I'm going to get up on my soapbox here....

    "Stands up".

NO A/C system should need a recharge, if you've lost gas then there's a problem to be fixed! A leak.....

Car Air Con, needs a fixed amount of refrigerant and oil (none of which are "great" for the environment even the A2L's/HFO's etc so...

Please if your A/C stops working or you see a reduction in efficiency... get your system fixed (that stands for home systems as well), Car A/C could be an issue with a seal or one of the pipes/components/joints.. but please get it checked fully...

    "Steps down off Soapbox"

Only 40yrs in the trade so no need to pay me any attention..

Yeah everyone knows that, problem is air con issues can cost a grand for a new system or difficult to get to. Most peoples cars with failled air Cons are fairly old anyway. People are happy to pay £40 for the few years left they will keep the car... not £1k+ for the next owner

Most Air Conditioning/Climate Control problems arise because many people do not regularly operate it, thereby allowing the seals to dry out and gas seep past them. Air Conditioning/Climate Control is not just for hot weather but should be used throughout the year (where necessary, in combination with heating), cooling you in hot temperatures and keeping the glass areas clear when cold and damp. Most car manufacturer's handbooks advise the regular use of Air Conditioning/Climate Control to keep it in good condition.

    This YOG: 100% agree....

On the flipside: I've recharged two vehicles where aircon was either severely inefficient or did nothing at all. In both cases. One about 3 years ago, one about 5 it resolved the issue. Both are still producing very cold air when required. One was using this deal. I've also had one where the initial tests showed a leak, and that it would be expensive to fix. So didn't bother.

From the groupon deal ... "
    • A pressure test will be carried out prior to treatment; if a leak is detected, the recharge and treatment will not be carried out and a full refund will be provided"

there's not a lot to lose here!

As refrigeration engineer, if a leak is detected "is a really interesting stipulation", pressure tests even at 0.9 MAP or PS should be for 24 hours and it isn't said how the leak is detected, drop in pressure over time or some guy listening for a hiss.

But the be all and end all of this is that fridge gasses (A/C) don't get used up and don't deteriorate unless there's an issue with the system.

For R134a, losing just 1 gram of the gas is equivalent to over a 1.3 kg of Co2.

Get your system checked and pressure tested by a fully FGAS 2079 engineer, in my experience, garages don't go to the depths needed by trade qualified engineers.

    "Gets off soapbox again"..

In theory air conditioning in a car fails because there is a fault and recharging without fixing the fault is a waste of time. In practice the system can be recharged and the fault goes away either permanently or at least for several years. It can be argued that the recharge process helps to reseat the seals but that’s a contested point of view. (edited)

    avoid ATS at all costs.

ATS are useless, completely messed up my a/c recharge and could have left me with a huge bill had I not taken my car to an a/c specialist.

I honestly wouldn’t trust ATS with a bulb replacement after my last visit

That service is pointless, last month i did it at ATS, they called me and told me we did this but air con still doesnt work.
    Ok so what now?
Find the garage to fix it waste of money.

Gonna give the air con recharge a miss this year for obvious reasons !

Used this but had to pay for the more expensive one when I turned up as the ats site gave the wrong information. Refund was processed quickly by groupon.

I had mine recharged in June… by Kwik Fit. Barely lasted a month, and all gone. Called them up and they said there was nothing they could do - I must have a leak. I asked them to check for a leak before they did it and it was all fine at that point. Second time I’ve used them and it’s disappeared so fast. Suffice to say I won’t be going back there. If ATS tell you whether there is a leak before they recharge, that’s at least helpful.

Hopefully they put the ultraviolet dye in and fresh compressor oil in the system...

I had an Air Con recharge done here and an anti bac clean. Since then on random occasions puffs of white powder have been coming out of my vents! Can't say for sure they are linked but it did start happening the day after I had the recharge at ATS.

What is a Car Air Conditioning Regas?Over time, a car air conditioning system can lose efficiency due to refrigerant leaks, clogged filters, and worn out seals. In order to maintain your car’s air conditioning, it is highly recommended that you have it regassed annually. Regassing involves evacuating the refrigerant gas from your air conditioning, testing for leakages, then re-filling and pressurising the system. How Often Should You Regas Your Car Air Conditioner? It is recommended that you regas your car’s air conditioning system every one to two years. Whilst some cars can last a good five years before needing a regas, it’s best to put your car through a regular service in order to keep your car’s compressor (the belt-driven device that transfers refrigerant gas into a condenser) in good shape. Even the best-designed vehicles will lose roughly 10% of the refrigerant gas in their air conditioning systems annually.

Would not bother with any garage that can't provide print out from the air con machine.
