  • Look for stain-resistant fabrics – Children are messy! Stain-resistant fabrics are often coated in Teflon, or similar products, so the stains will come out easier in the wash.

  • Label EVERYTHING – Really, who wants to have to shop for replacements a month into the school year? Invest in some writeable or ready-printed labels, so your child's clothing can be easily identified even if it ends up in the lost property.

  • Does your school (or the PTA) have a second-hand uniform sale or swap? A great way to recycle old uniforms and save money.

  • Scuff-proof shoes are a must-have to live up to the rough and tumble of playground games.

  • Make sure there's room to grow - Kids grow really FAST, so make sure to take this into consideration when choosing your sizes.

  • Go for dark socks and tights if it's an option - white never stays that way for long!

  • Buy trousers with reinforced knees to help protect against against wear and tear

  • Hate ironing? I know I do! Look out for non-iron, or crease-resistant options.

The school uniform grant is designed to help UK families on low incomes with school uniform costs. The amount varies depending on where you live, and in some areas, it's not available at all, so the best way to check if you are eligible is through the government’s website.

Typically you can apply if you qualify for Free School Meals or receive certain benefits you may be entitled.

Grants vary depending on location and could be anything up to £200

Over the years many local councils in England have pulled out of the School Uniform Grant Scheme - Enter your postcode to see if your council area is one of the few that remain and still offer grants

I don't know if the quality will be the same as it's been years since my school days but M&S School Uniform was the most comfortable for me... as comfortable as school uniform gets anyway. Asda George was a close second

George have a 100day policy if your child grows to next size they will exchange for free. I'm sure most of us buy a little bigger anyway but handy to know. The staff told me this at checkout.
