I purchased these (same code on site) some 8 years ago to make some steps and retaining wall. No idea what I was doing at the time and they have lasted well.

Only this year has the tops of them (the bit that I made face up all the time) started to blow and become uneven. The ones on the retaining wall are pretty manky at the rear but still have strength and integrity at the front two thirds. I reckon another year and they will need replacing. I have never treated them with anything.

    Maybe this will help someone.

Iv been looking at sleepers and In addition to some other comments about better value from a merchants, these are UC3 treated and google says they are not suitable for ground contact, whereas sleepers from a merchants will most likely be UC4 which is better

Still would last 20 years , quick cost of teak oil or similar you would be fine

As others have said - 8x4 inch are around £20 mark from builders these days. These are 6x4 - so if dimensions are suitable for you they are a good price, assuming they are not wonky. Like all timber I would be looking to select my own

Edit... Oops just noticed these are 1.2 lengths... Builders supply in 8x4 and 2.4M usually.... So unless you need the shorter lengths (would be cutting the 2.4's) I would look at your local suppliers (edited)

Newbie Gardner here; first time trying to landscape my own garden as budget friendly as possible but trying to purchase garden items that are also long lasting and won’t rot… Kindly can someone tell me if you want these to look high do you literally stack one on top of the other and use a long screw ? Or what type of boarders are long lasting? The picture here is what I’m aiming for - so a 2 plank look

    Yes you can do that.

Few options. It all depends on the situation.

    For laying:
    1) After digging a fairly shallow trench you can lay them on a full concrete bed once dry.
    2) on same trench compact gravel for drainage and leave 2-3 holes per sleeper for concrete. Then fix SS coach on the underside of them and level them whilst still wet
    3) drill them with a suitable size auger bit and fix them with long enough rebar rods.

Cheapest is not always the best value. However if it is just for bordering like in the photo then 3rd option is ok.

In any case a couple of good coats of creocote will definitely benefit them (before laying), as well as treating any cut ends.

I would never lay them straight on the ground. It takes nothing to spread sand/gravel mix and costs nothing.

I have a few sleepers in my garden, but being Russian agents they weren't too happy at being dipped in creosote.

These are tiny in length. Wickes and Band Q do these and the longer versions.
I don't know if you can still buy second hand railway sleepers, these used to be so soaked in oil, that they did not rot.
    Attic45's avatar
They were also soaked in human excrement and chemicals that would cause pets serious issues and human illness if you used as a vegetable patch and the chemicals leached into your lettuce.

Waste of time will only last a few year's

Do you know what types of boarders last longer ? I guess it’s the stone ones?

This is an ok price not amazing but ok I guess, based on the best price I can find for a similar 100x200x2400 @22 quid.

Anybody know a good or better source?
Another 500-600 quid on the bloody garden

try local merchants , or local fence supplier you can usually haggle a bit with them , £22 is a good price for those imo, i was paying over £30 couple of years ago when i needed some more to complete my garden , the first batch were about £20 3 years ago, so good the price has fallen

You thinking one or 2 high?.... How big LxW do you want it
  12. y-so-izi's avatar
Praying you find a straight piece. Click and collect they normally just chuck on whatever then you have to run around finding ones without splits, cracks, or bowed
  13. ChildishGazebo's avatar
Do these require treatment or staining?
  14. Sebastian_Kalinowski's avatar
get oak sleepers instead 35-40 quid 2.4 x 100x100 delivered , just check local FB Market. Will last forever without any treating.
    Bash_er's avatar
They might last longer, but certainly not forever. The ones I put in 15yrs ago are coming to the end of their useful life.

    They last forever in Poland.
