If you are cool with the shifter, this is all the bike 98% of cyclists need. Marketing, vanity, obsession on weight and so on are all the upgrades after this point. (edited)

I love a good old fashioned unsubstantiated claim on the internet.

This is a good starter bike.
I had one of these and it was great value.
Like others have mentioned, the gear change position is a little awkward as your hands are not able to reach it in a normal riding grip.
Also, it has 7 gears that are fine for flat and mild hills but anything more substantial will be tough or impossible.
Cheap option for someone that is a casual cyclist or wants a commuter that isn’t a folding bike maybe.

Always useful to visit bikebargains, it usually being the first source of decent deals.

My 1st road bike was similar to this at the same price and it was a great little bike really got me into cycling fitness & at the time triban was voted best value budget bike

The cheap Triban 3 was a decent bike, it still rarely surpassed for the price it was.

Decent price, ok the gear levers are prehistoric but for someone new to cycling they won't realise what they're missing with sti levers.

Heat! Not a bad price for a first bike or cheap runaround!

Amazing value for a first "proper" road/light Gravel bike. Decent components and frame and will last well. 32mm tyres will be great for commuting and UK potholes!

Not too sure about that to be honest......
I'd suggest that if this is definitely your budget, you'd be better off getting a less fashionable hybrid, but with better wheels and groupset. However if you can afford to spend a little more, there would be a pretty big step up for not much more cash outlay (and ultimately entice you more in to the wonderful world of cycling, rather than frighten you away!)

It should be mentioned that you will probably want to upgrade the saddle immediately...

I'd probably recommend upgrading the gears, cranks, wheels, frame, handlebars, fork, brakes (or just buy second hand...)

The gearing suffers the most, any type of climb and you'll be walking.
  10. LadyEleanor's avatar
Still overpriced. It is like having downtube gear levers.

Please could you share what road bikes are available with sti shifters at this price? (edited)
  11. OccasionalDeals's avatar
I don't think handlebar shifters are a good idea especially for someone less experienced at cycling. Frankly I think they're borderline dangerous and not something worth saving money on.

There's always the brand-x bike which is very basic but I'd take every time over this deal (especially for £10 more):

    Yep, potholes make them dangerous.

I think the merlin which I posted last week is much better value if you can stretch the budget

I have signed up to the 100 mile ride in London, I only have a Hybrid atm (Whyte - Cambridge). Can someone recommend a an affordable Road Bike?
    Thanks!
