About this deal
This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:
We all know that Halfords isn't the best bike shop around but they do sell some half decent bikes. This Carrera Subway Limited Edition Hybrid has had some good comments made about it and, at £162 it is as cheap as I can remember it.
The price on the website is £179.99 but if you go via quidco you get 3% but, more importantly, there is a 10% off code just now of B13BK01 which can be used against any bike.
The spec of the bike is:
Approximate Weight (KG): 14.2
Chainset: Shimano
Exact Frame Size: 20"
Forks: Hi-tensile steel
Frame: 7005 Aluminium
Frame Material: Alloy
Front Brake: Tektro Alloy V-Brake
Front Mech: Shimano
Gear Shifters: Shimano Altus
Gender: Mens
Handle Bars: Steel 660mm riser bar
Headset: Semi Integrated
Hubs: Alloy with QR
Number of Gears: 21
Pedals: Alloy
Rear Brake: Tektro Alloy V-Brake

Rims: Doubewall Alloy
Saddle: Velo foam, Carrera branded
Stem: Alloy 7-deg rise, 75/90mm
Tyres: CST - hybrid tyres
Wheel size: 26"
Frame Colour: Red
Suspension: Rigid.
Not the greatest around, but not bad for £161.99. My link is to the 20" version bit other sizes are available.

Complete rubbish, the average height of an adult male in the UK is 5' 9" to 5'10" depending on the source. A 20" frame would be usually be classified as "Large" for a hybrid bike.
I have a friend who is 6''7" and his sister is 6'2" (Size 12 feet, poor lass). They would be the first to agree that they are not representative of the vast majority of people in the UK, and neither is your family by the sounds of it.
Basing your expectations on the size of a rugby team makes as much sense as basing it on a room full of jockeys.

@andynicol - if you can afford the Boardman do not question it - just buy it. If you are going to put some miles on the bike, then the Boardman will be far more enjoyable than this one.
I'm not saying that this is a bad deal (it's a great spec for the cash) but the Boardman is in a different league - hence the very different price tag.
@Biker Jeff - I agree, the Crossfire for a start with 700C wheels make more sense for a hybrid. The Subway just seems like a compromised mountain bike.
@tightpants - completely agree. British Cycling membership is great - provides basic insurance and some good discounts. I've just renewed family membership and that seems a bargain given the cover you get.
If you are in the market for a cheap bike, it is always worth checking out Decathlon bikes too - great value for money!

You may have really long/short arms which will bring the top tube dimensions into play, you may prefer a more attacking riding style, you may prefer a more compact riding style - too many variables in play, and comparing one 19" bike to another doesn't work either. It will give you a guide but there is only one way to know for certain and that is to sit on it.
don't get me wrong, this is an SCE bike for the cash, if that is all you have/want to spend. but if you can afford the Boardman then do it, far far better bike.
Fair point, but back to bed with you until you can get out of the right side of bed ... otherwise your weekend will be ruined
Unlucky!
Rudyard Kipling wrote "To be born an Englishman is to win first prize in the lottery of life"
Probably a bit big but go and try it,if you can't sit on the saddle and touch the floor with your toe then it is too big.
There is more rubbish talked about bikes nowadays than enough ever since it became trendy for the 20+ to ride. For ordinary road and lane use almost anything will do fine. I used to race bikes on time trials and road races in the day and the overpriced under engineered crap they sell today at inflated prices just proves that nobody ever lost money by underestimating the gullibility of the British public. The same idiots that change their 'phones every few months.
Assuming stephenashforth is English, we now seem to have an Englishman, Scotsman and a Welshman arguing over a bike. There must be a good punchline in there somewhere?!
btw, heat from me!

Some of their staff are not the best at putting bikes together. A number of people have had to make adjustments after having bought bikes there.
Yeah, like forgetting to tighten the rear brakes (not fun coming down a hill)
Given the state of most roads, good suspension can be a god send ... cheap pogo-stick suspension is a pain though.
maybe so, but his pies are crap
I think you need a smaller size than 18" to be honest.
@andynicol,
I went for the MX race recently and have found it excellent. Use it with the suspension locked out for commuting and it's quick and a decent spec, have used it very little on bike trails but found it adequate. I'd suggest it's worth the extra and I'm glad I got it.
The Decathlon Rockrider 8.1 is considered on of the best value bikes around. Although not a deal and £549 the small is suitable for a height of 4'11 to 5'4. There's also a fair few 16" and 17" frame bikes at Halfords. Best bet is to go to a shop and get measured up though, as all frames and bikes are different so a 16" frame on one bike may be too big and a 17" on another too small.
Go instore and sit on the bike, make sure you can put your feet flat on the floor and the seat column has at least an inch in adjustment left!
A lot depends on your own preferred riding style. I would try both the 18" and 20" with the saddle at different heights and then decide.
If you're going to ride in the wet, you'll want mudguards - assuming you're not keen on ending up with loads of water/muck thrown onto you from the road. Whether you want to buy these now or leave till the weather turns - you can get mudguards that are easy enough to fit yourself - depends on how much you're planning to use it I guess.
Yes it's not made by Raleigh it's just using their branding. Several have popped up on classifieds recently after people found they were not very good. Take a look at the Rockrider 5.0 from Decathlon if your budget is limited and a used bike is not a option. A bad bike will put you off cycling forever.

Thanks for the info and link.
5'9" to 6'0" is small for an adult male these days.
My son is 15 and 6'2", my daughter is 16 and 5'11", I am about 6'5".
Of about 20 lads in my son's colts rugby team I reckon on 2-3 are less than 6'.
People are just taller these days.
Of course , a rugby team is a good representation of the general public!
Time to check-15 minutes,tools-1 universal bike spanner +screwdriver, knowledge, you have got me there ,if you are not bright enough to look at a bike for a few minutes and work out what does what then nobody can help you, check goods-it's your life if you are too stiff necked to check perhaps A&E is the right place for you.
Too busy to check!!! Seems we have a generation of people who are so busy being rocket scientists and brain surgeons they have no time for living. How come so many are unemployed? Suspect they are the same people who can't buy a house because after buying the latest 'phone, the trendiest car,the current trainers and paying for 3/4 nights a week "on the lash" whine they haven't got enough money. What an awful generation.
A few of them can write decent English though!
Just got home via a bit of shopping, WOWZA what a revalation an absolutely amazing bike/ride. It must be 3 Times lighter than my other bike, very smooth ride, easy to use gears, really nice but basic bike, what a joy, ta again op amazing deal wish I could give u more heat BTW I've even managed to christen it both tyres covered in dog do! Going to wash it now I actually feel just like going out for another ride

I know I know. This (broad strokes) generation not to mention the population are certainly not entitled to goods which are fit for purpose regardless of their knowledge etc. Oh wait a second look what has happened to our motor industry from 1945 and on. Customers just went else where when they weren't shown any respect for their money. Your attitude and theirs is a joke. The paying customer isn't. Thanks for highlighting this for everyone in the forum.
Sad little armchair warrior aren't you, with your oh so clever and brave comments.
Heat.
Because a lot of their shops have muppets working in the bike dept..... make sure you check it over properly after they've assembled any bike.
