up, you may as well go answer the door. Hoping it's been improved by now..
