I think it's really tough being a java dev. This will not make you a java dev and is misleading.

You need a natural aptitude for software development, a lot of experience, genuine passion for software development, and lots of peripheral knowledge to even start. Peripheral knowledge such as software theory (data structures, security), cloud platform stuff, patterns of doing stuff, other peripheral languages such as sql, bash scripting, python, js. Also need knowledge of business/project stuff like agile.

My recommendation is get a bachelor degree in computer science and then try it as a junior for a year or so before even considering.

If that seems too much don't bother you'll struggle in the job if you get one and won't enjoy it.

Hardest part about being a Java dev is remembering all the boilerplate

Getting a Bachelors to give a certain career path a go is a very expensive experiment both fiscally and time wise... Whilst I agree you can't become a good software engineer from just a book, learning how a language works then challenging yourself with building X or Y, is certainly a good approach to see if you like it before making any bigger commitments like either university, a bootcamp or even an apprenticeship (If I went back I'd probably choose the latter but university has landed me an incredible role at a company I love admittedly)

As a software engineer since 2006 id advise people to be cautious getting into this industry in 2023 as sadly a lot of the big companies are outsourcing the work now.

As a software engineer since god even knows when, I disagree. Yes, the job market is not as amazing as it was a while ago, but it's still much much better than most others and there are still a huge amount of companies looking to hire at all levels. If you're interested in trying it, go for it. Just know that you need A LOT of dedication to make it work. (edited)
