In the days leading up to the official reveal of Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft has disseminated a series of cryptic clues across its websites, email marketing and social media.
This mysterious marketing campaign quickly caught the attention on internet and some people tried to solve what became known as “the riddle of the red hourglass.”
The starting point was an alphanumeric code S89N-029S seen in a promotional video showing a huge clock with red sand in Osaka. Fans quickly realized that these numbers corresponded to the positions of the letters of the alphabet, forming the word "Shinobis", the name for ninjas in Japanese.
But that was only the beginning. Other digital codes were discovered, including a series of two-digit numbers hidden on the Ubisoft website. By analyzing binary patterns, some Internet users deduced that these numbers referred to the year 1579, the date on which the historical figure of Yasuke, a black samurai of African origin, arrived in Japan.
The most determined went so far as to decode a poem from a Japanese character key stating that "time is fleeting, fragments are scattered across the network, the sand clock becomes the key to preservation, you should hurry".
After several days of investigation, the community finally managed to decipher the last clue by visiting assassinscreed.com/hou…ass, a code allowed to unlock the "Hourglass Trinket", a collectible item in the game Assassin's Creed Shadows upon release.
The code is: S89N-O29S-S1MU-R19S
Use it on the Assassins Creed website and you will unlock a reward to collect as soon as the game is released by connecting to your Ubisoft account.
As a reminder, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on November 15, 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Ubisoft Store / Epic Game Store).
