    WD40 vs 3in1 oil vs GT85

The original formula WD-40 isn’t a good lubricant. It’s primarily a water dispersant (that’s what the “WD” in the name came from), and can give some temporary lubricant effect, but that doesn’t last once it dries. It can penetrate rust if left to soak.

The original 3-in-One is a general purpose light oil, and will lubricate as you’d expect an oil to do. It can penetrate rust if left to soak, and a film of oil can prevent rust forming. It doesn’t disperse water so well. It’s the thickest (least runny) of the three.

GT85 contains PTFE which creates a lasting film of low-friction synthetic resin (PTFE is the same stuff they use to make Teflon), without need for oil. It’s thinner and less messy than oil, disperses water, and can penetrate / prevent rust.

The WD-40 and 3-in-One brands also have other products that contain PTFE. All three brands are now owned by the same company. (edited)

Worth knowing that PTFEs don’t break down in the environment, so are extremely polluting. Not sure if there are alternatives without PTFE in, but worth considering if you are looking to buy this. Google ‘Forever chemicals’ and the film ‘Dark Waters’ with Mark Ruffalo (aka the Hulk).

I'm spraying it into locks, not the soil

If you are close to an Aldi, it's in-store at £2.49.

How does this compare with WD40? I usually spray a bit on the cambelt and timing chain every morning to keep things running smooth...

    WD40 is not a lubricant

I buy it from Aldi all the time and bath my motorbikes in it, always gives them a nice lubricated shine!

Is this any good for trampoline springs, as I’ll buy it for my neighbour?

Yes, but it'll wash off eventually or after a rain. Has to reapply it regularly.

This is doing better job than WD40 in every aspect, even to free rusty bolts, where WD40 supposed to be better, as not only penetrates, but lubricates the same time.

Good stuff this, like WD40 but much better.

Fixed a really annoying squeek on our radiator rubbing against the floor board beautifully. Great for door squeeks too. A great product to have on top of the bike stuff.
