  • any Britons are putting off simple and easy medical checks, with 70% of men and two thirds of women (67%) saying they DON’T attend a routine health check at least once a year
  • Research comes amid warnings from the British Heart Foundation that up to five million could be living with undiagnosed high blood pressure in the UK – with a new survey from Tesco revealing 1 in 10 men have never had a blood pressure check
  • Tesco to offer thousands of free blood pressure checks this Heart Month at community pharmacies across the UK as its research shows 7 in 10 say that supporting the health of their loved ones is one of their top priorities

A leading charity partnership is urging more people to encourage their loved ones to take up a free blood pressure check this Valentine’s Day as new figures reveal millions are struggling to prioritise their health during the cost-of-living crisis.

New research released today by Tesco shows that Britons are more likely to service their cars (64%) and household boilers (58%) each year than attend a routine medical examination (31%), with 1 in 2 (50%) more likely to prioritise the health of their loved ones over their own health.

Amid these warning signs, Tesco is working with BHF to encourage more people to routinely check their blood pressure, for free, at the supermarket’s network of in-store pharmacies, with almost half a million appointments available this year at Tesco pharmacies across the UK. Based on NHS analysis, these appointments could help detect tens of thousands of cases of high blood pressure and prevent hundreds of cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes.

"Many are deprioritising routine health checks" - more like the NHS is on its knees and people can't get to see a doctor for love nor money so don't even have the chance to discuss their routine health.

How many people have genuine health concerns but can't even get through to the surgery to tell someone about it because they call at 8.00am, are caller number 87 in the queue and then the line goes dead because all appointments available have been allocated? Game over, try again tomorrow.

It's absolutely criminal what's happening at the moment. Definitely raising my blood pressure! Will have to pop to Tesco to get it checked.

    Cheers Rishi et al!

Have you seen all the adverts on TV for private health insurance and all the private hospitals. There was one I saw the other day offering 24 hour gp appointments. What gp's are they using, probably ours paid more at a private rate. It's the beginning of the end of the nhs, unless we can stop them.

It's disgusting what they have deliberately done to it. Their digging their heels in on negotiating, blaming the unions (saying their making services unsafe and not the years of underfunding and staff shortages) and refusing to budge on the pay award recommendation that's from last year and out of date. There also saying any more money will have to come from funding for nhs services. There trying to turn public opinion against the unions and all the striking workers. The rich, pampered, selfish, incompetent, lying, stealing bunch of immortal, unethical fraudsters. Lock them up!

This year, and its been just 5 weeks so far 350 pharmacy closures have been announced.
Everything gets referred to 'the pharmacist'

Aint going to be many around to see at this rate.

    Shame

This is not a deal...pharmacies will also give you a free BP check if you ask for it
Also if you're aged over 40 then the pharmacy probably gets paid by NHS for the BP check

Chemists already do this for free. What are they going to do with the info?
    Wali_S's avatar
    Wali_S
Nothing , they just claim it and get paid for running the service. If your BP is high it gets reffered to the gp ( with your permission).

Valentines day is a very bad day to check blood pressure, stakes are very high on that day so obviously pressure would be higher

On a side note, its good to check blood pressure regularly (edited)

Tesco being altruistic and helping to diagnose potential health problems in advance by offering this service? Perhaps they can advance the cause for improved health and preventative remedies by introducing simpler food labelling that warns you about what you're putting into your bodies like salt level intake which might be more useful to know before your blood pressure does go through the roof.
