This is £42 more, for the Ryzen 5 2500U version. Honestly, in terms of raw value, it's not as good as the other one, you get a slightly faster CPU with SMT (8 threads), it benchmarks around 10-15% faster and has the RX Vega 8 (not 6) but as the original one is sold out, this is the next best deal.

You still get the same great quality chassis, keyboard, touchpad, display, expandable memory, etc. 25 available at time of listing. Despite the extra cost, I believe this is still the best all-round refurb laptop you will find in this price range.

Useful things to know about this laptop:
  • True quad-core Ryzen 5, benchmarks close to or above i5-8350U
  • All metal chassis, lid, palmrest and underside
  • Expandable memory, two DIMM slots
  • USB C charging, HDMI out
  • Full HD IPS display
  • Best-in-class keyboard (possibly backlit - doesn't say so but many EliteBooks are) and etched glass touchpad
  • RX Vega 8 integrated graphics = light gaming (eg Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League, etc)
  • Windows 11 Professional installed and licensed (unofficial support)
  • 1 year warranty, decent seller

    Seems about the right price.

Downgraded from a 16 inch Macbook pro in my last job, to one of these things in my current one.

It seems cheap not normal as EliteBook G5/6 series don’t typically fall below £200 especially not with warranty. I don’t know where else you can get this level of build quality along with a half-decent quad-core CPU and other key specs (8GB RAM, 256GB, full HD IPS display) for £161. It is an uncompromised system that’ll do the job for most people buying on a budget. (edited)

No, that was the Ryzen 3 2300U version - which I referenced in this post. The is the Ryzen 5 2500U. I posted both of them.

I like these laptops and this is a good price but just one word of caution - check the corners of the case when you get it. I was involved in an IT project where hundreds of users had these and once they returned we noticed a few had been knocked, causing a slight gap, some more noticeable than others but obviously not ideal. The case looks and feels very premium but obviously once that metal has taken a hit it's not going to bounce back into place like a plastic / carbon one. It's only a minor thing and likely wouldn't affect many but still worth checking rather than noticing it months down the line. (edited)

These have unibody type cases and corner dents are very noticeable, because they clip into each other, a knock will cause the parts to not fit and stick out or over. It’s worth checking but it shouldn’t be the case for ‘very good refurbs’. I’ve had a lot of these and you have to be quite careless and clumsy to do severe damage to the corners. Likewise if you damage the back corners the lid may catch. If it’s obvious it’s had heavy corner damage and the parts don’t fit properly, get it returned.

However, this is true of any metal alloy system including others like the HP Envy, MacBooks and Dell XPS.

I agree - it is worth doing a full visual inspection when you get, which is the case for any used item imo. You don’t want to find out later on then be at risk of the seller claiming you did it. (edited)

Hi @plewis00 I was just about to bite on this but then saw hotukdeals.com/dea…691 what are your thoughts on the two please? It's for a boisterous 6 year old girl for Roblox.

This EliteBook with the Ryzen 5 APU has better integrated graphics than the Yoga X380 (which is probably preferable for Roblox), this can also take more RAM later and has a more durable build - so I would expect it to survive long-term better than the X380. What makes you think the Yoga X380 might be more tempting - unless your daughter would like the touchscreen and folding options?

Good - as long as it is very good used condition like they said, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Can someone point me in the right direction where to buy 16gb ram or 32gb never upgraded ram before, just making sure I buy the right one.

    Thanks

This is good value or local CEX:
    Crucial RAM 8GB DDR4 3200MHz CL22 (or 2933MHz or 2666MHz) Portable Memory CT8G4SFRA32A amzn.eu/d/4…Jhb

You just need DDR4 SO-DIMMs at 2400 or faster and it’ll be fine. Can’t really get it wrong.

    Yep, sold out sadly.

I did pick one up though (arrives Thursday).

Metal chassis, USB C, decent spec for the money and after looking at videos, very easy to upgrade storage and RAM.

Pro rather than Home licence, even has a year's warranty.

I just come back from holiday and really didn't want to take the gaming laptop due to the travel, it's a very expensive machine etc.

This fits the bill perfectly and is a snip at this price.

Thanks to the poster for putting up this deal

How can you tell which Elitebook has the privacy display? I know it's got a better sRGB color gamut unlike the standard one.
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00 Author
There are about 9 options for the display. The SureView display is not common and honestly, quite annoying as even when turned off it cripples the viewing angle, it does have better colours and brightness but the viewing angles are as bad as a TN display. You are likely to get the basic full HD IPS 250 nit 45% gamut panel, I'm sure someone will complain but for a laptop at this price, it's more than usable and good enough.

The link takes to the vega 6, was there a vega 8 version?
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00 Author
It’s a mistake, presumably they copied the other listing - Ryzen 5 2500U APU has RX Vega 8 onboard.

    What’s the difference between the 700 & 800 series?

    I know that

    G = generation
    8/7xx = screen size

But I can’t find any details on what actually makes it a 700 or an 800 series.
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00 Author
    Nothing.

700/800 series are the same but for some dumb reason HP called the AMD series EliteBook 7x5 (where x is the screen size + 10) until the G7. At the G7, the AMD series became the 845 and the Intel series was the 840 (or 830/850). The AMD 700 series are the same chassis and quality as the 800s and not in any way inferior but the naming made people think it was.

    Last digit 0 = Intel, last digit 5 = AMD. Middle digit 3 = 13.3”, 4 = 14.0”, 5=15.6”.

Thanks - I think so too. The full metal chassis are a cut above the rest and gives you solid foundation for one of the best keyboards around and has a glass touchpad that’s one of the best on any Windows laptop ever made.

Appreciate 100 quid is 100 quid, but the lenovo 12th gen Intel for 280 is well worth the money if you can stretch to it
    plewis00's avatar

    Is that this one?
    hotukdeals.com/dea…500

It’s good spec and will be faster but it’s £120 more, so nearly double the price and the build quality is the opposite end of the spectrum to an EliteBook. So it comes down to specs or the complete package. Also, no OS on the IdeaPad which may or may not be a problem.

I used one of these for a while. It's a very well built piece of kit, but has a couple of drawbacks (other than the CPU not being officially W11 compatible). Firstly the screen, although decent quality, is rather dim and needs full brightness for indoor use. Secondly the CPU runs rather hot which means the fan keeps spinning up even when doing undemanding tasks - and it's a fast-spinning and fairly high pitched fan which though not particularly loud can be a bit annoying in quiet surroundings.
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00 Author
You are correct about all of this - CPU isn't officially Windows 11 compatible, though seller preinstalls it, but I still use Windows 10 anyway (personally). The screen is rated at 220 nits which is on the dim side for a modern machine, but that's still brighter than the usual 200 nits on cheap TN displays, it is usable though. And also, the CPU does run hot, the Ryzens do for some reason (but they are still quite efficient) and that does keep the fan running, though I didn't find it that intrusive.

hmm, I didn't think Ryzen 5 2500u is officially supported by Windows 11....

Although Windows 11 is installed, there could be issues with Windows updates in future?
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00 Author
It’s not but seems to work fine. I doubt Microsoft will break updates as it would open a huge can of worms and cause massive PR backlash.
  19. gt1915's avatar
    gt1915
If there are update issues surely you could install Win 10 via Rufus etc and have peace of mind. I'm assuming its easy to replace the HDD and put in a slightly higher capacity?
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00 Author
Windows 10 is fine on this and 11 seems ok but lacks unofficial support for no reason other than it can, I use 10 still anyway on all my machines even the latest ones. The drive is an M.2 SSD no mechanical drives in this and yes, it’s easy to get to and replace by design. Nothing stopping you putting 32GB RAM and a 4TB SSD in this afaik.

It’s Vega 8, it’ll do light gaming ok but nothing too serious. Look up the APU to confirm it’s the RX Vega 8.

Received mine today and am quite happy with it. It was originally tied to another company's autopilot but a quick reboot cured it as per the message I received from the seller.

Runs Roblox ok and is a touch heavier than I was hoping but on the whole I'm pleased for the price. Think I'll upgrade it to 16GB for £10, not that it needs it from what I've seen so far. Thanks OP!! (edited)
