Every single deal with sweets, we get these moaning ninnies talking about teeth rotting and diabetes like they are the only people sensible in the world...

Look. Most people know how to look after themselves. They know how sugar works. They know what causes diabetes. You aren’t fountains of knowledge. You’re probably not even pillars of health yourselves. So instead of lecturing people, buy some jelly beans and cheer the hell up. Christ.

Thanks . Have ordered a tub. Will last me a while. (edited)

The readily available high sugar, high fat,low nutrition foods that are sold in bulk quantities for little money are playing a big part in this. Yes there's freedom of choice and I'm sure a lot of people will be very sensible about how many jelly beans they consume in one sitting, but if you see what I see every day you might have a different opinion.

So obviously you are a health worker possibly for the NHS or dentist and I applaud you if that’s the case. However having little jibes on deal threads is fairly pointless. My wife works for the NHS and she is happy for me to buy jelly beans as I balance my consumption and I’m fairly old so the damage is done! There’s an old saying which my Nan used to trot out from time to time which was “if you’ve got nothing good to say, say nothing”. It’s stood me in good stead most of my life. All the best to you, no malice intended (edited)

Maybe because low sugar and exercise = healthy bod. High sugar and no exercise = fat blob with higher risk of morbid obesity and diabetes

It's complex issue. Being overweight is a contributory factor to Diabetes, eating too much sugar can make you overweight. However it's not a guaranteed Diabetes sentence.

It is not free choice that is the issue but it is free services. When healthcare is "free", it is easier to ignore personal responsibility. Start charging at least something for it and most of the frivolous stuff will not clog the GP office. Start charging those who smoke a pack or more a day and there will be a financial motivation to give up smoking. Start charging those who get drunk and injure themselves, and Jan 1 will be less crowded in A&E. And charge those who cannot demonstrate they are full time UK residents and medical tourism will reduce.

Money, or the thought of losing it, is a far bigger motivator than anything else.

The jelly bean factory is based in Blanchardstown in Dublin. They produce jelly beans under a lot of other shop brands too.

Aldi and Lidl jelly beans are made by them. They are the EXACT SAME jelly beans and way way cheaper in those two stores. (edited)

No idea how it is obvious. All I am saying is completely "free" healthcare is also a big reason behind irresponsible choices. Nowhere did I suggest that we should swing to the other extreme where healthcare becomes unaffordable, as in the US. Something as low as £5 per visit, waived for those on low incomes, may be sufficient to dissuade people from using NHS resources for minor things. Life insurance premium is different for smokers and non smokers - why not the same for health services? Why should people making healthy choices fully subsidise those who don't?

You're intimating that people with low sugar exercise and people with high sugar don't.

    That's a bit silly.
