Update 1
43p price drop! £158.57 now

It's been a long time since we had this lower price for the 3rd version.
I would 100% recommend it. A great way to save energy, indeed.

  • Saving energy starts with your thermostat. Your thermostat controls 60% of your energy bill. So shouldn’t it help you save energy? The Nest Learning Thermostat does. Since 2011, it’s saved over 4 billion kWh of energy in millions of homes worldwide*. Because it learns from you. It gets to know the temperature that you like while you’re at home. And turns itself down when you’re away. It even learns how your home warms up or how draughty it is, so it only uses the energy that it needs
  • Auto-Schedule. Just turn it up and down. It learns the temperatures that you like and creates a schedule for you
  • Home/Away Assist. It automatically adjusts the temperature after you’ve left. It can even turn off your hot water if you’re away for a few days
  • Hot water. Now you can control your hot water tank. And give your hot water a boost when you need it
  • OpenTherm technology. Nest now uses OpenTherm technology to modulate your high-efficiency condensing boiler
  • Remote control. Change the temperature and control your hot water tank from anywhere using your mobile, tablet or laptop
  • Farsight. When the Nest Thermostat spots you across the room, it lights up beautifully to show you the time, temperature or weather

Thanks @sisqoboy , I’ve been looking for one of these for a bit cheaper than RRP for a while! (edited)

Yeah, I think this is the lowest price we usually have when it's on sale.

No, permanent cable needed via stand as far as I'm aware

Anyone getting one of these it's well worth wiring it up using Opentherm to maximise your gas savings.

Can anyone help advise if this is suitable? Bought a previous smart stat that wasn't despite thinking I'd done the right homework.

I have two heating zones (upstairs and downstairs), the downstairs controller also controls the hot water.

Would this work for me doing hot water too? And does that mean I need to buy two?

I assume you have two valves that open or close depending on which part of the house you need to heat?

You can buy two and control the whole house with Nest. I have this setup myself. Or you can buy 1 Nest and have it control the valve that heats the part of the house you spend most of your time in.

I've had mine since circa September and can't say it's improved my energy usage/bill in anything like the sort of positive manner that people have told me it would.

Are there some good articles or recommended setups that people have found helpful?

It saves money in the sense that it won’t be on when you aren’t at home or if you have the eco settings. For us, we are saving money purely due to ease of control I.E. not having to keep going up to thermostats and programmer to control it and better tuning of schedule. Overall it’s not worth upgrading unless you value being able to use your phone to control the heating and hot water.

I like the convenience of it, being able to control it while away is very useful.

There's 2 things I wish they would change though. It boggles my mind that if you want to use Opentherm, then you have to enable "True Radiant" which enables preheating and you cannot disable it without also turning off Opentherm. Being able to toggle these independently would be great.
The other thing is the smallest block of time you can set in the schedule is an hour. So combined with the preheating, you can easily end up running the boiler for almost 2 hours in the winter instead of just blasting it on for 30 mins.

I also found this frustrating, but I schedule mine through the alexa app. It comes on in the morning for 30 mins. Just remember to disable the feature when you’re away!

Had to buy mine from Screwfix at this price in November. A great way to adjust the temp automatically for the night. So we have the temp around 20-21 and 23-24 during the day. Love it.

I have the first version and although you can switch hot water on/off using the app or the device itself., for some reason you can't tell Alexa to Switch the hot water on. Works fine for heating, mind. (edited)

Same price at Toolstation, and I beleive you can use it in conjunction with Quidco's £10 bonus on £50 spend at Toolstation, which brings the price down to £149.

I purchased one of these from screwfix a few years ago. Haven't yet been able to get it installed though, as our local authority won't allow us too sadly.😔 I believe we have got a system boiler with hot water, it has an emersion heater switch for a backup, (which we will never use!)😳 As it is far too expensive to run. We will be having a Combi boiler installed soon, and we were given the choice of having this connected to it for full use, or having the local authorities version called "Halo". Now we were also told, if we chose the G.Nest version, we wouldn't get any support if it went wrong. Basically, we would be on our own to get it fixed. So we have chosen to go with Halo instead.
I guess that would make sense really, as we are with the local authority, we let them deal with it if it went wrong.
Such a shame though, as we have everything Google in the home, and we were looking forward to getting this up and running.

Just a quick question, if anyone knows, whilst we are waiting for the new Combi boiler to be installed, could we use it with a micro usb lead and a stand, i'm guessing the heat link would still need to be installed to the boiler/programmable wall thermostat to be used judging by the install guide it does seem so.
Also, not sure which version i have, but mine is the: T3028GB I'm taking this is the third Gen version? (edited)

If anything was going to wrong it’s usually the boiler, you have a 3rd gen yes and if a part did go faulty you obviously have the Google warranty or people on eBay sell parts too if you were out of warranty. I wouldn’t bother by the halo, but I’m guessing the new combi is going to be ideal? Which has opentherm so I would get your nest installed via opentherm if you want to remain in the Google eco system and that’s what you really want, if you ever move you can take it with you as the LA want nothing to do with it

Terrible customer service. It's a pretty thermostat, I'll give it that, but the smart stuff it does is poorly implemented (we turned it off after a few months of constantly being annoyed at random behaviour) and the hot water boost does not work via smart speakers or api for home assistant. When we had some issues with faulty device the customer service was appalling - we spent hours on the phone to get them to replace. Wish I had gotten a hive.

The "Random behaviour" is typically because of a setting called "True radiant". It means that even if your schedule has the heating coming on at, say, 7am, it might choose to "pre-heat" it so that it reaches your desired temperature by 7am rather than just coming on at 7am. For me this meant the heating was sometimes coming on as early as 3am which was absolutely ridiculous.

Took me a while to work this out too. I'd recommend just switching that setting off to be honest and then it will follow the schedule that you've set (or what it has automatically learnt) rather than feeling quite so random.

Many other vendors doing the same or better for 1/3 of the price eg Salus RT510RF/TX working excellent for 3 years with my boiler...

yours would be classed as a dumb thermostat, not a smart stat. hence its cheaper price

These are good thats why they hold the price. No point on an old boiler though. To make the most of NEST the boiler will need to have 'Open Therm' inputs, which will maximise control. Same thing with Tado, Hive, and all the others, they work the same way with modern boilers but behave no different to a cheap room, wired snap switch otherwise. The marketing winds me up, people buy them cos there are 'smart' but they are no good if they are trying to control a 20 yr old boiler.. (edited)

True. 20 years would be an epic life for a residential boiler though. I've just installed on my 10yr old glow worm, but will just reinstall on my new boiler once this one blows in next couple years 🤷‍♂️

No smart valves or cheap room thermostat. Pretty useless. Nice looking, expensive on off switch. And the way to program it is atrocious.
