Just a word of caution:
The key is bound to your motherboard once activated. And will not allow for a change to a different motherboard model once installed. Keep this in mind. The reason price is lower. Great for laptops but if you have custom desktop then you will have to buy another once you upgrade your PC.

Not correct with a retail key, this can be linked to your MS account and used on different upgrades only an OEM key is linked to hardware.

To check if your windows key is legitimate / what type it is, open command prompt as an administrator (search "cmd" without quotes in start menu then right click run as administrator. Type slmgr /dli into it and then hit enter. A little pop up will then tell you the type of license. If it says VOLUME_MAK then not a legitimate license (can cause some minor issues but wont go into them as beyond scope of the post). If it says retail or oem then that is fine

As long as you've got W7 or W8 installed on a PC - you can still install W10 from a download and it will automatically activate with equivalent version. Microsoft have never stopped this upgrade feature.

Guys, can I give you all a word of advice?

All these companies offering super-cheap Office and Windows codes are all the same company. One of the first was this: keysworlds.com

They are Hong Kong based companies who pretend they are in the US and spend a lot of time on their online profile to make themselves look legitimate. And so many people keep falling for them.

These codes are the same as the $3 Asian codes you get on eBay. They are either keygen or volume licensed/used and the fact they activate doesn't make them 'legitimate'.

Why do we keep falling for these 'deals' and reporting them as such? I don't get it.

I agree it cost far too much in my opinion but you can’t fault how the machine and OS are working in harmony. I have both Linux Mint and my MacBook and would not go back to Microsoft Windows in a million years time. I am fine with their office products but that’s about it.

I bought a code off ebay for £4 recently and was completely scammed. Took way more time and effort (weeks) than it was worth to get my £4 back, but I did it out of principle.

I do not recommend buying ANYTHING digital via ebay.

I highly recommend not using any build of Windows 10 other than LTSB/LTSC. Microsoft has been hard at work embedding spyware into its OS at the deepest levels. They say this telemtry is for "improving customer experience" but provide no documentaion as to exactly what data is being collected.

The German Federal Office for Information Security or Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) have made a detailed report on telemtry in Windows 10 and how to disable known telemtry vectors in LTSB 1607 (the team is currently working on a report for 1809).

Read more about this project at the following link:
    bsi.bund.de/EN/…tml

TLDR: If you care about about privacy even a little bit, use LTSC/LTSB and close the holes using the linked documentation.
If you care a lot about privacy, don't use Windows at all, at least not for anything you actually want to be private.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, LTSB/LTSC receive security updates but feature updates (things that change OS functionality) are delayed in favour of stability. It installs with no windows store, Candy Crush or suggested apps adware nonsense in your start bar. It's clean, fast and allows the user to choose what software is installed/used. (edited)

That is the reason I have always used windows, what ever you need there is some software to fill that requirement. my first windows was 3.11 and I have pretty much been a windows user from that time, have tried Linux and MacOS and was not happy, even in the workplace I have never come across a company that uses anything other than windows. Don't think this is correct with a retail key, you can bind the key to your Microsoft account and reinstall on new hardware, OEM key yes but not retail, I have my cheap key bound to MS and have upgraded my PC 3 times with completely new hardware and just had to log in to my MS account to activate Windows.

    How do u do this?

Looks like the following still works:
    zdnet.com/art…de/

For those without Windows 7/8 already installed but have a product key, such as if replacing/upgrading the hard drive and want to install Windows 10 without first installing Windows 7/8, you can install W10 and when it asks for the product key say don't have one, the installation will complete, then go into settings and 'change product key' even though it will say none currently found, then enter the W7/8 product key and it should activate a digital licence of W10 without needing a W10 key. I recently did this with a couple of refurb PCs I bought that didn't have Windows installed but the W7 Pro stickers were present and the keys off those worked and activated fine for Windows 10 Pro using this approach.

The Internet runs on Linux so it's not more for home and private use.

macOS may have everything you need but what about everyone else? Maybe Windows has everything they need so they're happy to continue using it.
