sorted byIt is something to do with a bulky order. Seems like you cannot buy over 20 bags in one go as it will be classified as bulky delivery (edited)
£100 for 1000L of graded, sterilised top soil is quite competitive against bulk bags.
I've had 800L bulk bags for £60ish that were clumpy, stoney, weed ridden garbage.
I did the same as you (new raised beds at home) and had a similar experience.
For me I think it was partly not adding enough farmyard manure, and partly the bizarre spring/summer we had (boiling in May, down to 10C regularly in June and July, hot again in August).
After a year of the worms getting in there you should be fine to go.
I'm trying a no-dig strategy and I've topped my new beds off in the last few weeks with big piles of homemade compost that I will let work its way into the soil over the coming weeks before I start planting out in April/May. (edited)
Thank you 3 very good comments Soil PH, manure & adverse weather.
I did add 30% compost to 70% soil knowing it was sterile as compost only feeds plants for around 3-4 months. Maybe I should have fed plants after 3 months to boost growth.
What I did not mention was I filled the base with rotten logs, broken twigs and rotted compost underneath.
although looking back, my strawberries loved my new beds and flourished with good yields and new runners.
I will still buy a few top up bags and mix with soil from another part of the garden to populate bugs.
Thank you All for the helpful advice, Wickes here I come tomorrow.
You could use it but mix with some sand. Depending on lawn size you’ll be better off with a bulk bag delivery. You’ll be surprised how much you get through. I did mine last year and used 8 tons of top soil on a 260ft lawn
I am based in London, houses here are the size of shoe box, so gardens are also small. I can only imagine you have a golf course behind your house so yeah, use bulky bags
Wait till there is no risk of frost. Would do it in Mid April myself.
Ex-allotment owner for 12 years so know a bit about preparing gardens and feeding rotted veg
back to feed the land.......you know the drill.
any advice from the wise about kick start new soil
Yes you can buy other cheaper stuff, but this one is actually decent and not full of pebbles and grit.

Yeah fair shout. I prefer to use a trailer
Our house is a bit awkwardly located for big trucks so been seeking an option for top soil that didn't involve a massive truck...
Are you trade or not?? I purchased 20 bags, some compost and bits and bobs, and my delivery was free, not sure why yours is £30. (edited)
Maybe it is the actual ph of this soil a problem for your plants?
Sterile soil is not great by itself, as you actually need all the bugs to help plants grow
I'd mix in 30% compost or manure, or just normal soil from the garden to get it going, and any worms you can find.
Im thinking the same really, its a bit uneven (In terms over coverage and 'bumps and dips) thinking I can get some of this, spread it around a bit, add a bit of seed...... Job done....?
Best bet is to order in-store and let them know so they can load it onto a van.
I’d say about 40.
Please be aware that If your order weighs over 0.75 tonnes it will incur a Big and Bulky delivery charge of £30 as it will be delivered by a HiAB carrier.
So you have to order less bags than a 750kg/ ideally 28 bags as you will benefit from the discount 4 for £10.
Free delivery from 75, so on top of 28 bags you will need to add some goods to have free delivery.
Good luck.

Thanks SebK - I did read all that previously before posting but what confused me was that when I went over 28 bags it wasn't even giving me the option of £30 bulk delivery.
Anyway, I've now bought lots (x4) stuff I don't need just to get free delivery! Thanks again for your post else I wouldn't have got this!
This soil is without lime, that's why Ph is at that level. Always was at that level. Once you start to watering your lawn with hard water it will became more alkaline.
Hello. To work out how much you need simply multiply Lenght × Width × Depth. This way you will find out how many cubic m (m3) you will need.
As a general rule, a tonne of a standard topsoil equals approximately 0.67m3. Divide the cubic metres required by 0.67 to give you the tonnage.
The recommended depth of imported topsoil required will depend on the site, the existing soil and what you are going to use the area for. In new properties the soil is often shallow and poor quality, therefore importing the full recommended depth of topsoil may be required. If the soil structure is poor, incorporating a soil improver may be the best option. If your existing soil is reasonably good quality, a shallower layer of new topsoil may be all that’s required to bring it up the required depth or assist with providing a level surface and good tilth.
The recommended depth of topsoil for creating lawns from turf or seed is 100 to 150mm. would be nice to actually see the area if possible. Do you have any photo?
In your situation every extra cm (depth) will be 1 bulk bag of topsoil. So in your situation 3cm means roughly 3 bulk bags, 5cm means 5 bulk bags, 8 means 8 bulk bags and so on. Considering lawn is nice and level.
5 for 10 it's very rare. You might just pop in to local Wickes and chat to Manager as he might offer you a discount.
I would say that your lawn it is in good shape. I cannot see puddles of water, so your lawn it is not waterlogged which is good.
Correct me if I am wrong but some of this damage appears like it was caused by items standing on the lawn for some time.
3cm of topsoil by the photos would be sufficient. Obviously you do not want to go higher than existing slabs.
Adding more topsoil will also require to removing existing soil, extra waste means it will cost you more, unless ofc you want your lawn to be higher than slabs?
Yellow grass means either improper fertilising (lack of nitrogen, and iron) or lack of water. Quite few weeds require some weed killer first.
The amount of trees means that there is a shady area, so I if you did not use it, you might get shady area grass mix (perenial ryegrass and fescue)
Try again. How many bags are you trying to add to the basket?
Any luck?
Not me...
Call the store and ask if you can collect.
I am buying it to level my lawn as it is bumpy after winter. If you can wait you might get 5 for £10. But I will buy it today. Free delivery over £75. If you are trade you can use tradepro voucher for extra savings.
Perhaps but you must use a wheelbarrow. I always find bags much better, even though more expensive. Easier to carry. If you in a terraced house do not recommend bulky bags. (edited)
You are absolutely right, Sir.
