Yes, good deal.

Part Aluminium casing, says IPS display on the box and on their webpage.
Battery life is average, only a 2 cell unit.
Also, It has M2 SSD expansion slot.

Looks good...this could be one to replace my very aging and trustworthy laptop friend....saying this very quietly, as its listening.....
I found a review on this exact laptop which also has a video of it, its in german but in chrome It ask you if you want to translate into english (video is in german)
computerbild.de/art…tml

It doesn't always have to be a laptop with an Intel processor: The Aldi notebook Medion Akoya E15302 with AMD's Ryzen 5 3500U worked about as fast in the test as notebooks with Intel's Core i5 CPU. The workmanship is good, the equipment too, the option of simply retrofitting a second M.2 SSD is by no means common.

PROS
  • High pace of work
  • Second M.2 SSD can be easily retrofitted thanks to the maintenance hatch
  • USB-C connection with display port technology
  • Light weight for a 15.6 incher

CONS
  • Few connections
  • Somewhat short battery life
  • RAM firmly soldered

SATISFYING

SSilver case, the lid made of aluminum, the bottom group made of plastic. 15.6-inch display, framed in beautifully narrow borders: The Medion Akoya E15302 notebook , which is available online from Aldi Süd (" Aldi delivers ") from April 29, 2020, looks chic, but is not a standard product, as this detailed test shows.

Medion Akoya E15302: 1.9 kg

The Medion Akoya E15302 weighs exactly 1,878 grams. This is not extremely easy for a 15.6 incher, but it is also not brutally difficult for daily transport from A to B, even if the power supply increases the total weight by another 383 grams. In addition, the Aldi notebook does not have an excessive number of connections, but all important ones are available. There is an HDMI socket for connecting separate monitors , and a USB-C socket for external SSDs . Printers , on the other hand, connect users to the classic USB Type A socket. There is also a socket for connecting headsets and a memory card reader for small microSD cards .

(Right: Switch for deactivating the camera (1) , USB type A socket (2) , headset connection (3) .
Left: HDMI connection (4) , USB-C socket (5) , memory card reader (6) .
)

Medion Akoya E15302: anti-reflective display

Great: The display can be opened with one hand without the floor assembly floating in the air. There are few notebooks balanced in this way. These include Apple's expensive MacBooks . The display with a diagonal of almost 40 centimeters has been framed by the manufacturer Medion on the left, right and top in chic, narrow edges. In the upper margin, however, the webcam required for video calls still fits, which can be deactivated using the switch on the right side of the notebook when not in use. The image quality of the Medion was not completely convincing in the test: photos and films showed it sharply, the maximum brightness (259 candela / m 2) is too small to see anything on the screen outdoors when there is a lot of sunshine. In addition, the Medion shows colors a little pale - but it is anti-reflective. There are only a few reflections on the display.

Medion Akoya E15302: AMD Ryzen 5 3500U

But what's actually under the hood? If you undo the 13 screws on the underside, you can catch a glimpse of the interior: The drive is the Ryzen 5 3500 , which is located under a black heat sink and heat pipe - a four-core processor that AMD introduced in early 2019. In the CPUThere is also the Vega 8 graphics chip responsible for image reproduction. The processor and graphics chip may store calculated data in an 8 gigabyte working memory. Shortcoming: It is soldered and can therefore not be expanded or exchanged for new modules in the event of a defect. Users store documents, images and programs on an SSD in a large M.2 format chewing gum stick and effectively 477 gigabytes of memory - unfortunately still with SATA instead of a fast PCI Express connection. If the memory is too short: The Medion has a small maintenance hatch on the underside. A second M.2 SSD can be easily inserted thereretrofit (512 GB from 75 euros). By the way: The stripped-down operating system Windows 10 S is preinstalled, but a free update to the full Windows 10 Home worked without any problems in the test.

40860256-5glLZ.jpg(If the memory is not enough: Loosen two screws, open the flap, insert the second M.2 SSD, done)

Medion Akoya E15302: nice and fast

And how fast does the Aldi notebook work? Fast SSD and nimble processor - thanks to this combination, the Medion started in just twelve seconds and offered a very high work speed, even with exhausting image processing with Photoshop. The device disappointed when playing - the graphics chip Vega 8 is too weak for titles like " Battlefield 5 ", so figures only twitch in slow motion over the screen. But if you reduce the detail reproduction and the resolution in the game, you can gamble with the Medion. Because the Vega 8 has a little more steam than, for example, the Intel graphics chip HD Graphics 620.

40860256-PXiiX.jpg
(Inner life: The AMD CPU Ryzen 5 3500U is hidden under a heat sink (1) , the 8 GB RAM (2) is soldered. The M.2 SSD (3) effectively offers 477 GB of storage, the fully charged battery (4) provides energy for around four hours of work.)

Medion Akoya E15302: A little bit of breath

However, the battery life is only acceptable: in the test, the juice was enough for three and a half hours of work without an outlet, while video playback was almost four hours. It also took a comparatively long time to fill the battery with energy again: three hours and 23 minutes passed before the Medion was charged.

Medion Akoya E15302: test result

It doesn't always have to be a laptop with an Intel processor: In the test, the Aldi Medion Akoya E15302 with AMD's Ryzen 5 3500U worked roughly as fast as comparable notebooks with Intel's Core i5 CPU. The workmanship is good, the equipment too. The option of simply retrofitting a second M.2 SSD is by no means common. The notebook will be available online from April 29th at sued.aldi-liefert.de .

Great deal thanks for posting
I would put 512GB SSD in the title to cover you otherwise you might get people vote this cold. Just a heads up.
Seems good spec for the price
Screen..? TN would make this so so, IPS would make it hot

TN versions with this core spec except 256gb SSD have been in the £300-350 range before.

According to that link it's Windows 10 S Mode - is this a major pitfall?

Apparently you can leave S mode very easily if it’s an issue. I’m getting the laptop for my son so it’s not something that concerns me.

What do you mean by this link? As I don't think this is the same as the OP's. Your link states Windows 10 S Mode OS, where as the OP's is full Windows 10.
Might be a silly question but.... what's the difference between notebook and laptop??
Does anyone know if the 8GB RAM is fixed/soldered?

Is there a 2nd spare DIMM slot allowing this to be upgraded to 16GB RAM?

No USB 3.0?

Lol I thought the same So I googled it and this is what I found..

A laptop is a small, portable computer — small enough that it can sit on your lap. Nowadays, laptop computers are more frequently called notebook computers, though technically laptops are somewhat larger in size than notebooks, in both thickness and weight.

This is the same model as per the photo on Aldi's website if you zoom in you can see the model number.

On Aldi UK website they simply say Windows 10, not actually specifying which version. However upon researching I see S mode can be disabled but haven't yet established if this is something MS charge an upgrade fee for.

Got this from the German link posted earlier, says 4.5 hours in video playback mode.

one click in Windows store to change out of s mode to home.

Great thanks. I saw the MS guide about how to do it but wasn't sure whether you had to pay. The same guide also says simply click to get Pro so I'm sure a fee would apply there at least.

Does it have a LAN port?

OK cheers for that. The UK website is pretty poor on spec, compared to the German one by the looks of it. Can't read German but there a lot more written there

Found the answer here in this detailed review.

Unfortunately memory is soldered and can't be expanded

If this had 16GB RAM it would be a brilliant deal. Windows 10 has become quite bloated and I easily push near to 8gb ram usage. Microsoft Teams (essential to the new normal now) sucks up a lot of ram too.

This might be good for light users but think the fixed 8GB ram will be the limitation eventually.

Here's a review. Its 'auf Deutsch' but Google will translate it for you...

PS - long term owner of several Medion laptops (including the one I'm typing this on). They're okay bits of kit.

How would this compare with Honor Magicbook 14? TIA
Interested about this laptop, i missed the dell inspiron 5000 one a few days ago, so keen to know if the ram can be upgraded, and if the general consensus this is a good laptop for under £500
Looks good but it’s says available to pre-order with add to basket.

Thanks for finding this. The RAM would be an achilles heel for me on this. A fantastic purchase otherwise.

There's no charge to switch to the full version of Windows 10 (which I would definitely recommend) but you can't revert back to S mode should you change your mind later on.

From the full review here, battery life is not amazing, 3-4 hours in normal use so won't get you through a working day:

Aldi webpage product image shows QWERTZ keyboard not QWERTY.
If anyone is wondering about Windows 10 S it can be easily changed for free via the Microsoft Store.

That’s how Aldi works. The specialbuys are available to preorder a week before becoming officially available. I find any decent stuff goes in the first few days of the pre-order. Not sure if this will be available in store but would rather buy online and wait a week or two for delivery than go to my local store right now.
Shows how much we're being fleeced, still. 4000 series Ryzen is out there now. This 3000 series Ryz laptop should be much cheaper than it is.
