Would this be good to get for someone looking for their first garmin watch. For general fitness like strength training and cardio, hiking etc. I currently use a couple year old Huawei, and was also considering the Huawei GT3 Pro and the Venu 2 watches.

Make no mistake, this an excellent price for this watch. However, it may be more than you need for general fitness training.

Although Garmin would hate to admit it, most people could get by with one of their entry level watches like the Forerunner 55 which can be bought for about £120, or even its predecessor the FR45 which can be bought on eBay or elsewhere for about £60 to £70 if you are prepared to go down the refurb route.

It is quite a jump to the next reasonably current Forerunner which is the FR255 as it costs about £240. Again, you can go back one model to the FR245 and save the best part of £100.

The original Venu is a nice watch but you are paying a bit extra for the Amoled screen which may not be a priority. Its sister model is the Vivoactive 4 which is exactly the watch as the Venu but with an ordinary screen. The Venu 2 range is also excellent but quite pricey.

You mentioned hiking in your question. If you just want to track your hikes then all the watches I have mentioned, plus the original Instinct range, would do you. If, however, you want to navigate your hike using your Garmin then you are looking at a watch with mapping facilities. These are obviously more expensive and could mean the Fenix 6 or 7, the Forerunner 945/955/965 or even the Epix 2.

My advice is always to spend a bit of time reading the DC Rainmaker site as he posts some of the best reviews, including all the currently available Garmin models.

I really want this watch but the main reason is just to have a step counter that I don't have to charge. That and telling the time would be the only reason I pull the trigger... should I do it..?!
    Msx98's avatar
This lasts 40 days without a charge and charger in about 90 mins. I'd say you're better off with a cheaper instinct if that's important. The standard solar 2 can be found for 150 I reckon on a good day.

Good deal. Happy with everything, except the strap which I found uncomfortable so I swapped it for a nylon one which is much better.

    180mm (7, 1/8 inch) wrists.
    TheTrick_Shot95's avatar
Where did you buy the nylon strap from if you don’t mind me asking?

    Back to £450

Looks like a great price but some of the functions will not be used by 99% of people. Night vision goggles use, high altitude jumping, and the kill switch as well. Slightly thicker than the standard 2x as well. Got many features of the high end Fenix line.
  7. Nippernator's avatar
Incredible deal! Thanks OP. I live in Austria and even with international shipping of 25 pounds this is by far the best deal I've seen on this watch.
  8. Msx98's avatar
    Super hawt
  9. paulvandyk's avatar
Wow, got a normal version of 2x at this price and thought it was a bargain but this is even better. Hot!
  10. Msx98's avatar
Cheers OP. Solid replacement for a 7x I can sell for 300 more. Do I need music? No. Maps I use every now and then and I'll just plan better instead. Climb Pro I'll miss but that's available on the 5 plus so could bag a beat up one of I have to.

This should be deal of the day. Rrp is 450 and was only released mid April. (edited)

I have a few Garmins (965 + Epix Pro 51mm right now) and I have always been tempted to try an Instinct and as this price it seems rude not to

No idea what I am going to do with 3 watches!- the Epix 51mm is fantastic and I really rate the 965 too.

I am not sure its THAT much of a bargain. as £450 is too close to 7x Sapphire prices though.
  11. MrClemente's avatar
Scorching hot! Don't know why this isn't getting more heat, its a great saving. Been looking at the Instinct Solar range for a while now, and this pricing has sealed it for me. Ordered and arriving tomorrow, cheers OP! (edited)

Because the Instinct line always seemed to be a bit unloved even though it's very feature-packed and at the end of the day, it's basically a smartwatch with monochrome display which is what a lot of people see if they don't look deeper. At a quick glance, it could be passed off as a Casio G-Shock despite what it can do.
  12. Craig_ward's avatar
Absolutely brilliant deal, moving from an Instinct 2 Solar to this due to the dual band GPS, bigger display , bigger battery and torch features
  13. AndrewE's avatar
    how is this for running?
  14. mentelgen's avatar
Could this work with Strava etc?
    Rob_Samsung's avatar
Yes. You use Garmin Connect and this syncs with Strava if you wish. (edited)
  15. WahWahWhammyBar's avatar
Not as comfortable as my 2 solar... But has a torch

This is gonna be a hard decision
    Craig_ward's avatar
I am in the same boat , bit on the price but much bigger than my Solar 2
  16. GrabbyFeet's avatar
Ordered! I would have preferred the none tactical version as I won't use the extra features but I like the price you found. I am using a black instinct solar currently (off the price glitch two Christmas's ago ) and also have a blue instinct solar I gave to a family member but I fancy the extra metrics as I came over from a forerunner 235 before that. Thanks for sharing, I hope Jura are a good company to deal with... (edited)
    Rob_Samsung's avatar
You never know. You might do a tactical HALO jump and then have to use UV goggles to see the time. Then get captured and have to use the kill switch so noone can see what your PBs are and your heart rate. 😁 (edited)

I eventually decided to take mine back for a refund. I live only a few miles from Ashbourne, so was it easy to return to a shop and no postage cost (they didn’t offer to return for free).
Great gadget but I don’t need one, as I like the 7x I usually wear (need more willpower with ukhd!)

For anyone still looking, the offer is still on at their site, for this and lots of other watches, so some great bargains to be had. (edited)
    Māsharu_Rou's avatar
Hey, what did you find you missed when using the Instinct over your 7x already, or what was the main drawbacks for you to return it?
  19. Msx98's avatar
In case anyone is wondering if this can be mounted to a bike mount. It can get the fenix 7 ones but for the standard 7 not the 7x. See pics.

Is that the paint coming off one of the screws , top right ?
  20. numberseventyfour's avatar
    Darn it. I bought one.
I’m going to have to stop looking at this site…
  21. Sulphur.Man's avatar
Tempting. I have the original Instinct Solar, and it's been fantastic. What more does this do for me....
    Msx98's avatar
Just do it for the flashlight. I couldn't do without it now. Every reviewer says the same.
  22. Craig_Pellow's avatar
TRL20 brings it down to £261.92.

    Doesn’t seem to work

I'm still grieving about my instinct solar turning off if I use the GPS button. But no other smart watch is tough enough for me
    Theo2019's avatar
Is it under warranty? Garmin is normally 2yrs and replace watches with no quibble
  24. Kazloav's avatar
Some of these Garmin watches are truly tempting, yet I was wondering, can a good Rugged GPS phone, with the options of apps/features...such as the ''CAT S75'' and with the inclusion of SOS, be a better choice?. I'm coming from the angle of indulging in some walking/hiking and need all safety bases covered. (edited)
  25. AndrewE's avatar
How would something like this compare to my apple watch 7?
    Z6999's avatar
Apple Watch Is an extension of your phone. A Garmin is good and proper activity tracker. It has the best trackers by far.
  26. TheTrick_Shot95's avatar
Really am debating this, would it be recommended for mountain biking, general strength training and running?

Was recently looking for a g shock and a fitness sort of watch separately but this seems to be a two in one!

    Any advice?
    GrabbyFeet's avatar
I use my OG instinct solar for mtb, trail run, road runs, strength training and the odd hike. It handles these well with the strength training being the weakest area imo. It pairs with sensors like speed and cadence too. The strength training you can manually add exercises, weights and reps afterwards afterwards but I tend to not track my workouts so much these days anyway as I just keep tabs on that stuff in my head or use fitnotes app. I will grab a couple of screenshots of the running and biking metrics if you like? Also it links straight to strava too once you connect accounts (edited)

    Save10 code now works
  28. Timmy_the_Tank's avatar
I like the monochrome display and I like the idea of not having to charge it if it gets enough sunlight.
Is it worth switching to from forerunner 945? I dont use mapping or music often if at all. I'm more interested in gaining/losing health related featues. Training readiness etc. does it work with all the ant devices that 945 connects to? Is anyone else in a similar boat? (edited)
    low_level_devel's avatar
Don’t know about the ant devices, but I bought a 255 and didn’t click with it (coming from Apple Watch 7). Bought an instinct 2 Solar and was wowed by it! Extra battery life, solar, mono display is actually really crisp and easy to read. It’s really cool.

    Rob_Samsung's avatar
Good luck on your next mission.
  30. rendeverance's avatar
I really want this, but 50mm case on a small wrist? Anyone have this with medium -small wrists that can take a pic? TIA
  31. Craig_ward's avatar
I noticed that the bottom has a glass cover instead of epoxy on the instinct 2 Solar , anybody had any issues with skin rashes as I suffer quite badly from Nickel and some other materials.

So far found I can only really wear the Apple Watch which is a pain as I prefer the battery and features of brands like Garmin. (edited)
    GrabbyFeet's avatar
I think a few people have issues but often it's caused by not cleaning the watch and letting sweat accumulate. Every day I give the watch a quick rinse in warm soapy water and don't wear it in the shower. I make sure my wrist is dry and the watch before putting it back on. A few minutes a day not wearing these won't affect the data much and I also know people who's straps are always falling apart but all my watches are on the original straps still. Obviously not saying this applies to you as you mentioned a nickel allergy but I thought it could be useful for others if getting a slightly itchy wrist
