Deal, so heat. But trust me bro, this is an outdated old dog of a phone. Do not buy.

    Ok dokey

Cheap for some decent specs. Not sure how optimised Android Go is but 2GB ram seems awfully scant though.

android go phones are usually 1GB from the likes of Nokia, so an improvement there

    Jeez all the negatives.

Android 12 Go will run fine on 2gb ram, there are phones out there running it on worse spec than this.

I'd have thought it will suit some just fine. Thinking of my 80 year old dad, that struggles to see the screen on his very basic, non smart, £20 phone. Even if he never uses any apps, the bigger, brighter screen is worth it?

Absolutely. And the OS is Android Go which was designed from the ground up to run with RAM as low as 1GB, no Xiaomi bloatware skin to be seen. Millions of Indians seem to be happy with this phone, check out YT.

You can optimize the OS for him by reducing the no of apps on each home screen, locking screen layouts so he doesn't inadvertently move icons around or 'lose' them etc.

With my 82 year old dad, I've also blocked installation of 3ed party apps - when I got him the phone, he used to install multiple rubbish apps by himself without realising it. I found out that whenever he sees a message like "Your phone is critically low on memory -click here to clean", he'd click onto some rubbish 3rd party app download link and install the rubbish app!
Getting him a smartphone changed his world- he's not very IT literate so not familiar with YT on a PC, and his hands are too weak to grip a tablet for long, but on the phone he spends hours watching 1950s songs and gardening videos on the family Indian YT I got for him (less than 2 quid a month for multiple accounts).
He also reads a lot of news articles via apps (PressReader is free through UK libraries,, hundreds of premium newspapers and magazines available).
Once you get him a smartphone, he'll start figuring it out slowly and believe me, he'll thank you for it. (edited)

I think a lot of people think this is running full android but it isn't it's actually using the cut down android go which was designed for 1gb phones. A lot of google apps on this phone is cut down too, you get things like youtube go, maps go, gmail go, etc obviously they have less features but they run ok

Only 2gb of ram blah blah blah , it's 2023 blah blah blah .

Spot on and you would be much better served buying a second hand phone on ebay with better specs for sixty pounds.

No matter the phone or the price, it's always "add more £ and get a better phone" 2GB is enough for your candy crash, it's not like you're rendering videos or playing RDR2

There’s a reason why ppl comment this. Nokia 2.2 we had was unusable. Only used WhatsApp and imo. Very slow initially and then a few months later even using basic swipe functions or opening the menu was horrendous. Phones are unable to run on low specs nowadays as is and everything uses more power and storage

2gb should be fine for Android 12 Go.

Wouldn't the refurbished Giffgaff Oppo A57S be a better option than this? Or does the "extended RAM" really make a difference to that 2GB RAM? (I realise I'm comparing new vs refurb, but I'm taking into account the 2 year guarantee on GiffGaff).

(Edited my original post as I realised the tone of it wasn't what I intended!) (edited)

Okay. I'd bet my 9 year old would get along with this swimmingly, texting his friends and watching the odd bit of youtube, so not total E-waste, unless you are a snob of course

They should stop making phones with 2gb ram
    Smoggy1970's avatar
    You'd better email Xiaomi then.

At least a 3GB of Ram when producing a new phone, don't mind paying £3-5 more for one extra ram. Makes a difference!

If you can scrape the money together I'd strongly recommend getting a better model. This is a great option otherwise
  20. cullies's avatar
much better option. extended Ram & expandable storage on this xiaomi doesn't mean much. Its a dud!

The Oppo was only released Aug 22 (edited)

you might want to post this. The Xiaomi 13 lite (with free airfryer) can be had for £336.26 with the same code LEBARA06 and £20 coupon. (edited)

Do phones with 2GB ram run an OS these days?

Guessing an older version of Android or Android Go only. (edited)
    Smoggy1970's avatar
Yes they do. That's why it has 2GB RAM.
  23. dealcatcherer's avatar
It's a fair call on the 2GB RAM, most apps are optimised for more so runs slow... Great phone it was when released, my mom had one.

What’s changed in the ~5 months since its release? (edited)

    Hey Switchy
Could you please advise on the best current Xiaomi phone around £300 - £350 both with and without expandable memory?
    Many thanks in advance buddy

The deal with Moto e13 from here seems to be a bit better because the Moto got 64gb internal. Just saying...

    Ive just had this delivered.
It cannot do the 'one thing' I wanted which is:

    Mutiple User Accounts/Profiles.

It was to be setup as an emergency phone - just to hold WhatsApp - with seperate profiles for a few family members

Does anyone know of a basic phone that provides 'Mutiple users'
Ive been up and down various forums and tried a few techniques - Enable Developer Mode, (MIUI DOWNLOADER etc) but have had no luck.

The price of the A2 was attractive - as the phone - hopefully never gets used
