Just bought one an EO mini pro 2, £297 tethered from onbuy but hotukdeals wouldn't let me post it.
Had it installed for £260 from a local electrician. Bargain!

Works out at over two quid an hour on the electricity bill to charge something at 7.4kw, just saying. Modern fuse boxes are not that easy for DIYers, BTW and 30A ain't something to take lightly. Interesting to see what would happen if you used the electric cooker full-on, had an electric shower and charged the car at the same time...

If you have an EV, you should really be on Octopus Go for cheap overnight rates; I'm still paying 5p/kWh between 00:30 and 04:30 for charging and whatever else in the house eg dishwasher.

I have a old consumer unit board - no RCB and at maximum number of ways, reading the fitting - sounds like they put a new 3 way in - anyone know if this would connect to it?

They'll just tail off mains into a new mini board expertelectrical.co.uk/fus…ers

I had this at old house when I got a freebie installed back in the day.

Hi to those who have installed their own, partially or fully. I have done the calculations and reckon I can "get away" with 3 core 2.5mm^2 SWA over a 10m run for this circuit (32A). Does that sound right (single phase, 5% voltage drop)?

6mm^2 SWA is what I’d use.

Getting along fine with granny charger on Octopus Go for 4 hours every night otherwise I'd buy this and install myself.

At risk of receiving the ‘wrath’ from electricians on here, I installed my own 7KW Zappi charger back in the summer. It wasn’t difficult, however I did do a load of research beforehand, made sure I was ultra safe by literally killing the main switch on the house consumer unit before connecting anything, & have had plenty of help around basic electrical work before, so was confident in my ability. I’d done the supply / mcb requirement calculations beforehand because mine was just under a 50m run of SWA cable out to my garage with cable clipped around the house and surrounding wall’s to the garage. This then entered a separate consumer unit with another mcb supplying power to my Zappi. So I have mcb protection for the supply to my garage consumer & then additional mcb to the Zappi. CT clamps monitor the supply (as mentioned by another member here) & throttle back depending on the house usage.
Checked & triple checked connections before going live. All works perfectly. Cable cost me £178 & cleats £8. Shorter run would’ve been much cheaper and quicker. I suppose my point being £449 or above for a fairly short run seems quite high for what should take an electrician maybe an hours work.

Getting it working is easy. Legality is another matter.

The Zappi does have DC RCD built in but some other chargers do not. Just mentioning for the sake of others that might read your post barrel on with only an MCB. Similarly, other chargers may require consideration of PEN fault protection.

Note I'm not saying DIYer can't do a safe job or that I agree with the law. Just pointing out that getting it working doesn't mean it's safe or legal

Same here... But I removed mine.
Mine was a shorter run and no swa required as I ran through the house under floorboards.
I only removed it because I didn't get enough use out of it so I returned within 2 weeks.
I had the ohme charger with the commando plug from octopus.
Cost me £200 from octopus plus about 5 metres of 6mm² cable.
I didn't want to say earlier because there are too many people in here who think the world would stop turning if they stopped turning terminals (edited)

I think the Installation option is actually a better deal.

It's only £449 fixed price for installation which is a great deal depending on where you're getting the charger installed and how far away it is from your consumer unit.

It's not too bad, but note that the price of installation goes up by £200 on 26 November so get in there quick if you're considering it!

Problem is we dont have drive way so i left it that

Probably best to get an untethered charger, then, unless you pretty much know what car and connection you'll need in the future.

Installation is definitely not a DIY job, as you need certification for your house insurance or permission from your landlord if renting.
Also, before you book an installer ask them to inspect the site... Ours turned up unable to work above head height (seriously) so going over a door was out of the question... Plus he was only 'allowed' to use 15m of cable !
After the circus had left, I researched the qualifications required to fit these things..... Five WEEKS from scratch and that includes becoming an "electrician" !
    No wonder they send monkeys.

I just got a quote from my local sparky and he said about £200 labour plus cost of cable (7-8m at £8 per meter). So £449 seems on the steep side.

Amazon will be taking.a cut if that 449 , so will the people organising it too

I’m after a zappi for the proper integration with solar, but this is so much cheaper and neater…and apparently works with Solar if you get the power meter with it..anyone have any experience with it?

I’ve just got an employee offer for the Ohme charger £899 and a £100 Amazon voucher. This charger unlocks the Octopus Intelligent tariff, 10p for 6 hours a night. This deal looks good but the Ohme works out better long term for me as I have home battery storage. (edited)

Where did you see the offer for 10p off peak charging? I need to change energy supplier

So Wallbox have a 15% off blackfriday sale on their website...Amazon is still way cheaper though!! The installation service through Amazon looks like it's dependent on location. Seems you could buy just the install service on the Wallbox site though.

Liking the compact look of this charger....Leaning towards Hypervolt though since they do a 10m tethered cable. Getting installs moving with these things is proving to be difficult.

For anyone that has an EV charger...is it hooked up to a new MCB in your consumer unit, or is the main cable tailed off into a mini CU? I have a free slot on the CU, so guessing they'd bang a new 32A MCB in their and run some 6mm SWA to the charger?! (edited)
    Why_so_serious's avatar
    Why_so_serious
Depends if you have space in your CU for the cables.
Also you must have capacity on the rcd.
Installers generally don't like touching existing writing so they keep their own work separate including standalone Consumer unit. (edited)

I've just ordered a Tethered Zappi off eBay brand new for £630.

I will fit it myself too so get the electrical police on standby

Oh, that's tempting....I've just accepted a quote on a Zappi for £1100 fitted. £800 for the unit and £300 labour, which I thought wasn't too bad considering the cost of the cable. I bet they are paying nearer this price though and I'm actually being charged like £470 for the install....hmmm

In saying that, another local spark wanted £1400 to fit...seems excessive. (edited)

Black Wallbox back up in price, white still available

On another note, anyone have an opinion on whether this is any better than a PodPoint Solo 3? I can get a 7kW tethered PPS3 plus installation for about £100 less than this Wallbox and was wondering whether to go for that instead...

Theyre all much of a muchness so long as they have app control.

If you have solar or looking at getting solar then I'd recommend one that will divert excess solar to the charger using CT clamps.

    Zappi, Simpson, Anderson etc.

£363 at onbuy but I have not used the retailer before so can't vouch for them.
