It definitely is the iPad Mini version 1 and not the Retina version. The reasons for this are :

    1. The spec says it has an A5 chip. The iPad Mini Retina version has an A7 chip >

    http://direct.asda.com/iPad-mini-Wi-Fi---tablet---16-GB---7.9%22/000556576,default,pd.html

    2. The price. There's no way a retina mini would be this price.

I've got one of these and in my opinion, the ipad minis form factor is absolutely perfect for a tablet as I find 7" too small and 10" slightly too big ( oo er ! ). I did previously own a more expensive android tablet ( Asus transformer prime ) but just couldn't get along with it like I do with the Mini

I did think about upgrading to the retina display model but this does everything I want it to so can't justify the cost.

Heat for me, £199 is a good price

But the device is bigger. That's like saying the Nexus 10 is better than the iPad Mini because it has a bigger screen oO Plus if they wanted a bigger screen they'd be looking at an 8" tablet not 7"

I love when Apple users try to justify paying so much for shiny stuff with an Apple logo on it

wow old tech for £200. Hot deal but soon to be redundant tech.

soon to be redundant? You're a bit of a fool. I know plenty of people still using iPad 2s and they still get the job done. Apple and iOS is worth what it costs for that exact reason they age gracefully unlike your windows/android tat.

and last a hell of a lot longer. Cant complain about the nexus at its price but the build quality is miles apart understandably.

Great offer for the price, Ive had an ipad mini for just over a year now. great little device, it has replaced the netbook that I use as home and is small enough to fit in a pocket. I use mine mainly as an ebook reader, but its great for watchin films and surfin the net when out and about. Well worth a look

    Having owned both, nothing.

Both fab tabs, go with the brand and price you like the best.

Currently running the Nexus 32gb 2013 tab and its fab, does everything we want and more. Great for long flights etc :o))

I've been round the internet a few times so i'll ignore the "moron" comment.

I'd say a lot of people on here would be buying based on experience and knowledge however the other 9/10 people just buy it for the label and all that "amazing hardware" and "selection of apps" (which is subjective) goes to waste on watching videos and playing candy crush.

I guess my question would be - is the ipad mini the best ipad out there, or even the best tablet (hardware and apps considered) for that price?

So many Android & iOS warriors in these kind of threads, why can't you just leave each other alone? Your not going to change the other persons mind, so why bother?

I've owned iPad (3rd Gen) & also Android tablets (Nexus 7 & Excite Pro) both have good and bad, why not purchase what you prefer & leave everyone else to decide for themselves?

Cracking deal by the way, which is the point of the thread, used a friends Mini & is the usual Apple standard build wise. If I didn't have the two Android tablets above, I'd be purchasing this.

Don't own either but have just purchased the mini

Review Article that mentions comparison to Nexus build in the summary but if you read the full article it does compare both in some aspects

iPad mini - VerdictCertainly the most desirable 7-inch tablet on the … iPad mini - VerdictCertainly the most desirable 7-inch tablet on the market, the iPad mini’s £269 starting price is considerably higher than the competition but for that outlay you get a device that, although not specs superior, is a far more enticing option than much of what is already on the market.Combining a brushed aluminium back with seamlessly curved edges and a fascia that will be familiar to full-sized iPad owners, the iPad mini is a device that looks and feels every penny that you pay for it. A step on from the plastic backed likes of the Google Nexus 7, the iPad mini is unrivalled in terms of build quality and style.More than a simple piece of eye candy, however, the iPad mini is a joy to use and one which, thanks to its slightly larger 7.9-inch display is immersive and perfectly sized for a combination of business and pleasure purposes. If you have recently splashed out on a full-sized iPad 3 or iPad 4 then this might not be for you. If, however, you are looking to make the plunge into the tablet market for the first time and can live without an HD display, it’s hard to look past the new iPad mini.Read more at http://www.trustedreviews.com/ipad-mini_Tablet_review_multimedia-battery-life-and-verdict_Page-4#iwBA021gaWu8jQq8.99

I was comparing an iPad Air and iPad 2 side by side at the weekend after the GF upgraded.

Honestly, the higher res screen is nice, but I wouldn't say the difference was that huge. So it'll be less noticeable on an 8" screen as it's more condensed in the first place.

The extra power of the newer processor is probably a bigger factor. But I have an iPad Mini (gen 1) myself and still find it perfectly usable. But I don't run latest heavy duty games on it or anything. If you don't either, you'll probably get by just fine with this version.

Decent price for what it is. But it only still sells for this much as it's an Apple device. Any other brand would sell older generations for a lower price than this. Nexus 7 for example ....

For reference, I also have a Note 1 tablet and my dad uses a 2012 Nexus 7. I find them all perfectly usable. The Nexus 7 is smaller, but does fit nicely in the hand and is a very usable little tablet. My dad likes it. (He's in his 60's) My Note 1 is also very nice to use and feels snappier in use than the mini. But I do admit I like the form factor of the mini.

    FaceTime.

Or you could use Skype. Which doesn't limit you to only video chatting to other iDevices ....

I have an iPad and Android tablet and in all honesty, there is very little that one can do that the other can't. In both directions. A few OS specific apps, but that's about it as far as I'm concerned. iOS is FAR less customisable though. So it you like fiddling and tweaking the look and feel of your device, you won't get far on an iPad.

iMessages and FaceTime. Which means it's easy to keep in contact with anyone who has an expensive iPhone, biz types - and is useless at using other messaging apps. My brother is a point in fact, though I have managed to just get him to install WhatsApp, but it took a while of badgering.

The retina is overrated on this size of device, and this is both lighter and thinner than the iPad Mini Retina. If you are thinking of installing a screen protector, that also diminishes the idea of going for Retina, as you are putting something between you and the display.

If you drop it too, your only £200 quid out of pocket, not £320 (compared to retina) I bought the 64GB iPad Mini Cellular for £260 from Currys all in, got a 90 day EE 6GB Data card from Flubit for £15.47, via prepay mania.

After a month, there was a tiny spec of dust between the display and digitiser, in the centre of the screen. Without receipt, just an enquiry - Apple store replaced it on the spot, within 10 minutes, with a new iPad.

For £200, the the total cost of ownership is lower for this than a Nexus, they keep their value better.

If that was my main use, I'd rather have a Note 8.

I find the s-pen much easier to scribble quick notes down with rather than a keyboard. I have an iPad Mini and Note 3 phone with me at work. If I'm in a meeting, the Note 3 comes with me for note taking, the iPad stays on my desk.

The s-pen has the other obvious advantage of being able to scribble diagrams and formulae quickly and easily in the same document as well.

Price-matched in John Lewis no problems!

Took a few minutes to find the iPad on ASDA's site as it didn't show up first time round, but fine once found. £199 for Space Grey model with 2 year guarantee is perfect. Briefly played around with a Nexus 7 2013 and couldn't believe how big the borders were around the edge. No doubts a great piece of kit, but the iPad is just a straight-up better designed tablet.
