About this deal

This deal is expired. Here are some options that might interest you:

If you take out the 3 month trial of Country Walking magazine (£0.99), it'll give you 50% off an annual OS app subscription. The OS subscription is currently 30% off online so you can get an annual subscription for £10.14.

The guide is here but basically, sign up to the magazine, email the address on the link with your "subscriber number" and in a day or two, they email you a 50% off code to use on the OS website. A bit convoluted but it saves about a tenner.

Good deal but terrible app. On top of generally being slow, unintuitive and expensive it has a few major flaws:

    * No scale rule. You have to eyeball the grid squares to work out how far away things are.

    * Won't orientate the map using phone compass. It can show the compass on screen, it just won't use it.

    * Doesn't use compass for direction. Right now the OS app is telling me I'm pointing due north according to the compass and SW according to the arrow.

I didn’t know this. Any better alternatives?

Great find! I just forgot to cancel.auto renew and got charged for another year, but that was at the price of £23.99 which was last year's price. In previous offers the subscriptions have stacked so maybe this might work too?

I love CW magazine which I read on the Press Reader app from my local library

If you purchase the deal on your account and you've already got a subscription, it just tags it on to the end of your current subscription if that makes sense.

My current subscription expires on 9/2/23. I used the deal today and a 9/2/23 - 9/2/24 subscription is on my account now

Probably worth mentioning that there is also £5 cashback from TCB. Assuming you can use this with it.

What does anyone think of OSMand app.

I have used this for years and found it really good for the most part. I have found it to be occasionally out of date (leading to paths not existing) but for the most part it's been great. I added all of my local paths to it. I find it great for offline use, as you can turn data off and get a couple of days battery life from your phone.

For those too cheap to pay (like me), Organic Maps on android is an okay alternative for storing offline maps. I used that to import walking routes off various websites and seemed to work well. The app let's you click on waypoints and shows a little real-time arrow that points you in the right direction. Useful when you hit unmarked junctions. (edited)

Just checked out their trust pilot.... I think that's the worst I've ever seen. Looks like most people cancel by using PayPal to cancel rather than from the actual site. Beware!

Edit - trust pilot for greatmagazines not OS maps (edited)

Does look poor, glad I used a starling virtual card now

Just tried to cancel subscription and been told it’s a minimum of 12 months! Might not be the best deal ever brought.
    Eggface5's avatar
Just an update - they replied a week later and just cancelled the whole thing without any problems. They even refunded me the 99p which I didn't ask for.

Declare your credit card lost/stolen and your card will be cancelled straight away; legally no more payments can be taken from it. Your credit card company will issue you with a new card and number.

The Magazine Subscription will have no means to take payment and will cancel your subscription.

This subscription is worth 3 times this for snap to path. Massive massive timesaver. Have had it since very shortly after it started and have never considered cancelling my subscription.

At this price it's a no brainer.

Yeah it's great. Don't get me wrong, it could be a load better but for what it does and the quality of OS maps it's a really great piece of kit. I mainly use it for route planning and the ability to export the gpx file is brilliant

I bought this years ago from the playstore. One off cost. Not a serious walker so I can't really compare features but it uses the UK OS maps from Bing and you can pull down for offline use. Works for me.

"BackCountry Navigator TOPO GPS", they also do a newer subs XE version.

Yes exactly the cost is marginally higher but one off. The zoom in quality is a bit worse but it’s usable so nothing to complain really.

I discovered this app recently, been really good for discovering new footpaths and running routes, an OS map in your pocket is really handy!
  13. Ehoman's avatar
This was indeed a bit of a pain to do, but it has worked!

I’ve used their OSMaps app to walk the coast to coast without issues in the past, and it surpasses all other walking apps I’ve had before (including the paid ones).

My favourite part of this is their option to follow routes. I can go to any location and do a circular without having to prepare in advance.

    Voted hot from me!

Is there anything on the Country Walking Magazines website that mentions the 99p is actually a 3 month trial period? I see the first 3 months are priced at a discount at 99p but I didnt see anything where its a 3 month trial period.

I sent the email to request the OS Map code and received the code about 2 days later so they were pretty quick on providing that. If I do cancel I will need to reference distance selling rules rather than mentioning trial periods.

Another free option on Android for anyone interested is ''Maverick", which I've been using for years.

Personally I prefer physical maps for planning so always add to my paper OS collection when going somewhere new but you can't beat an app for walking/cycling.

Got a weird issue with mine that has only just appeared. When using OS maps I get crazy battery drain. It didn't used to be like this. It says the screen is the big battery drain, but the screen is off for most of the time with OSM running in the background. Xiaomi Mi 11.

I had this with a samsung. I thought it might be related to being in poor signal area and the app trying to use the maps online. I now try to make sure I have maps downloaded for offline use and turn data and wifi off when walking. This has made a massive difference.

I did this at the start of the month as my subscription with OS with up for renewal. So worth it.

Great deal, I just cancelled my auto-renew yesterday so great timing. Possible £1.05 TCB for trial subscription too.

Great deal magazine subscription alone wort cost plus added voucher

Does anybody know if the "subscriber number" is the same as "Customer No."?
As customer No. is all I can see in the CW order confirmation e-mail
    craigbelperbrown's avatar
I’m wondering the same. Only had the one email nothing saying subscriber number yet.
  22. wilber's avatar
Any idea if it's easy to cancel the trial subs?
    Eggface5's avatar
I can't seem to find a button for it. I've used the contact form to ask to cancel. Which has the option for "cancel trial subscription". Ill let you know what they say but says it may take 2 days.
  23. StevenA2000_uk's avatar
Best £10.14 spent this year. I use the OS Maps quite a bit out walking and hill climbing so this deal is the one to beat for 2023!

Congratulations op for a cracking first deal.

I'm all set up now. Now to find my walking boots
  25. Eggface5's avatar
Also found this. But I emailed them via the contact form on their website saying please cancel my trial. Took a week but they cancelled and even refunded me my 99p which I didn't ask for.

It's annoying as you should be able to cancel on the my account section. But was relatively easy and ok experience

Worst case, use a 1 time card?

The are a complete and utter shower. Two emails received within minutes of one another:

"I am sorry to read you are thinking to cancel your subscription.

    "

    The second one:

"I am sorry to read you wish to cancel your subscription.

Your subscription is paid for on continuous card payment. I have arranged for this to be cancelled so that no further payments are claimed. Your refund will return back to the same issuing card within 3-5 working days.

May I take this opportunity to thank you for your support of the magazine.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for any further assistance."

Apparently from the same customer service account.

Several email exchanges for me and they have downright refused to cancel my subscription, despite their own wording in their confirmation email statjng that there is a 14 day cooling off period for cancellations. However I just called their phone line and they cancelled no questions asked.
