sorted byMy name is Alex. I thought you'd caught me the other day. I couldn't turn the radio on for your lovely mum, because I was trying to get out of the back rapido.
She is a pro compared to my wife who actually argues with google home, I heard her shouting at it, it was hilarious.
Guess you don't own a mobile phone then?
My mate keeps calling his 'Alisha'
Exactly - and the thing is those skills when used keep earning you a small affiliate fee too so a win all around.
You could change the name to computer. I would imagine that your mum would think of it more like a computer than a person in that circumstance?
...and yet you post on an open forum?
Exactly this , every single bit of technology in the device is entirely around listening and processing those 4 words all other speech recognition is done by uploading the recording the main server where higher powered computers can do a far better job at speach recognition! (edited)
I'm going to create a thread on HUKD for the skill sharing. Think it's the best way because this thread is too difficult to find everyone interested and FB link didn't work for me.
Thread link. (edited)
Can you change the wake up name? I'm going to put a random German name like Hilgart or something haha
You can between 4 preselected options. Alexa, Echo, Amazon, or Computer.

Sadly yes....but amazon openly admit to eavesdropping...I'm just hoping the south Koreans cant understand me
Please enable and use it, and I will do the same for your skill, message me after you have done it with your skill name.
You can also enable it from here
amazon.co.uk/dp/…1-1
If you visit that link on your phone, it should automatically start up Alexa app or even allow you to enable the skill from the web browser (if you're logged into your Amazon account). (edited)
I have been meaning to learn how to develop an Alexa skill too and this offer just gives me an added incentive, thinking with Xmas around the corner to do something for the kids with Santa theme, if not anything, might be a fun thing for my 4 year old. And in the bargain if I end up bagging an echo dot for it, then that’s the cherry on top glad also that you found the post of some use
You have to put some hours in, but there are a few tutorials out there, developer.amazon.com/en-…ces for example.
If you know Python or Nodejs, it's pretty easy, JSON goes in and JSON comes out. Some good python example code at github.com/aws….py
Still voted hot.

I actually think I'm going to have a go tbh. If I don't get a freebie then I still learn something I guess.
Edit* Easiest way to create a skill blueprints.amazon.com/
You could even just copy 100 questions out of a few quiz books (edited)
Is she a switched on kid?
Doh - thats naughty - why won't they say something like Free Echo Dot or Echo Show For Developing Alexa Skill or some such. I am pretty sure folks will land here, see the discussion, get annoyed and vote cold thinking its my fault

Thank you for your message. We understand you have a question about your participation in the marketing promotion for European developers.
We are glad to confirm receipt of your online application for this campaign on Oct 20.
As your skill XXXXXXX was published a few hours ago on our store, kindly allow up to 60 days in order to receive the prize for achieving this milestone.
Thanks for all your interest in Alexa.
So I am going to assume all is well and I should have a shiny echo dot sorted sooner rather then later
And this is the attitude that separates you from the whinging "10p off a bag of Iceland chips" masses on this site. Hats off to you Sir. Best of luck. (edited)
Thanks for your reply bud.
But you may as well have written that in chinese tbh as I'm new to any coding language.
I did watch all Mr robot though that's got to count for something lol...
I'm guessing I'm wanting to do more than i should be at the start. Just didn't want to just submit same ole sh*t for a reward. And now I'm not interested in the freebies anyway. I'll take my time and see what resources I can come across that help me do what I want.
Thanks again.
And while replying to you I got the golden vampire flamedeer and won a £10 amazon voucher so thanks again. (edited)
Download the alexa app onto ur phone.
heres mine. much appreciated if everyone gives it a go.

Ah man I thought you could have any name lol
It wouldn't work out as I think they train every wake word with loads of different people with different accents - also the wake word processing is handled offline. If any word could be used then I'd imagine it would affect user experience as Alexa would be less capable of being woken.
