sorted byYou need a natural aptitude for software development, a lot of experience, genuine passion for software development, and lots of peripheral knowledge to even start. Peripheral knowledge such as software theory (data structures, security), cloud platform stuff, patterns of doing stuff, other peripheral languages such as sql, bash scripting, python, js. Also need knowledge of business/project stuff like agile.
My recommendation is get a bachelor degree in computer science and then try it as a junior for a year or so before even considering.
If that seems too much don't bother you'll struggle in the job if you get one and won't enjoy it.
Getting a Bachelors to give a certain career path a go is a very expensive experiment both fiscally and time wise... Whilst I agree you can't become a good software engineer from just a book, learning how a language works then challenging yourself with building X or Y, is certainly a good approach to see if you like it before making any bigger commitments like either university, a bootcamp or even an apprenticeship (If I went back I'd probably choose the latter but university has landed me an incredible role at a company I love admittedly)
