It’s ok. 5500U is quite an old CPU now based on the dated Zen 2 architecture despite the name and RAM is soldered.

Both CPUs the 5500U and the 5600U were released on the exact same day 2 years ago, nearly to the day. They were designed to be misleading in that the 5500U was Zen 2 based and the 5600U was Zen 3 based, just typical of AMD these days. As for performance, there's probs about 10% in it, so nothing huge, but you'll pay the extra for the 5600U, so you pays your money as they say. This is no bargain and is a typical price for a 5500U machine, which is slower than a 4500U btw also.... They often drop below this level. For everyday use and a bit of light gaming, they are fine. As someone said, the 12th Gen Intel is actually a 6 core SKU these days and is decent, so if you can find one, it'll beat the pants off these budget Ryzens. 1215U I think is the Alderlake one to look out for.

Can the Ram be upgraded? Is there a spare slot and what's maximum extra ram I can ad?
    plewis00's avatar
It’s soldered with no slots. That’s the biggest problem with this deal.

The Lenovo V range = TN panel, I'd avoid.

This was £369 on this site in October. Have laptops, like everything else, gone up in price in general?

I am really wanting a new laptop with 16 gb ram and 512gb storage for sub £500 but I think those days may be gone!

    Me too

Can anyone confirm if this laptop charges using USB C PD, or does it need a proprietary charger?

Very good, I bought my HP 15S-EQ1510SA AMD Ryzen 5 4500U laptop for £400 back in 2020 with a SVA Panel, considering this has an IPS Panel, this is very good for the price.

isnt the biggest problem with this deal that lemovo is poor quality?
    plewis00's avatar
No. They’re generally very good and the Ideapad 5 is quite nice and mid-range, better than most ASUS laptops - it’s not a super budget system like the V series. The issues are probably the soldered RAM and slightly older CPU, but if you don’t think it’ll bother you then it’s fine for the money.

    Why not 16GB

The Ideapad 5 build quality is fine, pretty sure it has a metal lid.

You can pay £50 more and get the Intel 12th Gen version if you prefer.

This deal seems to have expired, do you happen to know of any others? I'm looking for a work laptop with a budget of £450.
