Weird how expensive CD players have become, they are more expensive now than in the late 80's.

Suppose it's because they are so niche now. (edited)

Cds get a bit of a bad press after all the beard stroking hipster vinly revival...nothing wrong with vinyl ..just upgraded my turntable ..but CDs can still sound great ...and arguably better quality than streaming .

Trouble with a lot of people they've never heard their favourite music through a half decent system . (edited)

Surely the expiry year was 1985

And what took its place from 1985 until iPods and then streaming took over?

I've been hoovering them up at 10 for a £1 I local charity warehouses. Actually listening to stuff I liked but would never have spent money on in the past.

Still can't beat CDs for sound quality versus streaming and you own the media. Played on the right equipment nothing comes close. It is likely that CD's will actually increase in value as people realise that streaming (rental) services are actually a con. (edited)

As a vinyl fan I would just replace the word CD with vinyl. Although CDs are out in terms of value for now, streaming is just sheer convenience. However for me when I listen to music I really listen to it so it's my only focus and therefore I'm not bothered by convenience so much as it's the event

this is a good CD player IMO. Updated my CA from the Azur to this to go with a CA AXA amp and really happy. The AXC is currently £275 at Richer Sounds and CA as RRP so this is a good deal for a decent mid entry CD platform. Plus it was my first post lol

Well done for your first post.
Yes it's certainly cheaper than RS so a bargain if you want one. I would definitely have bit if I wasn't happy with the dvd player I currently use with my CA amp. You've certainly started a good debate.

people forget that a lot of original master tapes were lost in fires, then the only 'original' left was the CD it was released on, I've got original CD's where the original master tapes are long gone. Also the booklets etc that you don't get with an mp3. Streaming services also change versions of tracks to different re-masters (or even remove them) whereas your original CD never will. CD's will be around for a while yet.

I tried a CA amp recently in my home and it sounded awful, so I can only presume this would be of the same quality. Go for something more and get fat greater sound. Granted I can't find anything sub £270 that's any good, but if your spending £180 on a cd player the presumption is that you can save the extra 100 for a much better player

just one RCA line out? So no digital connector? My Yamaha CD player is connected by a Chord Clearway coax digital cable to my Audiolab amp, great CD sound

I'd spend a bit more on player that has digital connectors
This is probabably fine for a beginner system though

Yeah lacking digital output is a poor choice

Interesting discussion here, I personally still think CDs have a lot of appeal over both streaming and vinyl. It is strange in a way how they have become so obselete so quickly where vinyl hasn't. It's also funny how trends and fashion have such an influence over certain things.

Although I realise it's subjective, and some may prefer the warmer sound of vinyl, I don't think one necessarily sounds superior than the other. CDs are so cheap now it almost doesn't make sense to buy a non physical, digital, lossier version of an album on a likely inferior sounding system for more money. I get the convience/space thing though, but if that's the case it's the same with records (moreso as they take up more space).

I think it's a good time right now if you still like CDs. Yesterday I saw a Ride and Public Enemy album for 50p each at a charity shop, Sonic Youth Goo for £1.99 and Buzzcocks singles going steady for £1.49. All fantastic albums and the digital and vinyl versions of these are likely 10 times the price. 😁 (edited)

There's nothing special about a CD it's just one way of moving digital files. Outside of the motions of putting a CD in a CD player.

One way I could see someone preferring the sound would be if there's something particular your CD player decoding and amping appeals to you. But if you output digitally to a capable AMP that's not valid any longer

Vinyl is different entirely as it's analogue from the record to the speakers. (edited)
