Is this even basmati or more of that hybridised extra long grain crap that lacks any basmati aroma whatsoever (wasnt even classified as basmati until around 10 years back) and is now the default product we get sold misleadingly under the name basmati?

exactly is this a monsanto special?

This rice isn’t suitable for boiled rice , perfect for biryani/pilau/fried rice
    tas_shah's avatar
But surely boiling is part of the process of the dishes you have just described

What other brand basmati rice would people recommend? Have a rice cooker and now have space to store a big bag. I’ve tried blue Tilda (edited)

Blue Tilda or any Tilda is awful in a rice cooker. I recently got a £190 rice cooker and found this rice to be the best so far: yum-asia.com/uk/…kg/

ASDA currently have the 10kg 'normal Laila rice for 13.50; bought some yesterday. We tend to get whatever basmati rice is on offer, sometimes Laila, Salaam etc. I honestly can't tell the difference!52036401-98Qgb.jpg

That’s why I say Rice is rice! You agree

How did those who bought this rice brand for the first time find it? I have been buying Mega Veetee which I’m very happy with and onto my last bag. Wondering how these would compare.
    Skk1's avatar
These are also nice but the rice is not as long as the Veete mega or Black Laila. These are better quality than your bog standard basmati like the green Laila etc. You'll be fine with these.

these are much better than Gold and Green pack especially for biryani and pilau as stay firm and separate after cooking and taste is also better but they are bit pricey and not available everywhere

    Who sells them?

Modern basmati growers obsession with grain length makes me think like sports car drivers they are over compensating for something.....no not that!
But does seem as basmati grains have grown longer they have got less and less flavour and fragrance.
Do the fools realise there's actually very popular short grain varieties available as well that don't seem to suffer poor sales as their consumers focus on the flavour and cullinary purpose.

If I wanted a flavourless starchy accompaniment to my meal I could just boil up some pasta. I bought basmati for its acetyl pyroline secret ingredient... sadly so secret nowadays there's hardly any of it in a bowl of modern basmati. (edited)

My next rice purchase will be thai jasmine rice....if it tastes and smells more like the old basmati I know and remember than ths stuff packaged and sold as Basmati today the greedy agri-businesses of south asia will have lost a lifelong customer and I will highly reccommend other 'basmati' consumers do likewise.
    Maxm4n's avatar
Jasmine rice isn't basmathi either ,trying tastes like very, very normal white rice ...
  16. azl's avatar
Is this better than the AAA mai Thai rice which can usually be £6 for 5kg?
    hotsir's avatar
Rice is rice, rice is rice

What’s the difference between this rice and the black Laila rice?
    saaj786's avatar
I think black one is gluten free and better then these

Decent rice. Just got 10kg yesterday from Asda for 17£
  20. maddoglewis's avatar
Would rather have 10kg of Kohinoor Gold from Morrisons for £16.
    tas_shah's avatar
Ooh I wish I knew that. I just got 10kg laila from Asda. Generally speaking kohinoor is better. But rice is natural produce and quality varies year to year depending on rain sun etc (edited)

kohinoor gold same price aswell sainsburys

If you look at all the supermarket basmati rice, they never list a country of origin. And that's why I don't buy it. I go straight to Costco and get me a nice big bag of Pakistani basmati. At least I know where it's coming from and not from the cheapest source. They were quite a few reports of toxic (arsenic) content in certain Indian rice. (edited)
    tas_shah's avatar
You can get issues anywhere and everywhere. Rice in both side of the borders are grown in similar soil and fed by the same rivers. Taste is the same. As for quality you will find certain brands buy cheaper others buy expensive. Meaning they look for crop price quality point reflecting market segment
