Selling on Facebook Market Place

I have listed my Ultralite 480 Electric Mobility Scooter on Facebook Market Place and was wondering what is the safest option for payment (I have been scammed in the past)
I have stated that buyer collects
Thanks

Cash only on collection. No ifs, no buts. Check every single note individually. Tough prannies if they don't like like that.

Don't fall for the "I'll send a UPS courier to pick it up " scam. It's a scam!

Don't let them do a "bank transfer" on your doorstep. It'll be a scam app they're using 100%

If you do want a bank transfer look in YOUR account to see if it's in there...not on their phone! And only if you're 100% satisfied the money is in YOUR account, release the item.

Try and have some sort of CCTV or mobile footage.

Don't listen to any sob story. It'll be a load of boulderdash!

    Good luck. (edited)

Most times the bank transfer will be legitimate, there is always a risk of the fake bank app but as long as money shows in your account then it's fine.

One time I had someone try to recall the bank transfer after leaving with item, but once I showed bank evidence (chat history from buyer, timing) they allowed me to keep the funds. So would recommend holding onto evidence and making sure the buyer has ID that matches their bank account (CCTV may be helpful too)

In terms of fake bank app, I had this once and recognised the app straightaway from Facebook posts. Told the guys who showed up I'd wait whole day for the transfer to land in my account, to come back later once it clears if they wanted They waited for a bit before giving up saying they'd come back, they never did.

Cash on collection remains the safest way, but there are always people with fake notes about so you have to be VERY careful.

Make sure the item is out of reach of the buyer in all circumstances until you are happy with payment, sometimes they will look to distract. Say for example handing you fake notes to count, then grab the item and run when you are not looking. (edited)

I also do bank transfer face to face or revolut or monzo. I buy and sell a lot on gumtree and bank transfer is good these days as have to match the name and not just account number and sort code. Always do face to face though.

When I buy something I send them the minimum £1 from my revolut as a test to their bank. It then speeds up the real transaction so can always get them to do a test first and then the rest at end of the meet up. And yeah check your account!

I don't like cash for big items as there is also fake cash.. :/ (edited)

Thank you have asked for cash but how do I check notes are real?

Quick check is the hologram, the word changes between the value and 'Pounds' when the note is tilted, e.g. for a £10 note the word changes between the 'Ten' and 'Pounds'

Can also use a UV light, the type that is used in shops:

I had one the other week who gave me a few notes and a handful of change (at least 30 coins) which I didn't count through - seeing an older lady with a stick sort of made me feel I didn't want to slow the transaction down.

One of the "pound coins" was a 20 eurocent coin, but I do think it was an honest mistake (my partner doesn't agree, as he vaguely knows her). Not worth hunting someone down for, though!

TL;DR: I wouldn't empty my piggybank and use the proceeds to pay a Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace seller, but that's just me (edited)
