About ITVX

Launching in late 2022, ITVX will be the UK’s freshest streaming service, letting viewers stream new programme exclusives, with adverts, for free; ranging from premium dramas, documentaries, US series, comedy and reality shows to blockbuster films and much, much more. ITVX will be the first streaming service in the UK to offer viewers the flexibility to access free content with ads and ad-free paid subscription, all in one place. Paying subscribers will also have access to BritBox UK. ITVX will live stream must-watch events, from live sport to Love Island, as they are broadcast on ITV’s channels. ITVX will also offer an ever-changing host of exclusive themed channels in line with viewer preferences and popularity. These constantly evolving pop-up channels will give a scheduled experience through a streaming service, with viewers able to choose where in the schedule they join.

Update:

ITVX has announced the launch of a worldwide streaming-first British Sign Language (BSL) channel.

Omnibus episodes of soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street will be among ITV Signed’s offerings, as well as Cilla and Alan Carr’s Epic Gameshow.

Viewers will also be able to tune into dramas Vera and Lewis on the channel, which will solely feature signed programming.

ITVX launches world-first British Sign Language channel

When ITVX officially launches on 8 December, Deaf viewers will have access to what is a worldwide streaming first - a British Sign Language channel, solely featuring signed programming, which will include a range of shows like the Emmerdale and Coronation Street omnibus episodes, Cilla, Alan Carr’s Epic Gameshow, Vera, Lewis, and The Saint. The channel will be regularly updated and will evolve to include both recent and archive programming from a wide variety of genres.

ITVX will launch with a selection of 20 themed channels, which are designed to offer a lean-back experience of watching a scheduled channel, and these channels will appear in the ‘live’ section of the service, directly below ITV’s six existing channels (ITV1, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, ITVBe and CITV).

ITV's Director of Accessibility, David Padmore, said:

"We're committed to placing great accessibility at the heart of ITVX and our offering at launch represents significant progress on ITV Hub. Our ITV Signed Channel gives us a fantastic platform for showcasing our rich archive of signed programmes."

Teri Devine, Associate Director for Inclusion at RNID, said:

“Following the recognition of the British Sign Language (BSL) Act earlier this year, it is fantastic to see more and more industries and organisations become accessible to BSL users. We’re thrilled that ITV have considered the accessibility of BSL users for the launch of their new channel feature, making it easier for them to find new signed content. Building in accessibility from the start is important and should be the norm, and we look forward to seeing ITV expanding its access services across the remaining platforms. For support or information, visit RNID.org.uk

Accessibility is a core principle of ITV’s new streaming service, and teams across ITV have worked to ensure the brand, design and user interfaces are accessible and that they support assistive technology such as screen readers. ITV is committed to continuing to improve the inclusive design as ITVX evolves.

ITVX will offer over 10,000 hours of programming at launch, a huge increase on the volume of content on ITV Hub, and a big priority has been subtitling and audio-describing this rich selection of programming.

ITVX will now have subtitles for over 90% of on-demand programmes on every platform and device - from the mobile apps, through the main web browsers to all connected TVs and plug-in devices.

For live TV watched through ITVX, subtitles will be available to around 80% of viewers, watching through our mobile apps, web browsers and most connected TV devices, with work in progress to enable live subtitling via the remaining platforms, Freeview, YouView, Freesat and Chromecast.

Subtitles will also be available on all 20 themed channels on all platforms except Freeview, YouView, Freesat and Chromecast, at launch.

The remaining subtitling gaps will be resolved in the first half of 2023.

Audio description is available for around 20% of programmes on the platform at launch, including all new ITV drama, with platforms prioritised in consultation with the RNIB. At launch audio description works on the mobile apps, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Samsung TVs, Chromecast (iOS only) and Sky Glass. ITV teams are still working on browsers and the remaining connected TV platforms, and we hope to make AD available on these in the first half of 2023.

ITV is delighted to bring this world-first British Sign Language (BSL) channel to the service, and a top post-launch accessibility priority is to provide additional BSL content on demand.

My family member's Panasonic TV ITV Hub app stopped working because of this. Does anyone know of this new ITVX app will replace the old ITV Hub app? Will it still work?

Get them to buy an Amazon firestick or Roku device (around £30 during Black Friday ) as it will launch on those

Can easily block ads if anyone uses pi-hole or an ad blocking DNS service. Tried this morning and ads are still blocked on ITVX. Need to blacklist tom.itv.com and the ads stop completely.

I wish there was an IPTV with all the Freeview channels, my antenna is useless, but my broadband is spectacular. Any ideas anyone?
    Frank0854's avatar
I had the same problem with my antenna until I discovered Restore TV restoretv.uk/ give them a ring and tell them your getting interference on your tv. It's all free. If the filter they send you doesn't work ring them back and they'll send someone out to fix the problem. All free of charge.

    Can't complain if it's free.
    Fluffykins's avatar
Its not free. Companies pay to advertise. From where do you think a company gets its money to pay for advertising? From the price of its goods or services. Well, advertisers may not sell direct to you but follow the chain enough and us schmucks are at the bottom of the pile. Last time I looked, UK TV advertising revenue, divided by the number of UK house holds, came out to more or less the same as the licence fee but with one difference - it was the same level whether or not you had a TV.

And people thought the TV licence was unfair!
  7. ought's avatar
    Hopefully not too many adverts....

Use PiHole as suggested by or use one of the ad blocking DNS servers. See

Its just a shame that ITV Hub (and now "ITVX") have been deprecated on one of my main devices, due to the hardware not being up to the demands of their app for protection. Despite all of which I note that iPlayer and similar, all of which are "protected" manage to continue functioning. What is it about ITV's devs that means they cant write the code to work on all hardware?
    Jonwillis's avatar
As a software engineer, I can understand the reasoning. I still the recall the effort people put in to support internet explorer 6 when windows 7 was already the main operating system. There is a cost to supporting older hardware, but in some cases you don't want to as it limits what you can do. Android is alot like this, so many new features were added from 2011 onwards that you couldn't use because 90% of Android phones are still on Android version 3 from 2009. Even today there are issues in this area.

At some point you have to drop support so you can move on. Now with TVs that might be down to video encoding formats, but could also be annoying things like licensing agreements.

It's why I do advocate the use of media players over the inbuilt apps because smart TVs never stay smart forever. (edited)

Just what we need yet another streaming service to add to the 25 others out there regardless of it being free or not you'll still not find anything good to watch lol

Weirdly going with the same colour scheme as Amazon FreeVee free with ads service
    Mr.Nutts's avatar
This isn't additional. It replaces ITV Hub.
  10. CraigFox's avatar
I'm guessing you don't need a TV licence for this as on demand

As long as you are not watching live tv then they shouldn’t be an issue, when was the last time anyone came checking anyway 👀

For those annoying Ads, try setting DNS on your TV to one that blocks Ads. Certainly worked on the ITV app, not tried on this new app. Also see post below.

Anyone know how much they're charging for premium?

    It's £5.99/month or 12 months for £59.99

I can't see any discounts on that available anywhere, so at the mo I am going to pass...Netflix, Paramount, Disney, Prime...they all add up, and something has to give, so unless I can find this a bit cheaper, I am going to give it a miss...

    thanks

I watched a film the other day (Mother, Bong Joon Ho), and there were approx. 7 lots of ads during the two hour movie. It wasn’t much of a bother, but it wasn’t seemless which ads would play, took about 10 seconds to get going and at one point crashed the film. They also came at odd moments of the movie, like it would cut off a few seconds of a scene. Okay, so pretty annoying lol (this was on a LG TV app)
  19. johnnybgood's avatar
Any chance they might have content in 4K or 5.1 surround? I still don't understand why none of the typical services such as BBC iPlayer or Channel 4OD don't have 4K or 5.1. Amazon's freevee service has 4K on some things. Hell on 4OD until recently you were lucky to get anything more than standard definition.
    iainl7's avatar
There may not be much of it, but iPlayer does have some 4K HDR; the prestige drama like the SAS thing and Tokyo Vice, Attenborough and a few others. Though they use HLG for HDR, so it may depend on your TV supporting that.

ITV could save a lot of money by not having to pay for the use of TV transmitters and satellites. Sky TV are moving that way too. Once FTTP gets to 85% of the UK in 2027 then you can expect lots of talk about shutting down Over The Air TV.
  26. hillton's avatar
The platform will allow viewers to watch content for free in an advertising-funded tier or alternatively, pay for a subscription service that provides all that content ad-free and in addition provides thousands more hours of British boxsets from BritBox and other partners' content.

If this has broken the ITV app functionality on your smart TV like it has in our house and you don't want to pod out for a firestick with yet another remote control kicking about the place, the workaround we are using is to update to ITVX on smartphone and cast to the TV (we have a Chromecast Ultra)..

Hopefully there will be an update on our Hisense at some point fairly soon, we have been impressed with how long they have continued to keep on supporting the model that we've got, so fingers crossed.

It's a pain in the backside that the content providers can just break these apps up and down the country with no warning.

    dealicon's avatar
If you are watching LIVE programs that are telecasted on TV at the same time, then yes you need a TV licence irrespective of the channel. If you are watching catch-up or box sets, films, shows that you haven't recorded from the LIVE stream, then no license is needed. I am free from TV licence for the past 4 years using Netflix, Prime, ITV, All4 and other similar non UK content providers. I don't want to watch LIVE news anyway and am not a fan of BBC corporation. The only thing I miss is Live Sports. (edited)

Another quirk of this TV Licence rules is the following:

Say for example that last year you recorded something from a live tv broadcast, perhaps a single film or a series like Broadchurch for example.

You had paid for a licence and it was in force during that period you recorded stuff.

Then you decide that the state of the live tv programs broadcast is so abysmal that you object to having to pay £159 a year for the dross they put on.

So you tell the TV Licencing mob that you no longer need a licence (using their online form is easiest) as you are no longer going to watch LIVE TV or BBC iPlayer.

Then you decide to watch the recorded programs, and do so.

Then later on a TV "goon" comes round and asks if you watch live TV.

    You say no.

They then trap you by asking if you miss any of the films/series/whatever.

You, like a mug tell them that no, I can watch Broadchurch until the cows come home now as I recorded them WHEN I HAD A LICENCE.

To which end he makes a note of that and later you get a summons through the post for not having a TV Licence.

Unbelievably to most of us, watching stuff that was recorded BY YOU from the TV (and/or BBC iPlayer) is strictly forbidden by the rules IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A LICENCE TO COVER these live tv recordings WHEN YOU WANT TO WATCH IT.

So be aware, and do not let in a TV Licence inspector, or even talk to them.

See ChilliJonCarne for more (than you really want to keep hearing about) on this and all the other things around this annoying subject.

The sooner the Government gets on with removing the need for us to pay BBC for a licence, the better.

Rumour seems to be that the Government are considering putting the cost of a licence onto the local Council Rates (poll tax as some call it).

Errors an Omissions Excepted, "I am a man of straw", etc...
    Mr.Nutts's avatar
By this logic, you could record something when you don't have a license, and then attain a license and watch the recorded show without penalty, right?
