It's also worth everyone checking if you're owed money on clowncil tax. Read something recently on MSE that many clowncils have overcharged.

Pretty sure mine know how to do it so they get away with it and we get nothing back

Carlisle City Council free every weekend and bank holiday, and free after 3pm every Thursday on the run up to Christmas.

    Same in Wigan pal

Worcester has scrapped free parking but are having free bus service all day on the 10th December. Crowngate Shopping Center is only £1 overnight from 5pm to 9am and on Sundays & Bank Holidays it's only £1 all day every week of the year! That's a decent price.

Come and visit lovely Malvern where parking is free every day from 3pm to 11pm. From 1st to the 24th December.

Really wish the councils would stop doing this and subsidize bus or other public transport instead.
It's been shown over and over again that free parking increases traffic, congestion and typically pollution, (and therefore often actively works against the principle it is trying to acheieve as people get stuck in traffic , give up, and then shop online instead) and is a regressive approach, whereas cheaper public transport does the opposite.

What a load of Tosh. The High Cost of free parking is an American book and does not apply over here. What causes traffic congestion and pollution is halving the size of the roads with bus lanes and cycle lanes, further aggravated by LTNs and flower pots blocking roads that used to be free flowing.
Parking charges dissuade people from going into Town Centers and causes High Street shops to shut down. (edited)

Two hours free parking in Wakefield town centre in selected carparks.
Just remember you still need to get a ticket from the machine to display.

Thanks for the heads-up re: Wakefield.

And, your helpful info + reminder about still getting a machine ticket

Hull is also doing the same for Saturdays & Sundays at specific sites as well as subsidised bus travel into the city centre.

  15. Proveright's avatar
All parking should be free. It is just another revenue generating con to fleece motorists!
    AleF's avatar
What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say. Why should other people subsidise you dropping off your private car somewhere

Zero chance of Wandsworth offering anything free. But my annual council tax bill is still under £1000 for D, so not complaining.
  30. specialized's avatar
Anywhere offering free bus or train fares? Owning a car is absolutely not money-saving.
    Chuck.Norris's avatar
It is time saving though, and time is money for some of us.

One day down here in Cornwall, the scrooges, could be a boom for local shops if it was free all month.

People will just continue to buy online or shop out of town (edited)
  32. AtTheBridgePod's avatar
Think of all the charity shops you can visit at some of these locations, such a shame how many High Streets have been reduced to the same shops over the years.
  33. Stencho's avatar
