Why wouldn't you recommend this ereader?

Because of mixed user reviews, the main issue being the poor battery life.
There are a niche user group who love it though, mainly for the high quality 8 inch screen.

This is a good option IF you are set on an 8 inch screen size AND either a) want a Kobo, b) don't want to pay a lot more money for a 7.8 inch android device like a Boox, Bigme, or Meebook product, or c) can't wait for or afford the expected successor model (which will cost £250+). (edited)

Boox all day long despite price of the units

Boox are probably the best all-rounders but if you want a pure reader it's not worth the price imo. Reports of their after-sales support is also pretty concerning if you're spending that much money.

I'm holding out for a new libra, although I'm not sure, I all honesty, whether it'll seem that different, based on what a eReader is supposed to do.

    For me that's the point....

My 2016 Kobo Aura One is just as good at displaying eBooks as is my wife's Libra 2.
Yes it has "only" 8GB of storage and micro USB connection. But it has a stunning screen and does what is needed.
Unless you need BT, audio support and massive storages etc, I'm not overly a fan of the side buttons, then the latest and greatest might only offer small incremental differences.
Of course, for some, styluses and other things like note taking etc blur the lines of just reading an eBook, as does comic reading.

I had a kobo years ago when it went wrong they refused to admit it was there device at fault but luckily I bought the thing from W H smiths so was able to get my money back from them I doubt the company got any better when it comes to fully products

When it comes to the Kindle alternatives, many years ago I've had an eBook reader from... Barnes & Noble (Nook reader). And it was 'a bit' of hassle!

First thing, importing it from the US. Then, paying in dollars (it wasn't that simple many years ago!). Furthermore, when Amazon had nearly all the books, B&N was like 20% of that, so I had to sideload like 80%+ of the books I wanted. Also, any guarantee was potentially a PITa, as it requires to send it back to the US, which could be costly (fortunately, I didn't need that). Also, a baterry life was so-so - nothing special, but not a drama either.

There were probably some other small-ish issues as well, but I dint remember them now.

Anyway, after that experience I gave up with being so alt with my eBook reader and went for Kindle after all.

    But ofc, YMMV.

Can anyone recommend a large ereader? Don't care about WiFi or BT. Ok with micro usb as well. The screen size is what I am after, need to read a lot of tech books in pdf. Regular tablet is straining my eyes.

Kindle Scribe sounds like the only real option

Something else to factor in, the lookalike kindle (oasis) has been missing from the Amazon US store for the past 2 weeks and is rumoured discontinued.

Good deal for a new, button form factor e-reader, although personally not a fan of having the logo stamped on the front

    I want something which is:
    (a) a really good ereader
    (b) a really good device for taking notes.
    (c) a good size

Happy to pay top dollar for something which is really good.

    Recommendations gratefully received.

    A good size is personal preference - generally it's 7, 7.8, 10.3 and 13 inch screen.

There are also now colour editions of a lot of devices but importantly this decreases the whiteness of the display when the lights are turned off.

For a 10.3 inch the most popular and recent all-rounder is a Boox Note Air 2 Plus/3, or if you're happy with the Amazon ecosystem the Kindle scribe is a solid reader with added note taking.
I recommend listening to this guy on YT for reviews -

Still using an old 6" Kobo Glo but tempted to upgrade for a bigger, higher res screen. Tempted to go for this but the Libra 2 appeals more.

I ended up refunding mine, not overly impressed.
My wife's screen on the Libra 2 seemed much better than the Sage.

Interesting, but fair I guess. I don't have a Libra 2 to compare with but I ended up getting one of these too and I actually like it. I had tried the previous gen Forma 2nd hand which I didn't like at all (it was very slow and felt cheap) but I like the Sage and the screen looks good to me. I plan on keeping it for home use and taking advantage of library books, and I can take a smaller device (a Kindle Voyage) out and about. (edited)
