I would definitely not buy unbranded binos from Amazon. A few years ago I tried buying the most popular at the time on Amazon with stellar reviews, all obviously by people who were either shills or simply did not know better. I got ganged up by the sellers, and Amazon was not helping, it was not pretty. If you are curious here are some of them on my blog.
Anyway, back to the topic, some of the best value are the Lidl binos offered occasionally, they are from a good factory (usually the same one as Bresser IIRC), but can get knocked around when transported and go through less QC, so look through them when you buy them - if you have trouble making the two images "merge", try another pair. The optics will be good, only alignment may be out of sync.
Other than that, anything I mention here would be good (old presentation so prices are twice now). I'd say for example a pair of Bresser Hunter in the £40s (8x40 or 10x50) would be great for most. If you go over 10x, you'd have trouble holding them steady for long without a tripod, so don't try to get max magnification (more magnification for the same aperture is also darker image).

Any recommendations for the best I could get for £40. Even if it meant getting a monocular? Im interested in a pair for casual bird watching and to take on hike but don't want to spend a fortune on something Im unlikely to use with any regularity. Thanks

I bought these on Amazon a while back. Around £15. Not sure you can get them now but many similar. For the money, they are excellent. Bright and contrasty, although they are nearer 8x25 than 10x 25. Perfect for what you need without spending silly money (edited)

Choosing binoculars is a real pain...
A month ago I ordered 2 pairs for ~ £40 each, about half the price they had been. Yet neither was significantly better than a tiny lightweight pair for just a tenner, which is fine for looking at the birds on the garden feeder (and easy to take to the park).

It was always at £125 on Amazon, so seems like a good deal at first glance, but I think it was just stupidly high priced. I mean the PowerView 2.0 10x50 (same size/quality optics just lower power so you are comfortable without a tripod) are at half the price, which is quite unusual. A quick google shows they are as low as £84 elsewhere.

These are £25 and similar. Good reviews too

Unfortunately Amazon binocular reviews are not something worth taking into account. Trust me I know... What seems like a nice pair to someone with no experience (I mean they make things larger, so that's good, right?), will often not even come close in sharpness, brightness and colour when compared with a reasonably priced but decent brand binocular.
Now these specifically are more expensive than decent brands (e.g. Bresser 10x25), so even the "can't afford good ones" argument doesn't hold! (edited)

I also own Hawke ED binoculars which are half decent quality. The cheap pair I bought from Amazon were just to throw in the car. I was seriously surprised for the £15 I paid just how bright and contrasty they were. I went by the many reviews given and they were right. My only gripe was that they were nearer x8 than x10 in magnification. These mass produced units will always offer a duff. Amazon's return policy is excellent though. Don't like them? Send them back and get refunded.
