Honest question... do we really think this chipset can handle 16gb? If frame rates would be so low anyway if it tried to hold such high quality textures is there really an issue this being 8gb?

I've not found a definitive answer, but it looks like the two versions have effectively the same performance.

The idea that a GPU 'doesn't have enough power' to utilise more VRAM is a fallacy that I see thrown around quite a lot, but it's not true. Texture quality really doesn't affect performance so long as you have enough VRAM. Turning up textures from low to ultra should have close to zero effect on your framrate, so long as you're not hitting VRAM limits. Once you do exceed VRAM limits, what happens largely depends on the game. Some crash outright. Some exhibit overall depressed performance. Others just stutter to varying degrees.

It's also the case that many games look a lot better on low settings with ultra textures than they do on ultra with low textures. Texture quality is usually quite a destructive thing to lower. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a good example of that, where the low textures look like something straight from a PS2 game.

So even when these GPUs are struggling so much that you need to go down to low or medium settings to get a decent framerate, on the 16GB version you'll still be able to crank textures to ultra for a long time to come, providing a boost to visuals with no performance impact.

Not bad, Intel Arc is decent value for money but the main problem comes with compatibility (Drivers) as Intel are having to play catch-up by releasing driver update waves for basically every game ever made ... So right now you are better off paying the extra money for an NVIDIA or AMD one but In the next 5-10yrs these will be right up there with best me thinks
    jonorl's avatar
And by that time, they will be as expensive as AMD or NVIDIA.

Intel are great if you only play modern games. Drivers for older games are still not there. Hopefully, in a few years, they will have caught up.

Do have to wonder if they will ever truly bother with old games. Maybe pick a top X of still popular titles and try and fix those.

Or more likely they will continue to reply on Microsoft's D3D9On12 translation layer. That is git but unsure whether it gets true open source additions as if it was true open source then enthusiasts could fix certain games and Intel could lever that.

That Intel absolutely must have Resizable BAR on or suffer hugely is also an important point to mention. In fact, that should almost be a sticky on any Intel Arc deals so let me post it as a separate post too.

Aside from Intel obvious problem with older games which already mentions, I feel it is very important that buyers are aware that Intel Arc really really depends on Resizable BAR.
Various articles on this, but I'll link to TPU one
    techpowerup.com/rev…tml
and the the main part of 1440P chart (1080P and 4K were similar):
50024751-bBl1b.jpgThat's for the 16GB version and from October so with the old drivers, but the relative performance loss has not changed.

For new builds with working Rebar options in the BIOS this is not that relevant, but for anyone who can't enable rebar it is.
    Samuelmccartney's avatar
I have gtx 1070ti's in sli, I don't have a resizeable bar due to having an 8700k.

I've been eyeing up the cheap intel arcs and I know the limitations due to the lack of rebar, however would I still not see an increase in performance?
  5. Graham_Younger's avatar
I flashed a basic matx 8th gen intel Asus board last week, with its latest Bios and to my surprise it gave it resizable bar. I also bought one of these cards a month or so ago but returned it to Amazon when I realised it wouldn't work with my VR headset other annoyances were the constant pop ups from the drivers I couldn't disable and the fix to stop the constant 45watt idle power draw wouldn't work for me either. But I was impressed with the raw performance and apparently the latest drivers improve things even further.

Just a shame it's the 8GB one, only the 16GB one is worth it.
    Seanspeed's avatar
8GB is still acceptable for sub £250 parts like this, in my opinion.

Really Hope intel keeps up with the GFX business, the market needs a shake up from team red and team green
    Somersett's avatar
Intel isn't it. Their only hope was that AMD and Nvidia priced their GPUs so high, that Intel could use a massive die from TSMC to compensate for all the weaknesses in their design, and still price high enough to manage avoiding making too much of a loss per unit.

Now GPU prices are set to crash (in the mid and low end), Intel would have to sell their future cards far too low to ever justify the mega expensive cutting edge mega die they'll need just to run a distant third in performance. So Intel is focusing on iGPU, GPU on the same substrate as CPU for notebooks, and a potential low end add-in GPU for basic PC systems sold in Asia and the third world. Together with the usual trendy exploration of AI on GPU.

Good gaming GPUs are a level of tech well beyond Intel- and heaven only knows, Intel has been trying for decades to make worthwhile graphics chips, and has purchased so many specialised graphics companies in a pathetic attempt to finally learn how to do it.

Intel is the new apple, these will be selling for £50,000 in 20 years time, especially if it's in the original box.

By that metric, I guess a latte will be £100k as well for the value in this.

With current drivers and current games this card typically falls between the RX6600/3060 and the RX6600XT with a few outliers below and above these.
There are still big issues with some games, particularly older games, some of which won’t play at all or are so bad it’s not worth trying.
    kharma45's avatar
Which older games are still really problematic after the recent updates?
