Stripped my washing machine at the weekend to replace the drum bearings. Didn't see any detergent residue (only use washing powder) just some scale on the outer tub/element and a bit of mould on the door seal.

All the ingredients in this apart from Hexyl Cinnamal (perfume) are already in most washing powders, Vanish Oxy white is an oxygen based bleaching agent if theres non in the powder.

Dont use liquid detergents or fabric conditioners and do a boil wash once a month with acid based descaler e.g. amazon.co.uk/Dri…276

I used Kilrock blast away mould gel on the door seal btw and that worked a treat for the mould. (edited)

I now drain the machine after each wash using the flexible pipe at the bottom. If the water is dirty I run an empty rinse cycle.I used to run a bottle of white vinegar through it but gave up because it loosened the deposits so they ended up on the clothes.Be interested to see the state of the heater now... certainly no smell anymore

If my machine was that crusty I'd probs manually fill the bottom of tub, (below the seal, of course) with the hot water and acid and leave it overnight. It takes a fair while to completely disolve the limescale into the solution. I have a glass kettle & usually overnight that with dilute lemon juice. All deposits gone by morning.

Since I got my new machine, I leave the door a little open after washing, I think the mold maybe due to too much moisture being trapped in, and have started to do a quick wash with half a bottle of white vinegar once a week, not sure if it's doing anything but no mold yet and it's been 6 months. Same re. leaving the door open the mould on mine was under a lip not easily spotted but I had the machine in bits. I prefer citric acid re. no smell. Used to get it super cheap in Wilko but they shut the one near me.

    These are carpet cleaners..

    Let me explain.
Yes, they are carpet cleaners, but look at first two.
One on Amazon and one in Asda. Same price, but looking at the hotness I think people prefer amazon over Asda.
So even though I knew its same price at Asda for this product, I choose to post amazon deal.
    Hope this make sense now.

Powder detergents are supposed to be best for avoiding residue build up.

Are the pods not any good for the machine then?

Did a decent amount of research, basically turns out it's not possible to get the detergents that clean the machine in a pod. Stick to the powder. Also try not to use softener, there's no real need it might take time to break the habit, just try without here and there. Also don't need much powder either basically put less than advised.

Edit: might as well throw some other stuff in: like above leave door open after a wash, same with detergent draw.

Do a hot wash once a month, e.g. with towels/empty. I don't use any detergent on this wash, towels don't need it. (edited)

I’ve always used conditioner. Will be hard to break this Habit. I recently had a lot of vouchers for fairy non bio pods so need to use them up first. I probably will stick to powder after I’ve used the pods all up.

In fact, the bottom of the tub had lots of slimy residue too, which was very difficult to remove through the small hole for the heater. Using the drain setting always leaves 500ml of water in there, hence manually draining. It's a pretty poor design really, not completely emptying.... leaving the heater soaking in water isn't good either

Leaving the heater soaking in water wont harm it, its basically a kettle element. If you read my earlier threads you'll see I've already advised against liquid detergents and fabric conditioners. Take my advice & you wont need to mess about doing manual draining, they all harbour residual water. (edited)
