It's also worth everyone checking if you're owed money on clowncil tax. Read something recently on MSE that many clowncils have overcharged.
Unfortunately, this deal has expired 30 January 2023.

- Carlisle City Council free every weekend and bank holiday, and free after 3pm every Thursday on the run up to Christmas.Same in Wigan pal
- Worcester has scrapped free parking but are having free bus service all day on the 10th December. Crowngate Shopping Center is only £1 overnight from 5pm to 9am and on Sundays & Bank Holidays it's only £1 all day every week of the year! That's a decent price.Come and visit lovely Malvern where parking is free every day from 3pm to 11pm. From 1st to the 24th December.
malvernhills.gov.uk/new…ers - Really wish the councils would stop doing this and subsidize bus or other public transport instead.
It's been shown over and over again that free parking increases traffic, congestion and typically pollution, (and therefore often actively works against the principle it is trying to acheieve as people get stuck in traffic , give up, and then shop online instead) and is a regressive approach, whereas cheaper public transport does the opposite.
The High Cost of Free Parking - Wikipedia
The high cost of free parking - YouTube (edited)What a load of Tosh. The High Cost of free parking is an American book and does not apply over here. What causes traffic congestion and pollution is halving the size of the roads with bus lanes and cycle lanes, further aggravated by LTNs and flower pots blocking roads that used to be free flowing.
Parking charges dissuade people from going into Town Centers and causes High Street shops to shut down. (edited) - Not go to jail..Roll some dice or pay 50 quid to get out right?

Two hours free parking in Wakefield town centre in selected carparks.
Just remember you still need to get a ticket from the machine to display. Thanks for the heads-up re: Wakefield.
And, your helpful info + reminder about still getting a machine ticket - Hull is also doing the same for Saturdays & Sundays at specific sites as well as subsidised bus travel into the city centre.
hullccnews.co.uk/30/…ng/ (edited) - Weymouth's free today in council owned car parks! Shop Weymouth!
- Sundays free at Southend, not on street parking though
- All parking should be free. It is just another revenue generating con to fleece motorists! What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. Why should other people subsidise you dropping off your private car somewhere
- [deleted]Same!
- London?Sadiq says no
- My monopoly has this free parking all year round, cold
- Great for the councils that allow it but my local BCP Council (dodgiest council in the UK) has now cancelled free parkingI concur.
- Should always be free
Pay road tax mot and car insurance (edited)And council tax - Absolutely ridiculous and completely pointless - one of the things I absolutely detest about this country - en.m.wikipedia.org/wik…ing (edited)And yet your chosen Wiki is about an American Planning Book, nothing to do with the UK.
Do better next time - our borough council have gone for free bus travel which is a great idea
- Meanwhile my local coincil keeps charging more and offering less
- Nothing in Nottingham and surrounding areas, no surprise there. All they do is increase prices and rob us in Notts
- Since when is otley in leeds? A joke xI don’t understand the joke. Not heard of Otley.
- Great pic chosen for the post, also great post. Heated
- Clay cross near Chesterfield Derbyshire has free parking ALL YEAR ROUND they know how to look after their shopping motorists, and plenty of variety shop wise !!!
- Of course there’s none in Manchester lolYou’ll have to stick to the bargain £3 an hour private car parks!
- Zero chance of Wandsworth offering anything free. But my annual council tax bill is still under £1000 for D, so not complaining.
- Anywhere offering free bus or train fares? Owning a car is absolutely not money-saving.It is time saving though, and time is money for some of us.
- One day down here in Cornwall, the scrooges, could be a boom for local shops if it was free all month.
People will just continue to buy online or shop out of town (edited) - Think of all the charity shops you can visit at some of these locations, such a shame how many High Streets have been reduced to the same shops over the years.
- That really makes up for being ripped off left right and centre by the establishment
- oh free parking now they need us eh?
- Very useful thank you
- Awesome thread, thanks!
- Great bit of work that OP
- Great post, no wheres my £200 for passing GO
- Great effort. Heat.
