Been on the hunt for a new laptop and was thinking of a Macbook, but in the end checked the Dell outlet and saw this XPS. With the discount code brings it down to £808, brand new they're on there for about £1200, so a very decent saving. Not sure on the refurb quality but it doesn't state it has any dents or marks so hopefully will be in good condition.

These do not have removable hard drives nor removable ram. If something goes wrong then the whole motherboard needs to be replaced and everything reinstalled. This needs 5 year on-site pro support. I've had my mb replaced on a few occasions over last few years now.

On/off/fingerprint reader issue = new motherboard.
    Faulty fan = new motherboard
    Ram issue = new motherboard

That may well be an issue for me, do you have this model? I've never heard of you having to replace the whole motherboard just because of a new fan.

I have seen some reddit comments about getting a new XPS 9315 and complaining about the fan noise since new. So I guess it'll be a case of me waiting to see if I get any issues. I'll probably make a decision on my last return day on whether I'll risk keeping it.

It's strange why you'd need to replace the mb though, I've just seen they sell the fan part as well.

Don't get this machine, I purchased 30 of these for my business, exact model. Overheats constantly and the keyboard and trackpad area gets uncomfortably warm.

the 2x M2 Airs I purchased however. stay dead cool even when doing intensive work

Yeah, I've sent two back. Nightmare for reliability.

And lots of other reported issues. Battery, display and system failure.

    Ok, it's an XPS....but 800 quid for a Refurb???

Screen is OK, but nothing special (no touch, no 4k).

Maybe I'm getting old, but didn't the dell outlet use to have some real bargains?

The display on my work xps13 is a smeary mess. Wouldn't want one for a personal device.

800 for a refurb is perfectly reasonable when dells XPS is like the MacBook of windows , great track pad, good keyboard, yes it's soldered on memory but 16gb is plenty plus it's clocked higher than unsoldered.

I just bought a refurb from Dell and am over the moon with it. Mine had a new battery in I assume they do that for all of them

Hmm not sure about the price for this. CPU performance isn't £800 worth, better performing laptops for cheaper. Paying for XPS features no doubt. Overpriced in my view.

This doesn't have the build or screen of the XPS but it totally destroys it for compute performance at the expense of energy efficiency/battery performance >

I'm not too fussed on the screen, but when you mentioned the battery life. Do you mean the battery on the XPS is better than the deal you've posted?

I'm doing some light Web development on an Asus i7 8th gen, 12GB at the moment and the battery on that is dire. If I open up any adobe app along with VSCode I have to charge it after less than 2 hours. Battery performance along with the CPU, RAM and SSD are my main priorities.

I bought a Dell XPS 13 (refurb) and it basically looked brand new. On a 13 inch, FHD looks fine IMO plus it means longer battery life. Very happy with the build quality and portability of the laptop. Would recommend if you want something near the build quality of a Macbook. (edited)

I've had lots of kit from the Dell Outlet and it's always in absolutely pristine condition, even when it says it's "Scratch and Dent". My last laptop was S&D and I never did find whatever it was that made it so. They've all been superb and I could not tell that they were not new.

Still use my 2013 XPS 13 though in 10 years it's lost about 6 pixels in a small clump, the battery has been replaced, the mSATA SSD has been replaced (because I wanted 1TB not 256GB, not because it broke). Sure the dual core processor isn't exactly a speed king especially in 2023 but otherwise at about the same £800 that this deal is, it's worked out at about £80 a year so I am well happy. Oh, and the mouse is crap but I've always hated touchpads. (edited)

Dell XPS refurn, £800, that is expensive. If you go to ebay, there are plenty of used of that spec.

I did check eBay and literally couldn't see much for this spec under £850. That was for refurb, not used. I would rather get a refurb directly off Dell for the warranty and the fact they usually come brand new. Over getting a used one from an eBay seller, but again that's just personally, I know eBay does have dells on some auctions that usually sell for around 60-70% of RRP so you can find a bargain on eBay I will admit. But you could say that for almost every item you buy I suppose.

Refurbs are fine from the Outlet, I've had loads. Usually you can get a £300-600 discount depending on what discount codes they have and they usually change the codes week to week. I think this is a good deal if it's the sort of thing you're looking for.

Daily driving an company XPS, I am glad I did not pay for it (although I would be happy to pay to change it for something else...)

We have had XPS 13/15 for home/school/university use for the last 10 years, with most off the outlet. Out of 8, had the motherboard go on one, but it was so used that it was better just to get another. I have changed keyboards and batteries, but the problem now is the design with the all metal chassis. I have a similar Zen and it really doesn't match the old XPS. Prices on the outlet can now be more than buying new.

So, it's now a Surface and Alienware for offspring and an XPS 13 and Zen for the elders.

Not sure about the XPS but the 1250U in my work latitude always has the fans on full blast doing anything. Really annoying actually…

Can’t seem to check emails without it getting hot!
