Are remastered video games a waste of time?

If you've already played and completed the original, is it actually worth the time and money to revisit the game with updated graphics and increased fps? I really enjoyed the original Resident Evil 4, Alan Wake and Dead Space games, but I'm not sure they're worth the replay.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You're only on this earth for a very short time, play what you enjoy

Of course not. The 'remastered' concept is for games whose design is still good enough in the present day, that will see a notable quality improvement on current console hardware. They are for people that did not play the original.

There are so many new games, wasting time replaying MOST old games is pointless. There are, of course, exceptions. Dark Souls games with other builds, or maybe because you finally "got good" and can take on the bosses without the assistance of a 'trainer'. Likewise RPG games with other builds or Bethesda open world games with new mods.

RE4 and Alan Wake are certainly not worth playing again. Dead Space- well you can play that with a different weapon build, and the new version does make some changes- but I'd still say its also a one-time experience.

Depends on how much effort they’ve put into them, how much free time you got for gaming and how much you loved the originals.

alan awake I thought was amazing back in the day, the remaster didn’t age well and found it a boring slog to get through

re4 absolutely loved on the ps2, and the new remake is fantastic, not just the graphics but the overhaul to the gameplay, well worth experiencing even if you’ve played the original

Obviously for games 'remastering' has no inherent meaning. There's no loss in quality between creation and making a production version as there is (or was) for films and music.

It's an updated version of some sort. That can be anything from an almost complete remake to replacing a few textures with better quality versions.

For story/experience games I generally wouldn't bother if you've already finished them. Especially games from the mid-2000s onwards where graphics had gotten good enough that visual technology wasn't limiting artistic vision.

Video games are software. Just like how productivity and leisure software updates aim to give quality of life changes to their apps and programs, it's the same with games. Plus a Remaster or Remake doesn't stop the original from existing. With FFVII I now have the original to enjoy AND the modern remake trilogy. It's beautiful.

New games, remasters and remakes should all exist.

Some might say video games in general are a waste of time, it is what it is. Only you can answer that question.

Depends on you. I personally don't care for them. I played the remastered Tony Hawk's when they came out but they just didn't have the same feel as when I played then as a kid.

I did the same, and felt the same..
You do get a quick hit of nostalgia but it quickly goes

Remakes are often so different it's a completely new experience. Sadly games like Resident Evil 2 you can no longer get the original version, I'd much rather play the Dreamcast or Gamecube versions over the remake.

    As always worth is subjective.

Remasters are overall a great option for people to have. You can play them on up to date hardware, it gives fans of a game the chance to replay them and new people the chance to see what the game is like.

Resident Evil 4 came out on the Gamecube and PS2 and Dead Space was on 360/PS3, most people (meaning the mass market) would have sold those systems on, so getting the chance to replay classics on newer systems is great. Until the remaster, Alan Wake was not on PlayStation, also as Alan Wake 2 was in development it made sense for them to remaster the first game to get people ready for the sequel.

Personally I'd like to see a Resident Evil 2 and 3 remaster (fixed camera angles), like what they did with Resident Evil 1 on the Gamecube. If nothing else at least a PS1 port to the PS4/5. (edited)
