I had a C64 when I was 10-12 years old. Absolutely loved it.

I bought one of these on the most recent offer with much excitement.

However I played with it for half an hour and returned to Amazon. Reasons:

    1) Joystick was absolutely terrible for me. Even in simple slow paced games I struggled to properly control the game (it’s exactly the style of joystick I hated and never used back in the late 80s / earlier 90s). I did use another USB pad but the response didn’t feel great with that.

    2) Good games were… rubbish. Games I had a great nostalgia for just weren’t that great, graphics are a lot worse than my rose-tinted spectacles tell me!

    3) A lot of the included games are rubbish anyway.

So despite only being £25 I found it to be a poor item, and that is coming from someone whose first computing experience was the C64.

That's why I've stayed away from this sort of thing - I don't want to taint my memories

Can these be hacked to play more games?
    Kurt_Constable's avatar
Don't need to hack. They are setup to allow more games from a usb stick to be added.

For those wondering about adding more games through hacking / modding. You can easily, you just need a USB stick to store the extra games.

Either update the stock firmware -
    retrogames.biz/sup…de/

or better still, use a bespoke firmware -
    thec64community.online/thr…usb

The bespoke one let's you add games to the carousel, to make it a bit more fancy.

I enjoyed that uncomplicated period of my life, walking up to the local store and spending my pocket money on cheap Codemaster games that cost £2 or £3

While I have fond memories I have only used my C64 a few times since I upgraded to an Amiga so I don't think I would give it much use

Wow, I had one of these and its predecessor, a Vic 20. Might just have to for old times sake.

I had the vic 20 and c64 too.The graphics on the c64 seemed great compared to the Vic.Mind you at that young age I enjoyed playing radar Rat Race on a cartridge on the Vic it was exciting being my first computer.

One of the best things for collecting dust on a shelf that anyone can buy.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo true!, got 3x and all are in box collecting dust but make lovely ornaments. We are spoilt by modern games, some things are better off remembered then re-experienced.

    Kickstart
    Jet Set Willy
    Dummy Run
    Daley Thompson's Decathlon

I do remember the joy of unboxing new joysticks I think they were Competition Pro
