Costco and AppleCare?

Does anyone here have experience getting AppleCare+ when you buy Apple products from Costco?
Got MacBook deal here as a present for my son and I want to get AppleCare too.
How exactly does the process work?
Can I buy it by putting the serial number somewhere?
Or can you only buy AppleCare plus via the AppleID after you switch it on, make a user, and sign in?
Cheers

After it's all set up, click the Apple logo in the top right corner and choose "About This Mac. Click on More info and it'll open his iCloud info and there's an option to choose Applecare there - it's available for the first 60 days after purchase.

I bought an iPad from Costco in US. There at least when you buy the AppleCare at the same time they just register it against the serial number.

I think you can also just go onto Apple site and buy against serial number.

But it will prompt you once you’ve set it up anyway. You get 30 days or so to decide if you want it.

Cheers for the replies, I was able to buy the AppleCare plus when I added the MacBook to my AppleID account.
