Depends again. You can find a cheaper laptop, but some want a premium, well built laptop, with great ergonomics, aspect ratio, screen resolution, ir camera for facial login etc etc.
I don't think that is really true any more:
Microsoft teams up with iFixit to bring official repairability tools to independent repairers | Windows Central (edited)
Personally for me a Windows machine needs a bit more RAM and SDD. But for a decent home laptop for general home stuff, this is a great buy. (edited)
amd.com/en/…ion
Combine that with the good build quality and great screen, and this will be a great device for people who use cloud-storage, or dont want / need to save anything locally.
Be aware, these are all-but impossible to repair though, so have it insured or dont break it!
Making these devices more repairable is admirable; but a number of companies are announcing this stuff just for PR rather than doing anything meaningful. Ive tried to repair various Surface devices in the past, and almost destroyed them trying to get in before giving up.
I would love to be proven wrong on this, but looking at the link you posted, the only part that this particular Surface Laptop 4 is listed as allowing is the battery cover. However, i'd rather lose this argument and customers have a more accessible/repairable laptop.... (edited)
How to change the SSD on the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 in easy steps (xda-developers.com)
Yes, depending on the person using the laptop.
Nope.
Thankfully it is upgradeable.
My laptop arrived and it seems very nice. All upgraded to Windows 11.
I've ordered a 1tb ssd from Dell. Paid £174. Got to wait till Feb for delivery though.
Dell M.2 PCIe NVMe Gen 3x4 Class 35 2230 Solid State Drive - 1TB | Dell UK
No, but it works with any Microsoft pen (or your finger)
Very easy to upgrade the SSD in these laptops - I then bought a cheap USB adapter /enclosure for my old 128GB drive and have ended up saving even more (You would pay way over the odds if you didn;t do the upgrade yourself, or if you bought a larger SSD on day 1 - ridiculous I know, but that is thee world we live in) (edited)
Sort of. I think if your ssd storage needs are that basic, you’d get away with a much cheaper laptop.
And if you’re all about the cloud storage, better off with a chromebook.
No
Exactly! I've had my SL2 for 2 years and am now up to 90Gb of storage use. I don't want a cheap laptop (or Chromebook!) with poor screen/keyboard/touchpad/performance/form factor so I'm happy with 128Gb.
That said, I do think it's bad that they can't run to 256Gb for a little more (currently £879 at JL ffs)
Not all CBs are made equal...you forgot in cons list, they usually top out at 128gb. This is a cracking deal, gorgeous thing...peer MBA is roughly £260 more on Amazon (edited)
The SSD is upgradable, but it doesn't look particularly easy from the YouTube videos I've seen, especially compared to products like Lenovo's Legion laptops.
Also, MS are using m.2 2230 SSDs, which are quite a lot more expensive than the usual 'normal' nvme drives.
I have done it and found it pretty easy - granted, not as easy as the Surface Pro X (which has a dedicated opening on the back!)
Where did you aqcuire the SSD if you don't mind me asking? they don't seem widely available.
I got mine of EBAY: m.2 2230 ssd. | eBay (edited)
Thanks - tempting. And this (ebay.co.uk/itm…9Io) kind of proves my point about the price gouging - it's £34 for 256Gb!!!
But the comparison of interest most is probably the cost of a DIY upgrade compared to the extra cost of buying it with the extra gb included at purchase time?
Yeah, that’s my concern about an ‘easy’ upgrade. Eg, the ssd isn’t widely available or competitively priced, and opening up the machine is challenging.
You definitely should not try it if you don't have even a basic level of tech. diy skills - but even my Mum could do this upgrade I reckon :-)
Worth noting that you should be able to double the memory on this laptop for around £30 and a little diy (edited)
I don't really feel that I've not got the skills I've upgraded ram and ssd on several Legion 5 laptops. Looking at videos of the Surface Laptop, it looks easy to damage the rubber feet, getting to the screws, then maybe damaging the chassis prising it apart, and then you've got to be quite careful with the connecting trackpad/keyboard ribbon cable. After that, the SSD has to be removed from a plastic holder stuck with thermal paste.
And 256gb isn't enough either. 512gb would be what I'm after, and that seems to be costly compared to a standard 1TB M2 nvme drive.
Not trying to be unduly negative. Just pointing out that the upgrade isn't all that easy or cost effective, as you suggest.
When you changed the ssd, did you get the rubber feet off without damaging them, or were they glued on? Eg, did they go back on properly? (edited)
Yes, but I did follow the guidance on youtube from someone who had already done it. (Front and Rear rubber feet are slightly different - check YouTube for the info)
The deal that keeps giving! Happy Christmas!
