I would get the EDGE 1000 instead, widely available on Fb market and ebay for around £50-60 and far more superior to the 820 (processing performance and functionality).

I agree, but for my needs (triathlon/ time trials) the form factor of devices like the 820 / wahoo bolt are much better

I’d be wary of battery life for anything over 3-4hours if it’s quite old. And I find the processing really slow on the navigation. Great for the price however.

Mine is at least this old and the battery still lasts for ages.

You can easily update the maps to the latest version for free on this unit

I am currently using a 530 which you can buy as cheaply as £160 using Garmin student site (accessible via Totem/ Unidays etc) which i think is absolutely amazing (so good there's no way I'm considering upgrading to the 540/840 with the price difference
However my wife regularly uses my 820 on rides and I use it on my trainer sometimes and i think the battery hasn't given up on a ride yet and I'd imagine it's been used for 3-4 hours. I imagine if you're thinking about buying this for £70 then you probably wouldn't be riding for much longer than that?
*I Took out my mtb today so used my 820 and after an hours ride the charge went from 100%- 82%

    Heat added

That's really helpful I just downloaded the GB map and France where it about to holiday. Only issue is that I don't know the difference between the maps types and I may have downloaded the wrong one..

I only road bike so which map should I download do you think?

I think maybe the 'bbbike' one but there are others i.e. 'on trail' 'openfierslite' and 'opentopo' wherever they mean ?

    Help appreciated 😁

I have the 520, 820, 530 and 1030. The 820 benefits from the touch screen for setting up.....but it's not that useful when in use. The other comments are true. It's a bit slow, and the battery could be limited....but can hold much more mapping than the 520. I still use it.....and if you can't stretch to the 530, worth it

I was confused by the picture of the unit. It says 'Train' but that's definitely the picture of a bike!

Good price, but the 820 and 520 are very slooow to boot, plan and update routes and do anything requiring computer power. If possible, avoid x20 and go for x30, which are much better. Battery life on the 820 doesn't have a great reputation, and the touch screen is supposed to be a bit flaky in wet conditions.

I have a 1000 and battery life is poor..you really need to carry a power storage facility for any rides beyond 4 hrs..recharge while having a coffee break.

Yup, would echo the comments - the 820 wasn't Garmin's finest hour but the 830 is excellent with solid "all day" battery life, no problem at all. Rode mine from one end of Mallorca to the other, straight through the mountains and still had 40% left at the end! I would certainly look for an 830 (or 530) over this model.

As a note, the 840 has just come out too... ;-)

Oh....and I bounced my 820 when I didn't attach it properly. Still works...but looks very second-hand. I now use the lanyard on my units

The navigation on the 530 is worse than useless like the support.

Whats good to get? Need something to link with strava and would be good for a map.
