I'm always wary of companies I have never heard of wanting a lot of personal information and especially when they employ "hurry" tactics to get you to sign up before their offer expires...

I would suggest looking carefully at the company before considering using them if you really need this...

Hopefully the majority already have a driving licence or passport that would serve the same purpose, but for those that don't have those things just take a minute to check out who you are signing up with and what information they need..

    DYOR but forums.moneysavingexpert.com/dis…cam

The whole thing sounded a bit 1984ish to me, but it could be legit, although the MSE discussion does suggest it could be a bit of a waste of time getting one as no-one seems to accept them... As I say do your own research but be careful with who you give your personal information freely too... (edited)

Good point that it uses less info than a driving license, it's much easier for the person checking a driving license to know where you live.

    Nice spot. Thanks OP.

Worth noting these cards have a 3 year validity period.

Found this on Wikipedia- CitizenCard was founded in 1999 and is governed by a board of directors from the Camelot Group, The Co-operative Group, Experian, Ladbrokes, the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) and the Tobacco Manufacturers' Association. Andrew Chevis has been the CEO since the scheme was launched.

    One person's review on trustpilot
It might me everything you say but it doesn’t mean any of the banks or hotels I have been to accept it. Actually going showing it and being told they don’t accept it. Banks I have been to are Barclays hsbc. Santander nationwide and others. My library doesn’t EE shop doesn’t premiere inn doesn’t Drayton manor hotel doesn’t. Vodaphone shop doesn’t and several other places doesn’t so I know it’s not widely accepted like the other people who feel cheated. The only accommodation I could get was YHA no other place in London, York or Birmingham would accept it. Please stop using the standard line. Before buying look up and see who accepts it most places I was asked what’s that as they had never heard of it. Buyer beware plus expect to wait weeks or months to get it don’t bother paying more to get it quicker doesn’t mean a thing. Something will happen also wait days for replies to emails as it’s the only way to contact them. Good place to look is student groups as they get these often to find them useless. Also I have the app but these places don’t trust my word that it’s not a fake app. Widely accepted my eye. Thanks

    Sounds great (edited)

Perhaps the reviewer should have looked into what they were actually purchasing? People seem to think these are ID cards when they aren't PASS is a proof of age scheme. The clue is in what it says at the top of the card "PASS Proof of Age Card"

Wearing my tin hat and president of conspiracy com but this seems suspiciously like in the USA where we are heading towards Being forced to carry ID cards and produce them to any Tom Dick or Harry who asks for it .
    1984 seems closer every day.
Anything free is always a red flag to me
    Berlin2's avatar
It’s actually crazy that anyone would sign up to this ID Card. Why give away your information to get one of these things? I refuse to carry any such identifying material let alone consenting to sharing my information of my own volition. 1984 I tell you.

better off getting a passport or provisional licence
    Gareth79's avatar
That costs money, and not everybody is able to get a provisional licence.
  8. 77andyb's avatar
My younger brother had one of these. A lot of pubs didn't know what it was or said they didn't accept them as they were too easily forged. This was a good few years back though so things might have changed. Daughter uses her provisional driving licence for ID and has never had any trouble. Better than taking her passport out with her on a night out that's for sure.
    jaibaby's avatar
They show the "Pass" hologram - anywhere asking for ID should accept it. My daughter opted for one of these as her old passport had expired and we haven't got anyone who could verify her - no issues with it and cheaper when you compare it as she probably won't need ID to prove she's over 18 in a few years.

They now have a QR code on the back which bar staff / bouncers / retailers can scan to check the info and picture on the card is correct.
  9. deleted2679383's avatar
Tried using one of these as ID for a while back in the day. No one ever accepted it as genuine ID. Pretty useless.
  10. SPLDan's avatar
Do not get one of these. I got one to use on nights out so I don’t lose my driving license and pubs and nightclubs will not accept it. I was rejected entry into a nightclub because they believe they are easy to fake and aren’t familiar with them. You’re better off sticking to a passport/driving license

Years ago they came into school and issued "Connexions Cards" with the PASS logo on. I remember some classmates realising they didn't check anything when you gave them the details so went back in the queue and got another issued with and 18+ DOB! Just found mine I see they spelt my surname wrong!

Seems the whole thing was a bit of a Public-Private Partnership disaster (with a budget of £109million!)
    en.wikipedia.org/wik…ard

It could have paid for more than 3,300 new teachers, 250,000 laptop computers or replenished understocked school libraries with 10 million new text books.
Instead, £100 million of public money has been wasted on a reward card scheme, intended to encourage teenagers to stay on at school, which has been officially evaluated as a flop.
Ministers decided last week to cut their losses and axe the Connexions Card - but not before it has earned Capita, the private company that runs it, more than £66 million.

The word "scam" used very loosely in that thread, and the motive for using that word was resolved in the last post.
  14. Arvind0007's avatar
A legit ID card should normally come from a government institution, not a private company. Anyone can question its validity.
    jordanc93's avatar
It's not an ID card people need to actually read into what the PASS scheme is. These cards are issued under the PASS scheme which is a proof of age scheme it allows you to prove how old you are to a retailer or pub it's also backed by the Home Office.
  15. tdtowell's avatar
Jesus everyone seems a little riled over these… they’re just a cheaper and more private proof of ID than a full drivers license! Young people need ID more than ever to get served, and these have far less personal data on them than driving licenses. Trouble is many establishments don’t recognise them despite them being government endorsed - this is probably a scheme to boost uptake for that reason.
    DealJourno's avatar
But you have to give away far more personal data than these display to get one. I wouldn't bother.
  16. Kai_Kinder's avatar
Had one of these 12 years ago....

Same people then were supposed to accept it as they do now....

Literally NO ONE accepted the damn thing, it also snapped in half after being in my wallet for 8 months....

One would hope to assume things should be different this long on

I worked in hospitality for 15 years, none of them accepted them. Only provisional and passports
  17. Alex33.5's avatar
    Citizen card.
Even saying it out loud sounds somewhat dodgy, I've already got a couple of passports & a drivers license - if you got theses, you really don't need a "citizen card"

    Haven't voted either way! (edited)
    Bawlache's avatar
These have been around for a few decades, how have you never heard of them?
  18. i_need_bargains's avatar
Never heard of it and chances are many of those working for intuitions who supposedly recognise it wouldn't have either. I say this because of the many times I've been asked for proof of identity never have I been asked to show a citizen card. Not sure it's worth handing over your personal details to a 3rd party private organisation like this. Secondly if there's an age restriction wouldn't those obtaining it that are outside that restriction make it invalid anyway ? (edited)
    jordanc93's avatar
Why would they ask you to show a Citizen Card? it's a PASS Card all the supermarkets and major retailers have training for them and are told to accept them. Citizen Card is one of the longest running providers of the PASS scheme and if you look into PASS they audit scheme providers every 2 years to ensure they are fully compliant with the scheme.

it never ceases to amaze me how stuff like this has the power to turn overly keen shoppers, ready to give away sensible data for a £5 voucher or the chance to win your dream holiday, into overzealous conspiracy activists.
    deleted236761's avatar
What like loyalty scheme card holders, you mean? Or Amazon Prime customers? Netfix, Sky or Spotify customers? Just open your wallet or purse and look at them all and then close them. There's so much of it you couldn't list it all.
  26. toomanychoices's avatar
Almost got excited there. Until I read the under 24s bit.

CaptainCrunch, you said, a tad sarcastically, about doing this rather than get a passport or driving licence. Why would I want a driving licence when I can't drive or a passport if I'm not going anywhere?
Pretty expensive way of trying to prove who I am. Even allowing for the fact that it is incredibly difficult to prove who I am without either of those things, I'm not going to waste money of either item just for that.
    morty's avatar
This is for young people that is why to show evidence of age.

If you have no photo evidence of who you are you will find in future you run into problems.

I had not needed to have any support from bank since setting the account up over 30 years ago and now did it required photo ID this meant I had to pay to renew my passport.

Some banks do this when switching to mobile app as well.(this is another thing they are forcing people to use)
  27. Mother_Plucker's avatar
Not everywhere accepts these due to fakes but its well worth having if theyre free as its another form of ID
    Derpsauce's avatar
This is correct, the newer cards used have a chip in to verify the data along with an app to verify the chip, its still not widely accepted even with the sia backing.

I have used citizen card for years. They're accepted in many venues and for airtravel within the UK if you don't want to get a full passport. Like others have said it is always good to do your own research. But I have never had any sort of issues with this company or when using my card as official ID.

Great for people who just turned 18 and want to buy some drink in Tesco or go to the local pub

Been using mine for years without issue. Doesnt work in basically any night club or some higher tier establishments however.

Useful for those with only a passport and dont wanna risk taking it out all the time like myself (edited)
  34. t0n1b's avatar
Technically, these aren't legal, although they may be useful to show proof of age in some places. The Government scrapped Identity Cards in 2011 and their website states that you should use a Passport or Drivers Licence for any identification purposes.
    jordanc93's avatar
The pass hologram scheme was never intended to be a proof of ID scheme it's meant to be a proof of age scheme. The scheme is also backed by the home office and is also specifically recognised under the Government’s Guidance to the The Licensing Act For The Sale Of Alcohol. PASS have also bene working with the SIA to get door staff to recongise and accept the cards.

What a joke that application is their is more questions than a 10 year passport application i tried it 3 times then gave up its easier to get into buckingham palace or the houses of parliment. (edited)
    Derpsauce's avatar
Back before they did yoti you needed to have someone of standing to verify your identity it was a real Ballache trying to get someone to verify you.

By standing I mean a doctor, police constable, lawyer, solicitor ect. (edited)
  36. LaurenceGough's avatar
Why are we still using physical plastic cards? We could easily do this via an app... Less to carry, less waste, less to lose.
    Derpsauce's avatar
They do offer you one via their app you can use the app or physical id card.
  37. CursedNaruto's avatar
Apart from the fools in charge of IDing people didn't know about this so I was barred from entering an establishment which wouldn't be that bad but it was my very 1st night out and I was a step behind my group who had already entered so out in the rain for over an hour waiting for my brother to come out.
