Lots of other higher end machines available!

I've gone for the 23.420 as the wife loves her milky coffees and this unit also has a filter (as we live in a very hard water area)!

Obviously these are refurbished units, but are from De'Longhi themselves and come with a 1 year warranty........and I gather they've been popular previously?

This is the main coffee machine in our office.
It's still going strong after 8 years and being used at least 20 odd times each weekday.

Whose job is it to clean it?

    Thanks OP - very tempting!!

Does anyone know if there exists some kind of comparisson chart with the differences between all these De'Longhi models?

I had a 4200 for years, and the mother in law had a 2800. The 4200 sounded more robust whilst the 2800 sounded a bit weak. The 4200 also proved itself to be more reliable.

This could just be an age related think because mine was 5 years older than hers. They may have just changed component suppliers.

That said, if I was buying either of these, I’d go 4200.

They always leak for me, usually the reason they were sent back and they never check them.

That is not my experience at all. DeLonghi refurbs are proper refurbs. Don't mistake them for the musicMagpie wipe down with a cloth refurbs. (edited)

I only ever drink Lattes and have gone off the pod machines. Anyone any idea which would be the best one of these to go with. I wouldnt know difference between the steam wand or a frother. TBH I thought they were all the same.

You use a steam wand to squirt steam into your milk and froth it up.
The milk frother has milk in a container in the unit and froths it up on the way through the wand.

Steam wand = squirts steam to froth your milk
Milk frother/wand = squirts frothed milk

I got my ESAM4200 a good few years ago and it is still going strong. It was bought new but I also bought a ECAM23.420 as a back up from the DeLonghi ebay site last year.

It was absolutely immaculate. It didn't come with any accessories though e.g. water hardness tester but I could live without those. I was particularly fortunate that I got it when Delonghi and ebay both had promotions on at the same time which meant that I only paid £146.19 for it. Best purchase I have made for a while. This deal is obviously not as good but still good enough.

I bought a 2200 refurb from ebay bout 2 years ago. Worked perfectly. Same as 2800 apart from the colour. For £147 it's a deal.

Bought a delonghi 44.620.S last week, love it, great bit of kit.

Brilliant machines. To improve the milk frothing just take the black tube off the steam wand you’ll get better quality milk froth
    rev6's avatar
With it it's just a frothy mess

Got the 4200 a year ago, refurbished, and it was like new. Perfect condition. No signs it was ever used.
  11. A57ton's avatar
Best value for money in my opinion is the 290 or the 350.
    Tom|Nbk's avatar
Which one? I opted for the cheaper 290 as I used to have a machine with integrated milk frother and I was a swine for not cleaning it properly (not the machines fault)

Assumed the wand would suit me better and easier to clean once I master it.. (edited)

Arrived, brand new, all wrapping on etc. Just missing the water filter. Is this essential or will it work without? Very soft water area here!
    A57ton's avatar
I don’t believe they come with one, and if you have soft water you don’t need one anyway (edited)

Let me know how you all get on when your machines turn up - previous refurbs have been really good, so expect the same with these!

I wasn’t intending to buy a coffee machine today and then the model I was looking at was the last one in stock so now I have a coffee machine on its way…

    Excellent machines.

    heat!
  17. andrew.pernet's avatar
Bought one last year been very happy with it, live in hard water area and needs descaling about every 3-4 months, water container not too large, but as I remind myself have to refill kettle too.
  18. jamesdew's avatar
Are there better machines? Sure, but for this price what are you going to get that even comes close?
    A57ton's avatar
Not for the money no. The better machine would still be a Delonghi. If I was spending over £1500 I’d go Jura.
  19. Tom|Nbk's avatar
    Grabbed the 290, great deal!
  20. tomlench's avatar
Thanks! I’ve had “bean to cup” saved as my stalwart Phillips Saeco packed in last month after about 10 years of service - no email notification but glad I was browsing and didn’t miss these, just what I was after! Thank you!
  21. madbroon's avatar
Just spent an hour trying to learn about the different models, super complicated! Bought the ETAM29.510.SB. fingers crossed!
  22. Tom|Nbk's avatar
Got mine, been really good to have a proper coffee in the morning. Happy with the machine thanks for posting.
    ytfc_nick's avatar
Hope you don’t mind me asking- I’ve never had a bean to cup machine before and was just wondering can you fit a mug underneath this or do you need to transfer it from a smaller cup?

Had mine for a few years before swapping out for a sage espresso machine last year. The sage is much better tasting coffee - on a deal here for less than £300
    god's avatar
I will second that, managed to get a good deal 270 on a sage a barrista express after having one of these, makes excellent coffee but it's sensitive with beans some will extract to quick without pressure, adjusted the burr on mine and use the Amazon espresso beans can't remember the name but £20 for 4kg and is great, learning how to do latte art as you can steam the milk properly with the sage, the delonghi could only get a foam on the top which is not the same at all and it would make a disgusting mess inside that is impossible to clean, having said that I thought it made good coffee and the price point is very good, my only complaint about the sage is I have to microwave the coffee for 30 seconds because it's not hot enough, wether making a latte/cappuccino or using the hot water function to make americano
  25. MKP365's avatar
I have had the 2800 for a good few years and it’s still going strong. It can take a while to swap between coffee and milk functions - I’ve recently purchased a milk frother but this is for odd occasion my wife wants a coffee - or the kids want to do a hot chocolate. Bit safer and easier for the kids to use I think. I have my coffee psychotic black though.

I’m sure there are better machines out there but for £150 it’s worth doing- unless you want to spend more then shop around.
    bobby_dazzler's avatar
Not sure exactly if I got the right gist but to reduce time between steaming and making more coffee.... after pressing the steam button to turn steam off... just open the steam tap and jet out the remaining steam into an empty vessel and you'll be good to go again for coffee-making
  26. d3m0n's avatar
Good machine, we have had our refurb for a few years now and is still going strong without any issues. Dont be fooled that this will make the best coffee possible, its a solid performer and great for the dosh.

However i will be investing in a Sage Barista "refurb" next time they pop up
    nathanlhughes's avatar
I fancied the barista but went for the sage smart grinder and bambino pro for the same price and definitely got more for my money

Whatever machine you choose, if you are making espresso then BUY FRESHLY ROASTED BEANS!

    Avoid the supermarket trash

These machines make fabulous coffee with the right beans

I've had this for about 2 years and it's a bit noisy but performs well. Purchased as a De'Longhi refurb from eBay and it arrived in new condition with not a mark on it,andstill with blue protective stuff on.

Went for the 290, looks spot on, used to have an old wand one but never really mastered it and it put off the rest of the family, this looks spot on for what I need!, thanks OP. (edited)

They release them onto Ebay quite regularly.......just this time there happens to be the 15% code as well.

They do still have a few of the higher end models available, but start at ~£245 and upwards.
  35. aforumac's avatar
Damn it, catching up on saved alerts just now, missed the best ones it seems. Then found a ECAM350.55.B for £350-15%, so would have been just under £300. Kept reading comments, went out of stock! Why don't I ever learn, buy first think later!

Any thoughts on the next best one to get please? ETAM29.660 for approx £280 worth it? (edited)

Mine arrived yesterday - no filter (though I had already ordered them off Amazon as I live in an ultra hard water kent)......but did come with a few other accessories.
Really pleased with it so far!
  37. tygr's avatar
I’m so disappointed with mine. Almost impossible to get it to work. Can anyone who has the 290.21 who can make coffee using already ground coffee please help me. I’ve made 3 cups so far and about 30 attempts to make it that end up with the coffee falling through the machine.
    A57ton's avatar
Have you read the manual, you can only put ground coffee in when the infuser is ready and in the correct position.
  38. gxw's avatar
Sigh, it looks great, but needs descaling so had to order descaler..  bit disappointed in that as would have thought a refurbished machine would not need this!
    A57ton's avatar
Why would you think that? They need descaling often, but the frequency depends on your water hardness. Don’t forget to program that bit.
  39. Shaun_Clapperton's avatar
I got the model in picture from these which was also a refurb and it was practically brand new, absolute brilliant machine use it 2-3 times per day. (edited)
    Rickardo's avatar
Same, I'm over a year in with on average 4 coffees per day (between my wife and I), although more with friends/family over. Easy to use and maintain.
