The trusted Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Rain Jacket uses 3-layer H2No™ Performance Standard technology and a PFC-free DWR finish (durable water-repellent coating that does not contain perfluorinated chemicals) for exceptional waterproof/breathable performance, all-day comfort and long-lasting waterproof durability.

Materials
H2No 3-Layer - Made up of water-repellent shell fabric, a waterproof and breathable membrane and an ultralight knit backer. The 3-layer construction also helps disperse the water vapour build-up by reducing drying time and minimizing the risk of water leaking through. Highly packable, feel comfortable next to the skin, and are built tough to withstand long-term exposure to extreme environments.

Features

  • Two-way-adjustable hood with a laminated visor rolls down and stows with a simplified cord-and-hook design
  • Microfleece-lined neck provides comfort and protects with a waterproof/breathable barrier
  • Snag-free centre-front zipper with external and internal storm flaps and zipper-garage chin guard
  • Two handwarmer pockets and venting pit zips with welted exterior storm flaps
  • Self-fabric hook-and-loop cuff closures and an adjustable drawcord hem seal out precipitation
  • Jacket self-stuffs into left handwarmer pocket with carabiner clip-in loop
  • Regular fit

A closer look
A tricot backer and a micro, fleeced lined neck offers next to skin comfort for those warm summer downpours.

An adjustable hood with laminated visor can easily roll up and stow with a simplified cord-and-hook design and pit zips offer ventilation without comprising on protection. Two hand warmer pockets are finished off with water-resistant zips, and this jacket even stows into the left-hand pocket for easy storage and transportation. Hook and loop cuffs and a drawcord hem help to seal out the weather.

Are these actually waterproof please? As I saw some Seven Layer jackets last week and the water literally beads on them - they’re 100% waterproof! Sick of buying jackets which claim to be waterproof, water resistant, watertight etc etc etc, but let water in! The Seven Layer ones are actually decent - slightly more expensive than this for a smock or something but do what they say, so just wondered about these Patagonia ones!

The water beading on the surface is just from the surface treatment (DWR or durable water repellent). This is effectively consumable and needs to be reapplied after a while. All it does is shed water from the surface, it doesn’t make it waterproof.

The actual waterproofness comes from a membrane within the jacket, which doesn’t let water pass through. That includes things like goretex or in this case h2no. Lots of cheap jackets just skip out on this, but just use DWR to give the appearance of waterproofing. You’ll see them listed as “water resistant” or something.

I think it’s worth spending a bit more money for the Granite Crest if you have it. However, the Torrentshell is a fantastic shell and in my opinion, the best cost to quality proposition in the market. At £100, it’s a no-brainer.

Do remember though, it’s just a shell. (edited)

I agree. Go to a store and see them if you can. Granite crest is superior and lighter and more packable. Its a good £80 or so more though

Great deal, love mine still keeps me bone dry on the dog walks and like the flexibility. Thin enough to wear on rainy days in the summer too with the vents open for some airflow.

Don't expect to use this alone in Autumn winter, as the name says it's a shell so layer up. I switch to a Patagonia Jackson Glacier in the winter, favourite coat ever!

Should you size up with Patagonia or are the fairly generous.

Any good thinking of buying it but think I might feel like a lollipop man

I have one & it is great - love Patagonia stuff anyway. It comes up a little large in men's but just had the woman's one delivered today from these guys & need to get her normal size.

Good price. But going to hold out until I see a colour I like.

I like and have a lot of Patagonia stuff but I don’t see the appeal or know why the torrent shell is so popular. It feels very cheap and flimsy even for £100. I’d rather pay more and the goretex ones from them or other brands. I got the arcteryx beta sl for £150 not long ago and that is far superior.

Although I see that these are now 3L so maybe they are better than the old ones I tried.  (edited)
