I use smarty unlimited SIM £15 a month in a 5G router( Huawei 5G CPE pro 2), in an area that apparently doesn't get 5G signal. Couldn't be happier. Gets full 5G signal, minimum download speeds of 400mbps, goes up to around 8-900mbps with the window open. Upload speeds minimum 50mbps.

Ping is always less than 40ms, absolutely perfect for gaming with no lags or connection issues and obviously great for streaming, browsing etc.

I'd expect this deal to have better speeds seeing as the router would be an upgrade in my case. A bonus to using 3 direct would be the capability of having proper port forwarding as well which smarty can't utilise unfortunately.

Was tempted to go for this offer previously but didn't want to be tied into a contract.

I'd say go for it and have a mess about in the cooling off period to see if you want to keep it, if not return it.

I band lock my router so it doesn't bounce off slower cell towers so in the near 2 years of having it up and running, there have been no issues.

Be careful of trying to cancel in the 30-day trial period, Three will do everything to block you. Many posts on HUKD about this. Awful company to deal with.

If you have a good 5G signal from Three where you live it should be fine as long as you place it on a windowsill that’s closest to the cell tower.

I think a lot of the complaints are due to the fact that mobile broadband is variable by nature. Don’t buy this if you want consistent speeds. All kinds of variables like the time of day, congestion on the network, even weather conditions will affect the speeds. But if it lets you order at your address it should always be a usable speed at least.

Also if you are an online gamer don’t bother. You’ll have a higher latency and less stability than a fixed line fiber connection - But this is still totally fine for things like web browsing, streaming videos, and downloading files.

If you find it’s not for you. Just cancel in the cooling off period. The first 14 days are nice and easy to get out of. 30 day satisfaction guarantee is more of a hassle.

Regret getting this last year. Wifi quality not equal in all rooms, never had an issue before with bt wifi all round house

Could try using your own router plugged into the back of this as just a modem? Or even a mesh system if your house is larger.

BT have had some pretty good routers in recent years especially. It’s not surprising that you’re finding other free ISP provided routers aren’t as good as BT - Most other companies aren’t either.

Also, since you got it last year do you definitely have the router that’s pictured in this deal? Or do you have the earlier ZTE one that’s a different shape? That one has worse WiFi than this does.

I Know we usually have people posting in these threads asking about buying their own 5G Routers to use with a Smarty SIM for less... So the best deal I found at the moment is this:
    Three ZTE MC801A (5G) - Grade A Boxed with 6 Month warranty - £119.99 With free delivery

    Any next best ?

    Thank you Kodabear

And which SIM card they use with

Just check - upon discontinuing contract with Three

The included router package must be returned to Three

Therefore I am considering this too.

I returned mine after a week. If you use the Internet sporadically and can cope with signal quality being up and down fine however if you want stability then I can't recommend it. My nearest Three 5G mast is 0.5 miles away, line of sight. (edited)

Exactly my experience. Although I didn't use it past speed tests. Limiting to 150mbps when I am a stone throw away. Even less than 0.5miles. there's just a road ans about 10 houses in the way but open view of the tower

Do not get this. I live a stone's throw away from the Hutchinson's mast so I get fantastic coverage and speed on my iD mobile (piggy backs 3). I get around 450-600mbps. But when I got this broadband deal it is limited to 150mbps. So no matter what you do, it won't go higher. Effectively they are selling you a better router than a modem. I took the 3 simcard out and put it in my 5g phone, what dya know, 450-600mbps. Tethering this gives me 150mbps so I don't see why I should be paying more. I cancelled the deal and returned the device.

    DONT GET THIS!
I have this 5G system from 3. The speed is ok, but that signal randomly drops out 3 to 5 times a day! It usually takes between 15 to 30 mins to recover on its own. Restarting the router on its own will 'fix' it, but it's a massive pain.

I've contacted 3 and they are playing dumb on the whole thing. There are multiple forum and Reddit posts of people experiencing the same thing. Just avoid this as it's more hassle than it's worth.

I have similar with mine. Initially it was dropping out roughly every hour but I did a search online and managed to find instructions to change some of the settings on a forum. Now it is similar to yours and only drops out once or twice a day which is fine for me. For the price and convenience of it being wireless I can live with resetting it once a day.

Don't bother. I tried it - can consistently get 250-300 MBps on my phone (also on Three). When connected to the router I mostly got below 40, sometimes down to 10. I had the router facing the mast, which I could see out my window 300-400m away (across an empty park). Don't understand why it's so slow. Tech team didn't fix it, and failed to call me back.

Recently got the 30 day plan to supplement my 50mbps BT connection until FTTP is finally opened up to my area. I have a somewhat advanced network setup - including load balancing / failover of connections between the BT and this router.

Very impressed with the speeds. I have put the 3 5G router in the loft facing the 5G tower (around 500m away) with a CAT6 cable back to my existing Mikrotik router.
Yes the speed do vary - but never seen it drop below 200mbps at any point.

Also be careful if you take it out, it says you can return to store but they refused to do it and trying to get it cancelled took some time due to very poor customer services, we had to call a few times and keep chasing them up

Unless you know for sure that you have VERY strong Three 5g signal within your home I wouldn't bother with this. I was with Three for years and as technology improved Three's service got worse, moved to EE and works a treat when needed (I only use it as a backup broadband solution)

Been using it for the past week and quite impressed. I don't get the same speed as some of you but 300 ish is still decent for the price IMO and it's been rock solid.

I went ahead and put the 30 day notice in to Vodafone this morning and will stick with 3 5g for now. I was out of contract with them and paying £35 for just 48mbps so this saves me a few quid and also not get locked into a new contract waiting for full fibre to reach my place.

Good bit of kit. Live in a one bar 5G area but still comfortably sit between 60Mbps and 200Mbps. Highest seen was 400Mbps. I generate a new speedtest hourly which is graphed as i'm a little sceptical of it long run. Very consistent service so far, much better than can be said for BT - Spent 3 months at 51Mbps, below their 'stay fast guarantee'. My complaint only led from them increasing my price to £60p/m, so it was goodbye from me.

My setup uses this as a modem with IP passthrough enabled, this fronts an ASUS AIMesh system consisting of a number of RT AC86Us. Works a treat and (for me) was only £10 p/m.

I moved from fibre BB to this 5G from Three. The max speed I can get from fibre was 55mb. This Three gives me between 100-150mb. It is been reliable and I am on a 1 month contract to test before committing for longer. Ping is sometimes slow though. Not always. It doesn't not affect me much but might be a problem for some.

We are in a 5G area according to Three. I have managed to get 5G only once, despite taking an extension cable outside and putting the router in high points in the surrounding area.

EE's coverage checker by comparison is a LOT better...with full 5G available as stated it would be (inside and outside). What's interesting is that this router when on 4G+ is significantly slower than an iPhone 13 on the same 4G+ network.

Basically, we found this hub to be totally unusable, which is a great shame given that it's very cost effective. If it works for you, then great

If you go for this, make sure your 5G coverage is real. According to their coverage checker I should have been able to get 5G at home (I repeatedly asked their sales rep while placing my order) but I didn't and had to send it back. Their support team also acknowledged that my area was not fully covered, which is v annoying... Also I am trying to get a refund since early March for the first month I paid in advance and still nothing...

The helpdesk is useless and patronising to say the least. I was there when they installed the mast, clearly states Hutchinson on it. Which means it belongs to three. I get upto 600mbps on my 5g phone. Yet they said maybe you're not in a coverage area.

I have had this for 3 weeks now - replacing Virgin M125 package. I only get 4G with this (I knew this when I committed to the deal) and get down load speeds in the range 50-80mbps. Have set it up to use my own router and can say I've not noticed any difference from when with Virgin - watch netflix/paramount etc every night and not had a single problem.

I signed up when there was £80 Quidco cashback with an additional cashback bonus of £50 - it has all tracked and if it pays, combined with the 3 month free this will average out at £12.08/month for the 2 year contract.

All depends upon what the 3 service is like in your area.

I have this, and once set up it's actually rather good.
Spent an hour or so slowly moving it around in a spare room at different angles and looking at the fluctuations in the signal to find the best spot. When it's really pissing it down with rain it does slow down a bit but this is infrequent.
I game online (COD etc), ping is fine for me at around 30ms (i'm an old gamer though from Doom/Quake days and 56k modems so compensation is something that can't be taught!), down/up speed wise I get about 400mb/30, the mast is about a mile away from the house, maybe a little more.

I was having problems of it completely dropping out for about 10 minutes about 2-3 times a day a few months ago but this seems to have gone since i've positioned it better, I thought it was firmware related but it's not been updated since then so it coulnd't have been.

I'm happy with a rolling contract for £24 so if anything comes in the meantime I can switch. Just had CityFibre dig up the streets a few weeks ago so keeping an eye on that.

I use a Three sim in an area that only used to get 4G and speeds were pretty consistent - d/l around 50-70 depending on weather. Then they implemented 5G and 4G+ on the mast I connect to, but I get a weak signal, and it cut my d/l speed to around 10. I can limit the router to 4G only, but there's no way to stop it choosing 4G+ - which it invariably does., giving me a slow connection.

The only way to make it connect to 4G only is to move the router to a position where signal is not as good - which I've had to do. Now I'm getting d/l speeds of 30-40.

They said 5G was the future - but it's not if you're too far away to get a good signal, but close enough that it chooses 5G over 4G. It'll choose 5G or 4G+ at 1 bar signal strength, over 4G at 4 bars!

My closest 5g capable cell tower is 2.2 miles away, no direct line of sight, 4g only tower is less than half a mile away, I can lock my router onto the 5g tower without any issue.

If I don't lock on to the 5g tower then I get horrendous 4g+ speeds like you're experiencing. I figured this out the first day or two I got set up, that was almost 2 years ago. Haven't had an issue since. I suggest you look into band locking to help your speeds out.

I have the older version of this router and have a year or so left on my contract. I can't fault it at all. I get 500+ down and 350+ up on 90% of the speed tests I run. About once every 3 months I lose 5G signal for anywhere between 2-48 hours but the 4g speeds are 150+ down and 50+ up so doesn't really affect me. In order to get a good signal I have to put the router on the window sill on the front side of my house. Anywhere else and the speeds aren't as good but still acceptable. Only downside of having it at the front of the house is poor signal in the back garden. But it covers the entire house and even reaches to my garage. Definitely depends on the quality of the device you're using. All my devices that are less than 5 years old connect to it easily from anywhere in the house. My old computer and laptop struggle to connect so I have to tether to the router using my phone as a daisy chain. My Brother lives a couple of miles away and he has one. His speeds are even better than mine. My parents also live a couple of miles away and they have one too. Theirs is the worst speed out of all of us but still over 300 down and 100 up which is plenty for them. Officially 5G isn't supported in my area but mine worked from day one. Same for my brother. My parents had to wait 2-3 months before they started getting 5G but the 4G speeds were plenty fast enough in the interim. Personally I can't recommend them enough. I travel a lot for work and I've never had any issues with signals on Three. I switched to EE recently as I get a 50% discount with them and I regret it. I never ever had signal issues inside petrol stations or shops or when I was out in the sticks with Three but with EE I'm constantly having to step outside or go near a window to get a signal so I can load my loyalty card app in the supermarket or at the petrol station.

I've had this for about 6 months. Initially came up as having 5g in my area when I ordered but it doesn't really, if you go on their site now it says 4g only in my area.
Gives a fairly consistent 100mb download speed on 4g which is faster than I'll ever need and way better than I can get on a wired connection.
Quidco cashback recently came through for me too.
Main issue is the connection seems to drop out once or twice a day but comes back as soon as you reset the router

I was with three homefi for a few years and was very happy with speed and signal strength. I got around 37 mbps for about two years but then the speed suddenly droped to between 2.5mbps and 4mbps with made so many things very difficult and at times near on impossible. I contacted 3 a number of times and all they did is give a discount on the next bill, but the problem was never resolved. One call before I cancelled the three customer service rep looked and said it is because the engineers are working to install 5g in the area and disabled the main mast so all signals are going to a secondary mast which as a result was overloaded. He could not give a time when it would be fixed. But I gave them yet another month but still no better. I called up to cancel and the woman I spoke to tried to get me to stay with them by saying they would send me a new router! When I asked her what a new router would solve when it was actually a network problem she couldn't provide an answer. The main thing I never understood was the fact that I used "smarty" on my phone which piggy back on the three network and smarty was much faster then three broadband (homefi) was
    johnat107's avatar
    johnat107
Hard to understand why you had the difference between 3 and Smarty. I had 12 months using a 3 SIM without a problem and good speeds. I find that Smarty which I've been using for 2 months gives exactly the same speeds and reliability. You can get totally different speeds using things like firesticks and other Android devices because my shield and Meecool km6 deluxe have WiFi 6 Lan ports but older 4k firesticks have slower WiFi and Lan. I could have had the recent 264mb Virgin £18.40 offer but that's much slower and also more expensive than this latest 3 offering. (edited)
