How is this 9gen i7 doing those days compere to recent gen?
    plewis00's avatar
Recent gens are faster and more efficient but you still get 6-cores with Hyperthreading and should score around 11K Passmark for a comparison. Even though this is an older machine you do get the benefit of expansion (4 RAM slots, mutiple SSD bays, easy cleaning, modular parts) and build quality - the chassis on this will be far beyond anything else in the price range - grab the base and try to twist it for example.

    It’s a workstation…

I think you need to add refurbished to the title.

Looks more like a professional workhorse than a gaming laptop, but the T1000 graphics card is probably equivalent to a 1050ti so will run less demanding (older) games OK and the processor/RAM should avoid any bottlenecks.

~10% slower than the 1650 it's based off.

Yeah, it's a workstation, ThinkPads aren't really intended as gaming laptops. We had some P53 at work for running AutoCAD on as they're ISV certified.

Sorry - I always struggle with posting on the app and was about to tidy up on the browser and you lovely folk had already done it

Why everyone have to look at a computer as a 'gaming machine'? Why is this the yardstick?!
The P53 is a CAD oriented laptop like the P17 etc'. This is in good condition will be able to tackle almost any CAD task you hand to it. (edited)

Because this site is mainly used by people buying home/leisure goods and one of the biggest use cases domestically is gaming. Commercial users (the target audience for this device) will typically have a unit provided by their IT department, and if a serious self-employed person you'd probably shell out for something a bit more high-end by current standards.

This happens to be a device that could handle both commercial and leisure applications pretty well without excelling at either - but I voted it hot for the workstation aspect. (edited)

About £100 too much, good machine, but not at that price

Have you seen it cheaper elsewhere (not being an ars£ genuinely think this is a solid work horse but happy to be corrected if there is better out there... ageed "gaming" has allways been subjective since dx266 but compared to a new vega7 in a similar price bracket for think this still has the edge on paper at least

Got one of these. Solid machine, but you must update it, or it will overheat.
    robinho22's avatar
What would need updating? Thinking of getting one to process data in GIS, as P14s gen 1 AMD is struggling and only has 8gb RAM. I have no idea about updating RAM or even computers TBH, and appreciate there will be better options. Just want a workhorse to process some data without crashing, and being semi portable is needed. Any thoughts if this is a good deal, much appreciated?
