Only ever had the 101 before. How does this compare?

I was fortunate enough to get some of this for about £25 a few years ago, it’s beautiful, much smoother than 101. One of my favourites

This is better with pepsi max, the 101 is better with cherry coke.

People have gotta stop trying to value whiskey on 'smoothness'. I'm sorry …People have gotta stop trying to value whiskey on 'smoothness'. I'm sorry to sound like an elitist, but real whiskey drinkers dont think 'smooth' is inherently a good thing, and you certainly aren't looking for 'smoothness' in a barrel proof bourbon. lol It's also kind of crazy to suggest that a higher proof version of literally the same whiskey(also high strength) is 'smoother'. I'm sorry to be harsh, but people who say stuff like this, to me, just show they dont really know what they're talking about. And it's fine to not be some whiskey connoisseur, but it's just not useful or accurate information. And that's why I'm saying this, because other people are reading and I want to give good consumer information. Like, yea, Rare Breed or its more traditional cousin 101 are more accessible than you'd think given the strength labels(and great to drink neat) and maybe aren't quite as 'challenging' as certain types of scotches, but they are still strong, mean bourbons. If I wanted smooth above all else, I'd drink something boring like Monkey Shoulder(not that there's anything wrong with that, Monkey Shoulder is almost magically smooth and easy to drink). If I wanted something with character, that bites but still tastes really good - I go with a nice bourbon like this. It's anything but smooth and demands small sips, but that's a big part of what makes it good.

The question was how it compared to 101, and you suggested a blended scotch. If you’d like something smoother than monkey shoulder you should try baileys

This is the same bourbon as 101 but a higher proof. Basically this is 101 before it's watered down. Regular Wild turkey is again the same watered down further. It's not just the same mashbill but the same whisky at a lower proof. As for subjective taste I prefer 101. Rare Breed is spikier, there is something to explore there but 101 is probably the best presentation of this whisky. We do love a cask strength whisky but even master distillers add water to their dram for a reason. Cask strength isn't always the best presentation of that whisky.

Depends on your definition of smooth. For me this isn’t rough therefore i think it’s smooth. If I wanted rough I’d get something different. It’s just booze.

This is just some gate-keeping statement of superiority. The person even said they’ve had several bottles of it. That’s enough to warrant them describing it how they found it to others, ‘smooth’ or otherwise.

And yet their advice was nonsensical and showed they had no idea what they were talking about.

I am not a fan of elitism/gatekeeping, but for a site that's based on giving consumer advice, I feel stuff like this needs to be called out. Anybody buying Rare Breed on the idea that it'd be a 'smooth' whiskey is going to get a slap in the face. And it just undersells what the whiskey is really all about in the first place. Wild Turkey is fantastic and probably my favorite whiskey ever, but I want people to know what they're getting into. If you value 'smoothness', a barrel strength Wild Turkey aint for you! If you want a strong, full flavored bourbon with a ton of character and body that will kick your butt if you take anything more than minor sips, then THIS is for you. (edited)

I bought several bottles a few years back for £25, I posted a deal for it. The best Wild Turkey. It’s great stuff but as found out it is lethal if you forget the alcoholic content, very smooth. Well worth it at this price.

I dont think it is (although don’t claim to be certain). Last I checked 101 was a blend of 5-8YO turkey and Rare breed is a blend of 6-12YO turkey.@

For me it’s not about drinking at cask strength (usualy ) but watering down pre bottling looses flavours compared to adding water to a cask strengthwhen drinking. Also like I said above I don’t think that’s the only difference between these two.

60% abv you'd need to add water as alcohol concentration above about 50% paralyses your taste buds.

But it's not smoother than 101. It's very much the opposite. It's literally the same whiskey, just a more potent version of it.

I was not 'suggesting' Monkey Shoulder. If that's what you got from my post, you didn't understand it at all.

It is smooth, aged longer in the barrel etc and easy to drink. High strength doesn’t equate to harshness. I’m not into “cherry, vanilla a touch of cocoa, pepper maybe some sultans with strong oak flavour” when describing alcohol. It’s nice or bad, smooth or harsh. I don’t drink whiskey or whisky just bourbon. The WT website even describes this as smooth…
