As a Civil Engineer in the Utilies sector I purchased this product a few years ago. They aren't ideal for regular use as you need to be bent over double to use them and manhole covers are heavy. This said, in my role as a white collar professional these are handy to have in the car and on my person for site visits. Good quality product - a reasonable price. (edited)

Agree proced with caution with these as you will injure your back being so short stemmed attempting to lift manhole covers which are both heavy or jammed as they regularly are. (Use a hammer first to loosen manhole cover from frame)

Best ones are long stemmed versions if you can find them tool station/ screwfix50462141-eSsV8.jpg

Would these fit any manholes like the one down the high street next to the bank for example?

California has just banned the use of the term Manhole. They will be known as "maintenance holes".
