Be careful when doing cheap/ free wills! there are alot of unscrupulous company's out there that charge a % of your estate to be an executor. Which in most cases is easy and anybody can do. Could cost your family £1000s of pounds!! READ THE SMALL PRINT!!

Solicitors (and other companies drafting wills) make more money out of probate (being executors) than will drafting, but you don't need to agree to them being the executors, just make sure whoever you nominate is given the right to appoint professional advisors if things get too difficult for them.

For those under 55 you can get a will done under will aid for £100, worth it for a solicitor to draw one up.

This doesn’t cover more exotic scenarios like setting up a Trust or business/farm ownership. But for a more standard will to share your estate with your spouse/children (including a mirrored will for said spouse) they handle it.

I did this earlier this year April in fact, started the free wills procedure and now we are into September and still no sign of my will ever materialising
I won't mention the solicitors for fear of being sued.
I bequeathed a decent amount to 4 charities if my chose that was on there list.
I have been back and forward with contacting this solicitors company and the reason I was given for the late, very late arrival of the will was that all my emails had ended up in there junk mailbox ☹️
So it looks like I will pop my clogs before I receive it
But on a happier note it is for a good cause

I opted for one of these last year, load of junk. I had to use a PDF editor and correct all the things they got wrong. Mine was just a basic will dividing between 3 people and they could not even get that right, I assume they have some template that they just populate, in my case incorrectly

If you're a Trade Union member check if you get a free will. But as is clear from this post the free part is only basic, non complex, no trust fund, no POA. Tax planning.
There will be added fees ranging from £100s to several £1000s for added complexity before the will is completed.

What really annoys me is that the solicitors still get paid for their services (by the charities)! I don't think they're morally allowed to not get paid for stuff

Why should a solicitor work for free?

    What about power of attorney?
    is it free
    Appointing executor,etc
    Chaznik's avatar
That’s a totally separate requirement. A Power of Attorney is not the same a nominating an Executor in your Will
