Toupret is brilliant for this kind of repair, can be picked up from screwfix

My house developed small cracks between skirting and wall in quite a few places as the paint job seem to just go over them together and then during winter the skirting moves slightly, is that normal?

Do I put this on or just paint over?

How do I know if a hairline crack is just the paint or the plaster? It's so fine I can't tell.

For that job, you would need decorators caulk. It comes in tubes and can be applied with a caulking gun. The difference between this and caulk is that caulk stays flexible, so any movement between the skirting and the wall means the gap (shouldn't ) open up again.

It's easy to apply. You just squirt it into the gap and go over it with a damp finger. Baby wipes are useful to get it off your hands. You can also wipe across it with a damp cloth, and it can be painted over.

Available from Amazon, Screwfix etc. Usually a couple of quid a tube (don't forget the gun though, they can be had for £5-10.

I would recommend the powdered filler.

If you keep the bag sealed, it will last for years and there is always some available when you need it.
The premixed filler in tubs will go off, so unless you use it all in one go, most of it gets thrown away.

Agree. Once I randomly grabbed one (pre mixed) when coming across and stocked it up in my garage think myself being very organised and pre planned.... Until 2-3years later, opened up to use the first time, the texture is not smooth anymore and my completed work absolutely looked yucky (couldn't be bothered to buy a new one)🤪
