Your mother is supposed to be that one constant in your life you can rely on time and time again.

After all, mothers love their children unconditionally, and there’s nothing a mother can’t forgive.

So what happens when you’re deprived of that emotional support?

Going through life with a narcissistic mother is traumatizing. You’re constantly put down, critiqued, and encouraged to be hard on yourself.

If the one person who’s supposed to love you no matter what doesn’t like you… then who will?

Such intrusive thoughts can create irreparable emotional and psychological damage.

The best person to walk you through the process is someone who’s been in your shoes.

That’s right – you are not alone, and your mother is certainly not the only example of a bad, unsupportive parent.

Jokes aside, these kinds of people - or ones with Narcissistic traits - can be extremely damaging to one's overall wellbeing, which could last decades or even the rest of one's life.
The 'covert' ones are even worse, as you don't see them coming until it is too late.
Both men & women can be narcissists or have the traits, men more so & more common in them but women can be more dangerous with the covert/vulnerable type.
Believe it or not, there's also a type known as a 'kind' narcissist - this example features a male narc being this way psychologytoday.com/gb/…ist
Hopefully this book highlights some of their overall overt/underhand horribleness to keep you safe from them.
If you are unfortunate to meet one, simply run a million miles - you may have to do it quickly or gradually depending on how close you've become enmeshed with them & how safe it is for you to do so.
They never change no matter how good, caring or loving you are to them or how much they promise they will change. In fact the more you accede to their controlling & manipulative demands & wishes, the worse they get & feel they can get away with anything.
In short, a neverending cycle of abuse - not worth a second of your life, if you can help it. If you can't, seek help as soon as it is safe to do so with professional people/organisations who know about them & their deceitful ways.

P.S. Narcissism is on a spectrum - some are more narcissistic than others. Here's a balanced article, which looks at healthy narcissism as well... Narcissistic Traits: Beyond a Sense of Superiority psychcentral.com/dis…its

So true... I was naive enough to start a family with someone like that. Let's just say it has been the most difficult 6 years of my life since our separation, albeit with many beautiful times throughout. Learn the traits and signs and stay away. The most important point you made is that they never change. You can literally waste an entire lifetime trying to change somebody, or waste an entire lifetime dealing with the behaviour and manipulation. Neither choice is worth it! (edited)

Narcs don't know they're narcs... and if this book is about mothers.. I just hope 🙏🏽 that we can treat them with empathy despite their flaws since they didn't or don't know any better.. and we are alive to tell the tale.. (edited)

Have you any experience of one yourself?
That's a myth that we keep telling ourselves in the hope they will change.
They are on a spectrum though, so not all are horrible all of the time.
We all have narcissistic traits to some extent, nobody's perfect all the time & it's ok to have healthy ones psychcentral.com/dis…its

I've just had a skim through it, and it's pretty good. Matches with things I've seen in people in my family who are narcissists, and she includes references to research, which is a good sign, and the advice seems like it'd be helpful.

    Recommended.

Far from it, both men & women 'covert' narcs can be worse - they show the world a different side that everyone thinks is lovely, charming & 'normal', one can not imagine the damage they inflict behind closed doors though. (edited)
